Dunnville Airport

Well its official. The airport is to stop flight ops as of the end of May this year. Once again a pice of history lost. I have been there many times. I remember standing in hanger 4 that was empty and the roof leaking old equipment rusting in the back. And hearing the harvard fly over thinking this is a shame. Once those towers go up its gone forever. The Museum hopes to run still but i can't see it drawing a crowd with out aircraft too tie it all together. Anyone that has been there should show up for the open house in May it will be the last time we hear the roar of a harvard Departing Dunnville. PLease show you support and and give the field one last Buzz.

re: No Brakes

Good to hear about Ram Falls! Wondering if you, or anyone, has ever flown into the Shunda Airstrip (east of Nordegg) or the Brazeau Airstrip. straight north of there? I see they are abandoned but are they landable? Thx

Picture of

Top speed run

I'd like to take my bike to a safe location to max out the speed, I figured a paved landing strip would be perfect. Any idea where I could go do this???

re: Prom Banaster

Dude your trying way!!! to hard. Just ask her yourself, save that for asking a girl to marry you.

Picture of

No Brakes

Strip appeared to be clear of snow and grass covered on March 31st 2013. The surface was water on frozen turf. It was a long roll out in My Scout with Alaska Bush wheels. Shouldn't have been a surprise but it was. No problems out and agreat day. I was into the Ram Falls strip prior and it was dry.

Picture of

Prom Banaster

I was wondering if there was any way someone could fly a banaster that would be asking a girl to prom? Please e mail me at guelph121@hotmail.com

Mica Creek Airport is located approximately 20 km south of the Mica Creek Townsite. There are small willows and trees starting to grow on the fringe of the stripe. The approximate length of the stripe is 3000'.

Needs an bigger Airport ( Airstrip) on Fogo Island.

Make it bigger and have a regular flights everyday so people can choose how they want to travel. That would be awesome service...........Lots of tourist would love that. The people on Fogo Island would love that to.

Wind Turbines

The Niagara Skydive Centre Inc. receive an "Notice Of Termination" for the lease on the hanger effective March 31, 2013. My understanding is the Main runway will be closed June or July for good. There are 6 wind turbines slated for the property.

Hastings Field

Only one way in and the opposite way out. Long grass strip running uphill - lots of distance although I don't know the length. The owner keeps it cut (friendly too). There is a for sale sign so it could be your next life.

who owns the airport?

Just looking since Waterville might be numbered. Who owns this Airpark? How busy is it?

Airport Overall

Recently introduced runway is under "restricted" use. Airport manager tries to get everyone to use an unpublished and unsafe circuit procedure when using a certain runway for unforeseen noise complaints (27 I think). Self serve fuel does no take debit, only Credit Cards. The flight school installed a new simulator which takes up all the leisure space inside the FBO. The restaurant closed recently and no one really comes in to hang out on the weekends anymore. Hangar prices went up recently and are costly. Airport is slowly improving with the construction however it feels like they have recently been removing the community aspect of flying in Burlington which is a shame for what the airport was many years ago.

Lee waves!

Been there yesterday, and man, wasn't that an example of mechanical turbulence... Brutal! My poor 172 was tossed around like a paper plane, yoke hitting the stops and ASI jumping from 60 to 100 in a blink of an eye. Twice got sucked down in a wind shear while on short final, adding full power to arrest the descent... Overall - three awesomely challenging circuits, totally worth visiting the place. And no one around that wonderful day (wondering why?)

Initially I thought that horrible turbulence was a result of the crosswind blasting over the airport buildings, but no - it was as "bumpy" all around, low and high, thanks to a bunch of irregularly-shaped hills just west of the airport, with a lee wave stuck aside of a mountain ridge nearby.

Besides that, a very nice aerodrome - easy to find, with clean approaches and lots of space around in case your engine decides to quit. Runway is in the good shape, and airport name is written on a main taxiway - very welcoming and friendly.

Poor food choices

Having a five hour wait for my connecting flight, I was disappointed with the lack of good sit down places to eat. The airport is okay but a bit dingy compared to Vancouver. Great city but dismal airport.

Good

First grass landing

This was the airport I did my first landing on grass at. However it was on a PPL flight test!

Picture of

Good airport

The Waterloo flight school uses this as a standard cross country route. Not very busy and very fun approach for 14 over Lake Huron! Windsheer can get nasty at times.

re: Wind Turbines

Samsung is currently storing windmills on the shorter runway and it is closed by NOTAM. There is security on the property that will confront you. As far as I know the skydiving company is fighting the windmills and I heard plans recently of a flight school for Indian students looking at CDU9.

re: How much is Landing Fee CYQB?

Since January 2013, there is now a $20 landing fee for light GA. Just got the bill. What a jip.

Nice place to discover

Vulcan is a bit of challenge to discover, sitting "in the middle of nowhere", close to a little town next to a railroad. When approaching from the West, main runway looks as long as the town itself!

There is no doubt when you find Vulcan, as its name is written in huge white letters on the ramp. I haven't stop there yet, just touch and go's - but the place looks clean, nice, and well maintained. Reasonably wide, long, asphalt runway in a very good condition, easy approaches.

NDB sitting next to the runway is... well... not really useful. I mean, when you finally get a steady signal, it means that you are just a couple of miles from the field. Should be interesting to shoot some training approaches, though.

Sleepy Airport

I have been to High River twice, always in winter, and found it hibernated. Looks like there is a community somewhere, but I wasn't able to catch up with them.

Runway is huge, long, clean and well maintained. Note the long displaced thresholds, though. And caution with crosswinds, these can be quite intense as the prairie around is flat for miles and miles around!

Easy to find, with clean approaches and light traffic - though somehow there was always someone on the frequency (or in the circuit) when I was flying there.

Picture of dazuppa

Friendly ATC

I've only been to CYHM for touch and go's, but flew through their airspace and near it quite frequently while going to Niagara area and back - day and night, winter and summer.

Airport itself is large, way too much than average GA pilot may ever need - and located in a strategically excellent spot. Easy to find, and though there is a lot (as in - a lot!) of through and local traffic, never a problem to deal with thanks to an excellent, very professional ATC. Thanks guys, you set the standards in my books! Few controlled airspaces I've been to are as friendly and comfortable to deal with.

re: Co-op

Sorry we missed your post, there is no licensed aviation mechanic at the club but there are a lot of knowledgeable people that can answer your questions and show you around.

The nearest airports with certified mechanics with a service shop are Hamilton International, Burlington Airpark and York Airfield

Hope this helps

CYLS

I wrote to the FAA about the fact that they still have this listed as CNB9, and they wrote me back asking exactly when it changed. The person asking said "I need this information to track down in what AIRAC Canada publication it was modified for FAA's history file and as an authorized source to update of FAA (NASR) data base." Anybody here know when it changed?

BC Airlines float base on Powell Lake 1957-58

Maurie Mercer was BC Airlines base pilot on Powell Lake in 1958 when I was working for Bill Gaston at the little Shell station there. Mauie gave me my first airplane ride. It was a Cessna 170.. I would love to know the call letters of that airplane and locate a picture of it too if anyone has one. I can be reached at jpveale@shaw.ca Thanks

Would you believe...

The FAA still has this listed as CNB9 instead of CYLS. I've sent them an update.
