Flying with ELUAS

Flew from RAF Brawdy with the East Lowlands University Air Squadron in 1976, flying RAF Bulldogs. Incredible fun. First experience of the "Goldfish Bowl Effect" when the blue of the sea and the blue of the sky merged. Didn't realise anything was wrong, (and that I was disorientated), until the controls went all sloppy on me. Recovered facing toward land. Learnt a lot that day.

Don't take a taxi!!!

Long wait in line to get a chit, then very expensive for the short drive into town.

Definition of "liquid"

Be aware of what is now considered 'liquid' and therefore subject to separate screening procedures and personal allowance when passing through security. This used to be my home airport, so I've flown to and from MAN on many occasions. This time however, clearing security at T1, a recorded message repeated saying that inhalers and deodorant are liquids. What I didn't realise is that even solid stick deodorant and powder inhalers are, apparently, "liquids". I challenged the staff on inspection and they told me there are three main English dictionaries: Oxford, Collins, and Manchester Airport. So even though literally nothing is actually liquid, they have this definition.

Saint Athan

Saint Athan is a great airfield to land at £12 per tone very good with GA aircraft and you handled by Horizon flight training and you get to look around there hangar

In relation to noise comments

As you maybe aware RAF pilots hate your noise too, the noise of your lips spewing drivel and the intensely deafening sound off your fingers on your keyboard. May you do us all a favor and back track to your house and fold your wings, RAF guys and girls on the other hand keep up the good work!! Tallyho!

From the Otter pilot

Pilot notes: Find airport info on http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com airport information

For Tidal info, consult the tables for "Barra North Bay". Generally speaking when the tide is below 3.0 meter the runways are usable. The first to be flooded is runway 29, then 33, lastly 25.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/coast_and_sea/tide_tables/7/314

There are normally two scheduled flights a day with a turn-around time of 20-30 minutes. The twin otters will receive priority so plan a landing and departure at other times. Schedules are at irregular, but published times.

It is advisable to phone Barra airport authority before departure.

The CAA have just published their second annual survey of the quality of assistance for passengers with a disability or reduced mobility. It covers the 30 busiest U.K. airports.

The only airports to be rated Very Good in both surveys were Humberside and Norwich.

Noise at Old Park Farm airfield.

The noise of the aerobatics is not from old Park its the RAF trainers who fly from St Athen to overhead Margam park to practice. We the pilots at Old Park would be very happy if they would stop as it annoys us too. Try contacting the officer commanding at St Athan and asking them to stop! We have and were told because its open airspace they can do what they want. And that is true. However if you do have an issue with the flying at Old Park call Rob on 07989537508. Then we can address the problem. The last thing we want is unhappy neighbours!

brian norton

Hi Brian, Can't put a face to your name. I first went to Upavon on 9th July 1961 and was active in the club until mid November, as I was stationed at waterbeach and started flying at Duxford then.

Hope you are well and still flying. Chris (micro)

re: Moonrakers Soaring Club, RAFGSA

Reply to @ChrisM: We must have met. I went solo during that year. I was introduced by fellow Hull guys Colin Wray and David Ellis. We were on Fitters (Wireless and Radar) courses at Yatesbury. I hope you see this blog, as I see your entry is back in 2011! I remember one day, flying was suspended when some Groupie came with his autogiro and gave a demo. I understand it was used by him in Bond films. Brian Norton.

Great Airport Beats Manchester and London Airports

This is a great airport to fly from, good people good facilities and good choice of scheduled and charter flights. Airport not to blame for luggage delays they do not provide luggage staff the airlines do.

Picture of

viewing aircraft!

Hi there, I would like to know where you can watch planes safely without breaking the law or interfering with the airport security and police?

I have found 1 or 2 places. 1 is on the footbridge 117 over the railway line just to the north of the airport between Horley and Gatwick. 2 is also on a bridge 120 by the perimeter road (A23). On the footpath between Charlwood and Ifield Hall by the approach lights. Lastly another up on the hill by Russ Hill Hotel near Ifield Windmill. I hope this helps people!?

Picture of

Noise

You have a very annoying airobatic type plane taking off from your airstrip .Im sure there must be regulations for noise . All the other aircraft I have heard and seen have been fine. They take off and clear off. Im sure you will know what aircraft and how to baffle the noise.

Propeller Inn is Fab

Flew into Bembridge yesterday with the Miss's. Had an absolutely 1st class meal at the Propeller - it's a must do. Sea Bass and Duck - just delicious. And only £15 to land. Beats the alternatives.

Landing on 04

If your in a low wing and trying to land on 04, then you need to hit the threshold, or you sink rate = the slop of the runway!!!

Try not to stamp on the breaks too!
