I do not like to start a debate, but pls note following: When creating entries for the airfields around El Wak, I added a comment in the entry for the disused city airport that there were possibly two other fields nearby. One of them (a gravel strip) was clearly visible approx. 7.5 kms to the west of the city, for which I created a new entry (KE-0212). I also added a link to the newspaper article which shows people celebrating the opening of what looks like a gravel strip. It is not clear whether this is the same strip of entry KE-0212). Lastly, OpenAIP has an airport HKEW at a location to the S of El Wak city. Although nothing is visible in satellite pictures, this could indeed refer to a stretch of the main road. I therefore have absolutely no problem of HKEW being added to the database with these coordinates, as David has done.
What bothers me somewhat is that this was not done by actually adding a new airport to the database, but by taking the entry for the gravel strip located to the W of the city, and changing its coordinates and designation (KE-0212 is now HKEW). Through this change we may well have a correct HKEW entry, but we have completely lost the gravel strip to the W of El Wak city from the database. I would propose that we do not do this in future and instead preserve other entrie (unless clearly wrong).
this article suggested the new airport is a 2 km long straight stretch on a 10km road, so this location seems to fit the bill and matches the coordinates
The downtown airport is now closed and partly built-over. OpenAIP shows an airport to the S of El Wak city, labelled HKEW (the old city airport's code). No facilities are visible on the satellite images, so it's not clear whether this is in fact correct. However there is a gravel strip about 7.5 kms W of the city, which seems to serve as the new Airport. I have added this to the database.
i am a concerned youth from a village immediately after the airport that is chepyakwai.i usually don't understand what benefits the society gains or enjoy from having the airport within.you understand the states of our roads and the society we live in.looking forward for you step of action to benefit the society.
I was born in early 90's near kampi samaki at a village called meisori which lies at the showers of lake baringo near Kampi samaki Airstrip, the place is so nice has good tourist attraction that includes birdwatchin, boat ride, island camping in the midst of the lake and so much more visit the area and have a look of your own.
The tarmac condition is quite impressive.A serviceable windsock is also available but the strip is narrow.i might as well recommend an initial low pass to ensure no animals or Kids playing on the runway.Good luck as you plan to fly to Nyahururu
I enjoyed the visit to E.I.A where we were highly welcome We as family of Nairobi Aviation College Nakuru Campus, it was on 10th may 2013. Do you think that project will ever materialize. It has been over an year since I started seeing people trying to clear the area. After that, Nothing, at all. I think the money have been diverted. This is the Kenyan way. Just like the road they are repairing from Njoro road to Molo. They are doing such a shoddy job you cannot even imagine. They have put patches and I tell you bythe time they get to Molo That Road will need to be started all over again. And Can our MP, Kiuna tell us how much money has been awarded to the repairing of that road? How much has gone to actual work and how much to the pockets? Why why and why.
Mr Smith earlier this year sold his ~480 Ha farm to a Mombasa businessman, David Lagat. Mr Lagat wants to convert the farm into an upscale residential and recreation center complete with schools, hospitals, banks and shopping malls. It is not known if the old airstrip will be made use of. The last time an aircraft used the strip was in 2011. The facility was used mostly by crop-spraying aircraft but Smith quit farming many years ago. An Indian farming family had since been leasing the land but no crop was planted this year due to the said sale.
NB: A fellow farmer of South African extraction, Petrus 'Fanie' Kruger also sold his ~2000 Ha Sergoit Farm which had a longer and busier airstrip some 15 or so km to the North East of the Smit Farm.
First and foremost this is a good news; with the recent development is it possible to see Kenyans from all over coming to work in Isiolo? A new modern City is on making. I also would like to bring into attention some of Isiolo best coming up with ideas and putting up a website to inform people about Isiolo on their own expense can not be taken for granted and those are the forces to reckon with you can check the website at Isiolo.com
Da airport will certainly open up the nothern fronteer economically , socially, politically e.t.c. The effects of da airport is juz grt. By Ichaba a.k.a masta
I see that works have stated for the construction of Isiolo International Airport. According to information by Daily Nation the runway is reported to be 1.4 Km. instead of 2 km as previously planned. The latter could accept more and biggest airplanes from far destinations, besides the two km runway could be sufficient for war plains in case of emergency due to instability of global politic that is unpredictable. Kshs 610m are not much for such an airport and the Government of Kenya is advised to plan well this first phase; yes, I would like to call it βfirst phaseβ since, observing the other airports history, an extension, as a rule, ought to be considered. Besides I see that local problems have taken over the common interest of all Kenyans, since the airport could located in Kampi Garba area without squishing in the present site that noise pollution can destroy the new βLas Vegasβ as someone likes to call the future Isiolo, and avoiding the noise pollution, already protected by the Constitution. Anyway the airport is very welcome for the progress of all Kenyans not basically for the local peopleβs benefit.
the runway 2 kilometers is not in accordance to international standard; 2 Km only for light aircrafts, not for heavy aircrafts therefore Isiolo cannot be called International Airport. Needed 2.800 meters, minimum. The strong wind direction blowing 6 months a year must be considered since the present airstrip is caught by wind laterally, posing problems to planes for landing and taking off. The wind carries considerable dust damaging engines aircrafts. Intense forestation is need on the left side to stop dust. Tarmac and trees are a necessity to all town roads to prevent dust in the town.
