History

The airfield opened in 1918 as Shallufa Aerodrome and provided armament training. It was surplus to military needs and became inactive in 1922 under the Disposal and Liquidation Commission. During the Second World War, it was reactivated for Royal Air Force usage in 1940. Through 1950 until 1954, RAF Shallufa operated as a major training base for the Bomber Command. The base was handed over to the Egyptians in 1955, and the history of Egyptian use isn’t clear.
