Gawler Aerodrome

Pricipally a glider aerodrome run by a club.

It has fuel and hot water, nothing else.

If you know someone there by all means visit the place otherwise stay away they do not like visitors.

Having said that once they get rid of the current management comittee it will turn into a nice place, if you think I am wrong or biased then by all means go there

Great for both airline (passenger) and general aviation - we

Back in 1999 I was traveling to Australia for business. I managed to spend some time visiting Cairns. I flew up from Sydney on a 747-SP, walked down the jet stairs on to the apron - cool! Then later on in the week I rented a C172, VH-WHK, along with an instructor to fly up the coastline sight seeing. Amazing! I also was amazed to see an HF radio in this C172 - but this made sense, since you are often in the outback. Great times - I hope it is still the same or better.

No AVGAS.

What a dumb idea to run a great big dry Airport.

Picture of Timbo

Gove,

Good fishing, the night life nearly drove me round the bend. Airport a ways out of town, taxi booking can save a long wait.

Well worth a visit

Great Spot. Fuel. No landing fees. It's a good alternative to Port Augusta. The AP Manager is a top bloke.

Picture of

Wattle Hills Airstrip

Good sand strip but private. Cranky mob unless you are really stuck. No drinking water, no fuel (even if caught out) or facilities other a bit of a gunyah to get of the sun. Best to head to Lockhart. Mail service uses strip most Wednesdays. Flying Doctor calls also.

Beware of the powerlines on approach.

Home to the Queensland Air Museum, which is definitely worth a visit.

Broome

Quite a busy airport, with lots of Cessna Caravans coming and going. A great town too.

Rude and arrogant at Aldinga

Beware. Rude, arrogant and only have ears for the sound of the cash register.

Don't spend money, not interested in you.

3 runways in operation with bad radio calls. Spent 3 days in South Australia based at Aldinga. Never again.

It is a place waiting for an accident to happen. Bad flying culture.

Got abused by some rude Brit for something perfectly innocent and normal.

Most expensive Avgas around.

re: field elevation!!!

Thanks for the warning. There are a batch of smaller Australian airports where the elevation in meters was labelled as feet in a free dataset at some point in the past, and that data has made its way to many aviation web sites, including OurAirports. We're fixing the problems as we find them, and I've updated Kyneton now.

Feel free to point out any more problems, or even better, create a free OurAirports account and you'll be able to edit the airport information directly.

Thanks again!

Casterton airfield

This airport is a single unsealed runway and is akin to landing & taking off from an aircraft carrier. eg: ~

field elevation!!!

Hi guys,

Think you need to check the field elevation on the pilot info page, unless the runway is underground,

Cheers,

Mike

skypig on Aldinga Airport

Arrived at Aldinga area, could not relate to traffic in the circuit as there where 3 runways being used at once.

Finally figured it and joined the circuit for 21. Nearly had a midair with a sports star who did no radio calls.

Aborted and went to Goolwa. Subsequent conversations with other pilots advise bad news in the circuit and dangerous.

Operators refuse to take heed and conduct low level circuits with no radio calls and I am reliably informed that situation is deteriorating.

Strong indications that operators do not want visiting aircraft as visiting pilots have been abused for no real reason.

Picture of

great airport

Facilities great. Looked after by the local flying club. Bowser fuel 24/7 at reasonable price and plenty of goodies in the fridge. (pay on an honour system...price list on fridge) Can toast sandwiches, make coffee, soup etc and relax in the lounge. excellent stopover on the way north.

Picture of

facilities

First time on KI. Beaut flight down the coast and across the water. Fantastic runways, even the dirt one but what a big disappointment with the facilities at the terminal. A vending machine and water fountain, and this is supposed to be one of the premier tourist destinations in not only SA but Australia. Whoever is in charge needs to get their act together. Port Pirie which isn't even an RPT airport is streets ahead

Picture of

great hospitality

Decided to make another trip down from Parafield via the coast and Coorong as a birthday present for a longtime friend. Circled the town and on landing was greeted by George who thought it would be nice to come out and say g'day. Not only that he gave us a tour of the town showing all the new development taking place and dropped us off at the cafe/restaurant by the lake. Hospitality there fabulous as was the food and view over the lake. Gotta have their burgers. Wandered back up to the main street and rang George to thank him for all he had done and he insisted dropping us back at the strip...only a 15 minute walk anyway. This has to be one of the best kept secrets close to Adelaide. GREAT DAY OUT!

Thanks again...Colin

Picture of

CTAF Incorrect

CTAF is listed as 125.9 MHz should read 128.0 MHz

Picture of Marsailor

General Info

Non-towered. Radio calls "Myrup Traffic" on 126.7 Mhz. Runways are 04/22 and 14/32. 04 is a right hand circuit, all the others are left hand. Look out for kangaroos on the runways when arriving around dusk.

Picture of tfmorris

Correct IATA code?

Wikipedia seems to think that SXE belongs to the RAAF base at East Sale while the OurAirports DB has SXE associated with both (shouldn't this be a unique key?).

re: wyalkatchem airport

If you have complaints about an airport, could you provide details to help other visitors (and the airport owners, if they want to improve)? For example, did you think the fees were too high, the gas too expensive, the service too slow, facilities not well-maintained?

Aldinga Airport

I flew into Aldinga today, took a friend for a scenic flight along the coast and dropped in for lunch. I have always found the people to be extremely helpful and friendly. After our lunch we went back to the aircraft only to find it wouldnt start. The people at the airfield could not do enough to help us, finding me a new starter motor and a LAME to install. I cant talk more highly of them. :)

Picture of

is it the school?

The school have been dobbed in for flying low circuits, touch and go's and general noise! Have only ever seen l/h circuits. Plus there are no local places to stay/taxi service so while she may have seemed unhelpful she was probably just breaking bad news. Was the fly in organised by adl biplanes or the aeroclub? As they say in thailand same same but different!

Re: Not an airport

The marker has been moved to the proposed location for this airport. The 2004 Operational Feasibility Assessment Report can be accessed here: http://members.pcug.org.au/~mikec/srcg/docs/airfield.pdf

Picture of

Not an airport

This airport marker is centred on Mount Gibralter at Williamsdale which is the first line-up marker for Canberra airport approach.

Old Flyer

My names Peter, I flew regularly with Group Air Flying School from Casey Field Berwick from 1975 until 1993 just before the airfield closed.

I visited Tyabb and other local flying groups socially as was the normal thing throughout my flying time.. I got married, and run off my feet with work and other commitments that flying had to go into the back ground for a while.

I was wondering if there are any other persons who used to be with Group Air are still about and where

Picture of

YADG

Went to a fly in with a friend with a keen interest in joining the flying school, they were very rude and arrogant, We paid for a bbq lunch which was 1 snag each and were promptly sent home! There seemed to be some nice people there, but were too busy gossiping. My friend was quite irate at the way we had been treated and will not return. Looking for Nice, Welcoming Flying School.
