I remember it well. My Dad was stationed there in 1940 before his transfer to Greenwood RCAF Base in NS. I grew up and went to the two room school house out side of town.

Location?

I was only 9 years old when we left the area, but I've put a POI about where I think the airport really was. Rumour had it back then that the owner had put everything in his wife's name because he'd been sued over an accident.

Closed for years

My Family still owns the Campbellford Airport, however it has been closed since my grandfather retired from flying in his mid-seventies. This would have been 20 years ago or maybe better. Time goes fast when you're having fun!

Once when I was in the air over CYTZ, the Lancaster from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum flew 500 feet under me: beautiful plane. Someone told me that it's one of only two airworthy Lancs left in the world

I flew in for the first time today. I should have read the comments first, as I came in high an plopped it just like Tony predicted. I'll be back there later this year & will do better on the landing. I've heard that they will be adding a North/South runway this year for the G20 Summit at Deerhurst.

Where's Willie?

This airport also houses an environment canada office / weather station. If you head up to the second floor of the main terminal building (where the cafe is) you can go outside on a patio where there are some weather instruments. There is a sunshine recorder and a tool to measure clouds (I can't remember what it was called). Please obey the signs and don't touch them :) I'm sure if you arrive at the right time, you will see them launch a weather balloon to measure the upper winds!

When we landed we were greeted by someone who offered us a ride into town for a bite to eat. We declined as we just needed to use the facilities and make our way back home. Checked out the pilot's lounge... and took a quick look around the terminal building. Signed the guest register (we we approx the 15th visitor in 2009) and headed home.

Yes, I've never seen a big Canadian style "flying club" in the US like I've seen at Ottawa, Oshawa (now defunct, I'm afraid) and Brampton. Didn't a lot of Canadian flying clubs get started with cheap war surplus training aircraft? I think I read a history of the Oshawa flying club that said they got a few Moths and similar trainers from the Commonwealth Training Plan.

In the U.S., isn't a "flying club" a few people who get together to buy and operate a plane or two? In Canada, it's often a big, non-profit FBO and flight school (sometimes with a pilot shop as well), because that's the way flight training got started in Canada in the 1920s and 30s.

Restaurant?

I'm planning a flight for this weekend to YSB. I will take the notes below in consideration when parking the aircraft.

Just a quick question. Is there a restaurant in the terminal?

WiFi

Sometimes when I'm in Ottawa with nothing better to do, I go to the Ottawa Flying Club to leach their wifi, eat something from the snackbar and watch the planes go by. I wish my flying club had a club house.

This is my home airport. I fly with Future Air. Excellent service, well maintained.

Cool Airport

This airport was super easy to find, since it's right next to highway 400. At night, the airport beacon is not on until you activate the ARCAL. So keep that in mind when trying to find the airport after dark.

Two windsocks at both ends of the runway make finding the active easy!

The flight there during the fall was beautiful especially with the fall colours contrasting against the blue lakes.

Look out for the hump!

Landed on 36, then taxied to the holding bay at 18 due to landing traffic behind us. No taxiways, back track required. Nice new terminal building, coffee was on and everyone was friendly. There is a very interesting poster on the bulletin board from the RCMP asking pilots to keep a look out for marijuana plants!

Nice Airport

Has a parallel taxiway going halfway down the runway. Neat airplanes parked and a really nice little terminal.

Ultralight friendly and safe

I often fly a paratrike (PPG/PPC) out of the infield there, both mornings and evenings. A very safe and ultralight friendly airport, with relatively little traffic. An air-band radio is a requirement, but a lot of flexibility otherwise. Great scenery to enjoy within a short distance in all directions.

Nice little strip, was there yesterday for precautionary trng. Ended up doing a soft field landing. Really neat place!

Not a full FBO

Aviation International is a flight school that runs the Guelph airport and happens to sell tie-down spots and 100LL fuel to transients, but it is definitely not a full FBO. According to the woman on the phone, tie-downs on the grass are $7/night, and you have to move your plane to and from the fuel pumps yourself (though they do the actual fueling). They have no arrangements with rental-car companies, not even a key drop-off.

For full FBO service (e.g. leave a fuel order and walk into your waiting rental car), you can fly into Waterloo (YKF) 10 nm/18km away, but you'll pay a bit more money.

Great Aerodrome!

A blast from the past, posters inside depicting their vibrant past as an airforce base. You can almost hear the Harvards buzzing in the background, nice layout good fuel prices, great service. I haven't eaten at the cafe yet but I imagine I will soon!

Conk: the $100 hamburger is an old aviation joke: $5 for the hamburger, and $95 for the gas to fly to the airport and back. Nowadays, it's more like a $300 hamburger.

Great Airport!

Staff are very friendly. Lots of planes to look at! 100LL really well priced, same price as Lake Simcoe usually but with the tax allready factored in so you end up saving quite a bit of money! Beautiful location, you cant beat a nice flight over wasaga beach!

Not Very GA Friendly.

The staff there are great but the airport in general seems to be more concerned with the corporate jet scene. Avgas is expensive ~1.55L + GST. I usually go to collingwood because it is usually much cheaper! Good runway to practice on, there are two flight schools there Future Air and Canadian Flyers International.

Communications

Communications in this area can be a little tricky. Orillia is on 122.8, Lake Simcoe is on 122.7. There is always some traffic over the narrows and everyone is n their own frequency. Keep a vigilant eye out for other traffic!

No idea what activity is going on there - last visit it was pretty desolate.

Great Airport

2100' Long.

Watch for pot hole on West side of taxiway/runway intersection aswell as at the end of 25. Hump in the middle.

No fuel available for purchase. 5 Minute car ride from Mall, Restaurants, etc.

Friendly environment. Good Location, beautiful scenery.

Now the Ontario Police College

This air base closed after World War II, and the grounds eventually became the Ontario Police College. The old BCATP triangular runway pattern is still clearly visible.

Spotted behind Maxville fair grounds

I was at the highland games in Maxville a few years ago, when I suddenly saw a Mooney take off from behind the trees on the north side of the fair grounds. When I peeked, I found a private, unlisted grass strip with a few airplanes. I don't know if the field is still operational.

Thanks for checking, Blake -- I'm glad that my fears were unfounded. Maybe the PPR is just an insurance thing, in case someone lands without checking runway conditions and tears off a strut.

I got more information, from Bob Kisin, a member of the Buttonville Flying club:

"I was there yesterday & spoke to a club member. Loch Sloy is a British Company that owns the property. This has long been the case, apparently and the PEFC rents their clubhouse & a hangar from the owners.

The PPR isn't enforced as far as I know (at least on fly-in days). However, because the runways are not maintained in winter, a call regarding current conditions is suggested. Many PEFC planes "live" at other airports in the region."

I noticed that the owner of the airport has changed. From a NOTAM:

So looks like the airport is now owned by a private company, and not the Prince Edward Flying Club.

I thought it would be a lot busier than it was. There was one other aircraft behind me that was landing there. Not sure what he was going to do there.

The school might still be up and running, but closed for the summer holidays? This was a t&g so I didn't get a real good glimpse of the place, but I didn't see any other vehicles or aircraft on the field.

It had an "abandoned" feel to it.

A little run down.

Did a touch and go here. Not much to see but a few boarded up windows. Nobody was manning unicom on a Sunday morning.

Downwind for 27 was pretty being along the lake shore.

The airport is just east of Trentons Control Zone, so don't forget to call them up if you are westbound!

You will find this airport in the CFS under Tyendinaga (Mohawk) airport

Where's the wind sock?

I arrived after dark, someone was doing circuits on 18, but the weather I got from Wiarton was favoring 36, however it was only at 2knots.

By the time I got there, they were done with their circuit work so I was all alone. I overflew the field, 500' above circuit altitude and trying to find the windsock. From my interpretation of the CFS, it should be closer to the threshold of 36. Alas, I couldn't find it.

I proceeded to land on 18, and on my roll out, found the windsock. It was closer to the middle of the runway, than what the CFS depicted. hmm.. Maybe I should submit a correction?

The runway has a pretty significant slope to it, especially landing on 18.

It was easy to find at night, the beacon was one of the brighter ones I've seen.

First Visit

This is a great little airport, with two grass strips.

This was easy to spot coming from the east, especially in dusk. Did a full stop, but didn't check out the terminal.

For some reason I found reading the windsock extremely easy from circuit altitude.

Easy to find.

I managed to find Cornwall easily enough on my first dual cross country this weekend. Am planning to go back solo this Saturday. Was a great airport with friendly staff.
