Thunderbay ESSO Service
I have stopped there three times. Great, quick, and friendly service at reasonable prices.
Great Facility, very reasonable fuel prices and great servic
Runway 36-18 bumpier in spring as frost leaves ground, but last writer below completely exagerates condition. Both my planes based here, and in addition to light aircraft, Dash, Metro, Hawker and RJ traffic regularly use runway with no difficulty. Staff always prepared to provide for transportation needs, whether calling for or furnishing rides. Exceptional mechanical and paint shop too, providing services to commercial and private operators. Very reasonable fuel prices and no parking fees. Head and shoulders above Sault airport (CYAM) in every respect. Same distance to town as CYAM, so for visiting traffic, CPF2 is much better with cheaper fuel, no landing fees, no parking fees and abundantly helpful and capable service attendants on site. Water aerodrome as well at this facility, both on Lake George and taxi up Bar River to base, or on water runway parallel to 36-18.
History
A former British Commonwealth Air Training Plan station, home of No. 31 Air Navigation School, equipped with Anson. Opened on 18 November 1940 and closed 17 February 1945.
re: Cost of landing
In Canada and the U.S., most small airports don't have landing fees, though it's still a good idea to call and check.
Cost of landing
Hello to all flyers,
I sort of got fascinated by the idea of private flying when I saw those Cessnas next to Herb's and a friend showed me the mechanic; and I wanted to find out about the history of that airport; would you know the year it was opened?
And a question for CL 1960: how much does it cost to land in the grass in an informal airport such as this one?
Thank you for your time!
Stolen name
Toronto has to take everything. Billy Bishop, arguably the British Empires no 1 flying ace of WWI was from OWEN SOUND. Thats why the airport in OWEN SOUND is called Billy Bishop and was called that first. So good job Toronto, you couldnt think up something original and had to steal OWEN SOUND's airport name.
Excellent destination
Huge runway, easy to find, useful unicom and friendly folks in the FBO - great place to go, a useful alternative to Muskoka. Unfortunately, uncontrolled - but otherwise absolutely recommended to visit. Watch out for the floatplanes approaching - they actually complete a normal circuit for the runway 17, only to skim the concrete surface and land in a pond at the end of it! Looks unusual...
official cablehead website is finally up and running!
Come visit online: www dot cablehead dot weebly dot com
Runway one way only
A high tension powerline runs accross the runway 18 threshold. Landings are to the north only, takeoffs to the south only.
Closed permanently
The Cargair base at Lac Kaigamac is closed, fuel is available a few miles north at the Marina "Nautique" in St-Michel-des-Saints on Lac Taureau
Nice Friendly Airport !!
Landed there a couple of weeks back ona VFR from Picton to St. Thomas. Fuel staff were really friendly. Kinda like landing on an aircraft carrier when you approach on 26 and the traffic on the road about 40 feet below can be distracting but a nice challenge to your concentration.
Landing Fee note
"Private aircraft will not be charged a landing fee however, a landing fee will be applied to all military, government and commercial aircraft." http://www.porthawkesburyairport.com/products.htm
Upslope Flyers' Paradise!
You know those MS Flight Simulator airports which, due to a program error, are sitting in the bottom of a pit with vertical walls around - so you need to fly in circles to climb out or land? Volk airport looks exactly like that in reality, especially when you stand at the bottom of the pit, where both runways are crossing each other. More, the longest runway is not only upsloped both ways - it is also curved, framed with tall trees, and has a rather uneven surface!
Well the hills and slopes surrounding Volk airport are not vertical, but they still look impressive. If you are flying a Super Cub or CH 701 - visiting Volk airport will be pure fun. But if you are plowing the sky in something like a 65 hp J-3, with its engine a bit too beaten to give you the full power, and the air is hot... Uhm... I would say be very, very careful - you may not make it out.
I think that Volk airport is one of the most exciting and challenging grass strips around Toronto, and Lisa from Golden Eagle flight school (goldeneagleflightschool.com) is a very friendly and welcoming person, nice to chat with. Just get a right plane to go there, and enjoy the adventure.
Stay away $500.00 fee
This was a private airplane that was charged the $500.00 fee. It said nothing about it on their website. They said no one ever complained about it before. I replied the landing fee at JFK in New York was a deal at $150.00 compared to Port Hawksbury. I will be contacting AOPA and CAPA about the fee.
re: No go place
Reply to @dazuppa: Even though funds aren't available to resurface the runway at this time, it really isn't in such a deteriated condition as you noted. It's never been closed so no need to 'X' the ends. It's used regularly by everything from ultralights to medium size twins. I was at the strip recently and there was a Cessna 310 and Piper Navaho along with a Cessna 182 RG on the ramp, an indication the strip is fully servicable and never an issue for your undercarriage, retractible or otherwise.
There was always a flight school at the airport until ownership changed. The school was operated by an Air Canada pilot and offered full training through multi engine and commercial.
The airstrip is just 40' wide, usually with a crosswind. In addition, on a windy day there may be some turbulence over the berm along the north side of the strip. The housing development on approach to runway 25 is never a problem. The airstrip is quite safe for landing but may be a little daunting for anyone having to deal with crosswinds and unfamiliar with landing on a short, narrow runway. The technique is somewhat different than landng at an airport with almost unlimited length. Fly the numbers, land on the numbers, stay near the centerline and your airplane will be just as happy as landing at the large regional airport.
I don't recommend an inexperienced student from a large airport use this for airstrip for his solo cross country, however 'experienced pilots' never have problems landing at Springwater.
More on fees
This page does say that the airport has landing fees for commercial and military aircraft, but it doesn't specify the amounts: http://www.porthawkesburyairport.com/news.htm
re: Landing fee at Port Hawkesbury Airport Canada
I'm sorry to hear about the fee. Certainly, there was none for my little Piper a few years ago when I visited. I hope someone from the airport can comment on this incident.
Landing fee at Port Hawkesbury Airport Canada
Stay away. After contacting CannPass and recieving port or entry approval to land at Port Hawksbury, We were on short final gear down. The airport personal asked what type of aircraft we were. They then informed us that there will be a $500.00 landing fee. Remember their website says there is no landing fee. They were glad to charge this fee and said no other pilots complained about this fee. Looks like our US dollars will never go back.
Private airport
No landing fee, Overnight parking fee ($15.00), have both full (100LL and Jet)

John Howroyd,
Awesome new colors on CFHUM... Black Red & Green stripes. Wishing you many more years of great high-flying fun. You've always been my most interesting and adventurous teacher. We could go flying again sometime!

That Brampton feeling
Huge runways in good condition, lots of GA planes, some impressive vintage aircraft (I've seen a T-28 and Cornell), completely messed up circuit with planes cutting on the final, joining it from any altitude and direction, doing steep turns on the downwind... reminds anything? I felt like it was another Brampton. Decent airport, but not so fun to fly around. If needed to land somewhere around Niagara, I'd think St. Catharines, not Welland.
Nice airport
Quiet small airport. Well maintained runway, good approaches, nice folks at the FBO. Finding it is a tiny bit of a challenge, though following the railroad while checking a Pearson VOR radial helps. Loved the autumn scenery around Grimsby - so quiet, so sweet.
Porter Airport Parking / Toronto Island Airport Parking / Bi
This is for those that have complained about the expensive parking rates at the airport above aka Toronto City Center Airport or YTZ.
I recently had to catch a flight out of Porter and parked at 19 Bathurst St, just behind the Amsterdam Brewery, which happen to only be a short 5 minute walk to the terminal. And at only $20/day, it was a no brainer. Especially when you consider that Porter airport charges a whopping $38/day!
Cheers
Piero

Light Tower
Watch out for the tower to the North West. Comes into play for Left Hand circuits for Runway 07.
Runway Conditions?
Anyone know about the latest runway conditions for Shundra, Nordegg River, or Brazeau Abandoned airstrips?
Thanks

Airport
July 26th, 2011: Very friendly and helpful people. No tie down. Car gaz available between 13h and 14h30. General store. No motel. No restaurant.
Wow what changes!!
This Airport has gone under major changes in the last three years since the new owners took over. Its very well groomed and has a paved strip plus a grass strip.Lets not forget the water for the floatplanes.Always something to see and they also added Fly Boys outdoor grill the food is exceptional. They also put in new washroom facilities with showers for anyone wishing to camp onsite. Its close to Casino Rama. The new owners are continually improving and are very gracious hosts and would welcome all visitors.
Lovely Airstrip
Nice grass airstrip West of Toronto - relatively easy to find, clean approaches, well maintained. Look out for the unmarked power line parallel to the road when approaching from the East. A bunch of ultralights and homebuilts hidden in the hangars, and walls of soft, high corn surrounding the landing strip - in case you'd feel like rolling out. ;-)
Night Flying to CYMX
Well worth the night flight just for the Runway Lights! - Very Friendly Airport.
Great airport for private aircraft
With the town of Tofino just 15 minutes away, a new terminal just completed and upgrades to the airport in the works this is a great destination to fly into to experience the wild west coast of Vancouver Island. Accomodations range from the renowned Wickaninnish Inn and its ocean view restaurant, "The Pointe" to excellent hostels, budget motels and Vacation Rentals there is something for everyone. Budget Rental car is available at the airport too so transportation is immediately available year round.

re: Downsview Park shuts down Toronto`s Canadian Air & Space
Reply to @prattsoplenty: I'm very sad about this. I went to the museum last year, and was amazed to find it was in the same building where I'd been in the Air Cadets in the mid 1970s (188 Squadron). It's a great little museum - obviously underfunded, but a real labour of love.
Downsview Park shuts down Toronto`s Canadian Air & Space Mus
Toronto -- September 24, 2011 -- Toronto's Canadian Air & Space Museum has received notice from its landlord Parc Downsview Park that the Park will be locking the doors today and closing the Museum to regular business.
The Park, a branch of the federal government, has control over the Museum's access after changing the locks following Tuesday's original eviction notice. This threatens to bring a sudden and disappointing close to the Canadian Air & Space Museum's 13-year operation of providing the public an opportunity to experience Canadian history.

The Best Poutine!
This was a flight just for the Poutine! WOW - 12bucks and you may have to dump fuel to get home - Huge and Tasty.
Worth the flight, worth the money - Airport is English Friendly too
Was Land-o-lakes
This used to be a great little strip called Land-o-lakes or something like that and was very friendly.
I understand that has all changed which is really too bad since there are very few other options in the area.

re: Still a nice place
The airport was struck by lightning during the big storm a few weeks ago, it took out the runway lights, arcal controller , fuel dispenser circuit board and popped a few circuit breakers.
the repair costs have exceeded $4,000 but all systems are functioning very well now.
The fuel cost is usually lower than surrounding airports and CNP8 is the only one around with Mogas
The airport is a no winter maintenance facility, but it is cleared when the snow is not too heavy
re: Second runway planned
Reply to @FortMc: thanks for the link. It looks interesting, though I think the architect who made the 3D model might have been over-optimistic about how many airliners would be on the ramp at once. :)
