Brief History

Also know as Tipton Airfield and Heavy Bombardment Field No. 2, Cecil Plains Airfield was built during World War II as part of Brisbane's line of defense. It operated along with three nearby airfields with similar duties, Jondaryan (Brymaroo) Airfield, Condamine Airfield, and Leyburn Airfield. The airfield saw operational use with the No. 12 Squadron RAAF and No. 102 Squadron RAAF.

After the war, it was surplus and the Department of Civil Aviation briefly managed it from 1946 and 1948. In 1961, RAAF Amberley considered plans to open a new bombing range at Cecil Plains, aiming to replace its existing one at Evans Head. However, it was not pursued due to oil prospecting and urban growth. Today, it is abandoned and its runways are somewhat well preserved.
