US military airport

Huge airport for a rather poor region in Paraguay. Big radar station, aparently not in use anymore. Very old equipment inside. Barnstead Puromatic for water purity measurements??? Why do you need that on a lost airport, unless it was planned to be used for something else. 3800meters long and 60meters wide indicates that it can be used for large mililtary planes. Funded by the US in the early 80s for purpose of regional domination, like they do in so many other countries. Currently being guarded by paraguayan military, so it's kinda hard to get on to.

Can't tell...

DAFIF has this airport at -15.550556, -41.017222 and I can't tell from the Google map which is correct.

re: Runway closed?

The airport was closed beginning 2006. Several country clubs will be builded in the 80 hectareas that were occupied by the airport. The first builded in 22 hectareas is named "Lagos del Norte".

AKA...

Seems to also been known as SENL and Lago Agrio airport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lago_Agrio_Airport)

ID?

I don't believe SJXC is an ICAO id - ICAO ids for Brazil start with SB??. In DAFIF, it's SB56.

Picture of ptomblin

ID?

DAFIF and ICAO document lists this as SBFT.

re: ID?

However, it does appear to be listed as SVPF on this Venezuelan site:

http://www.volarenvenezuela.com/vev/modules.php?name=News&file=print&sid=389

Picture of ptomblin

ID?

SVPF isn't listed in http://www.icao.int/anb/aig/Taxonomy/R4CDLocationIndicatorsbystate.pdf

In DAFIF, this was SV03.

Picture of ptomblin

ID?

SVQL isn't listed in the ICAO http://www.icao.int/anb/aig/Taxonomy/R4CDLocationIndicatorsbystate.pdf list of ICAO ids by state. It's SV76 in DAFIF, and some on-line sites agree with that, but they might be getting it from DAFIF.

re: ID mixup?

This one is the rightful owner of the SYWI ICAO code, so I've updated both airports.

Picture of david

re: Wrong ID?

OK, I've merged them both into the more likely one -- thanks.

Picture of david

re: I think the coordinates are wrong

Actually, don't worry -- I merged this into the proper SLMG airport.

Picture of david

re: Wrong place

This is the right airport for the codes, according to the ICAO pub. The lat/lon had somehow been rounded off to full degrees, so I fixed those.

Picture of david

re: I think the coordinates are wrong

Yes, a lot of the S.A. stuff is questionable, even when it was taken from official government sources. What was your source, Paul? If it's at all credible, please feel free to edit the airport.

Picture of ptomblin

Wrong ID?

There are two SVPB "Punta Brava" airports on this site, and I think this one is wrong.

Picture of ptomblin

ID mixup?

Why does this have a URL of SYWI, but an GPS id of SYPR? There is a different airport with an ICAO id of SYWI (GF-0001).

Picture of ptomblin

I think the coordinates are wrong

From another datasource, I got the longitude as -64.0619444444444, and that actually looks like an airport there.

Picture of ptomblin

Wrong place

This is one of several "SLMG" here, and it's definitely in the wrong place.

Picture of david

re: There are two "SKAN" airports.

Merged -- thanks, Paul.

Picture of ptomblin

There are two "SKAN" airports.

You should probably merge them.

Picture of david

re: Another duplicate heliport?

Agreed -- I've merged them.

Picture of ptomblin

Another duplicate heliport?

Another case of a heliport exactly coincident with an airport (SA04).

Picture of ptomblin

Runway closed?

The only apparent runway in the satellite image has "X"s. I wonder if the whole airport is closed?

Picture of david

re: Dup?

Thanks, Paul. I've merged them, and moved the marker to what looks like a (n overgrown?) runway.

Picture of david

re: Is this really a separate facility?

I've merged them, since the heliport doesn't have a separate ICAO or IATA code. I haven't yet made a final decision about what to do when a single facility has multiple codes (e.g. military and civilian, or fixed-wing and heliport). I'll definitely keep seaplane docks separate.

Picture of ptomblin

Is this really a separate facility?

Are the heliport and the airport (SAVJ) really considered separate facilities?

Picture of ptomblin

Dup?

There appears to be two Loncopue airports, about a mile apart. The other one (SA18) is in my DAFIF data. Not sure which one is right.

FRIENDLY PLACE

Nice airport for GA operations: A&P Services, Fuel Avgas and J-1, Hangars for overnight parking. Communications with Rio Preto Radio only in Portuguese. For overnight stay and to avoid high parking fees, park at the secondary ramp.

airport

Leaving town on a rugged dirt road you are surprised by a nice paved road leading you to a vacant 'control tower'. Adjoining the tower is a tie down area, and when I was there you needed to bring ropes to secure your plane. The paved runway is about 5000 feet long and in very good condition. There were a few large rocks on the runway, so if you visit, be sure to walk the runway and clear it. I will visit the airport again early in 2009 and I will bring back a current status report along with photos.

Serious delays and riots

Aerolineas Argentinas has had flight delays of several days out of Ezeiza, leading to riots by stranded passengers over the weekend of 12-13 January 2008:

New Airport

I just landend on this quite new airport (Dec. 16, 2007). Only LAN and the less known Sky Airline operate flights to CPO (official three-letter-code). The airport is small and efficient. No airbridges.

The old airport - known as Copiapo/Chamonte was about 30 miles to the East, closer to Copiapo. If you search for CPO in Google Earth, you can still see the old airport.

Future congestion?

This is the main airport for Sao Paulo. Unfortunately, it may get more congested if authorities decide to shut down its reliever, Congonhas (CGH), after the TAM Airbus crash there on July 17, since GRU will have to pick up the extra domestic flights.

Picture of david

Airport may close

After the fatal TAM Airbus crash on July 17 2007, some Brazilian officials are talking about closing the airport completely for evaluations and maybe resurfacing. Sao Paulo's main international airport is Guarulhos (GRU), but I think that CGH is used a lot for domestic flights, like La Guardia (LGA) in New York.
