re: Wow!

I fully agree...it's too shame we lost its owner!

Not a full FBO

Aviation International is a flight school that runs the Guelph airport and happens to sell tie-down spots and 100LL fuel to transients, but it is definitely not a full FBO. According to the woman on the phone, tie-downs on the grass are $7/night, and you have to move your plane to and from the fuel pumps yourself (though they do the actual fueling). They have no arrangements with rental-car companies, not even a key drop-off.

For full FBO service (e.g. leave a fuel order and walk into your waiting rental car), you can fly into Waterloo (YKF) 10 nm/18km away, but you'll pay a bit more money.

Great Aerodrome!

A blast from the past, posters inside depicting their vibrant past as an airforce base. You can almost hear the Harvards buzzing in the background, nice layout good fuel prices, great service. I haven't eaten at the cafe yet but I imagine I will soon!

re: $100 Hamburger or Breakfast

Conk: the $100 hamburger is an old aviation joke: $5 for the hamburger, and $95 for the gas to fly to the airport and back. Nowadays, it's more like a $300 hamburger.

Picture of Conk

$100 Hamburger or Breakfast

A $100 hamburger or breakfast???? Geeze-louise! This I gotta see! Will be coming up from Asheville, NC, USA in late August for the air show. I'll be sure and bring extra cash!

Picture of Niss

Great Airport!

Staff are very friendly. Lots of planes to look at! 100LL really well priced, same price as Lake Simcoe usually but with the tax allready factored in so you end up saving quite a bit of money! Beautiful location, you cant beat a nice flight over wasaga beach!

Picture of Niss

Not Very GA Friendly.

The staff there are great but the airport in general seems to be more concerned with the corporate jet scene. Avgas is expensive ~1.55L + GST. I usually go to collingwood because it is usually much cheaper! Good runway to practice on, there are two flight schools there Future Air and Canadian Flyers International.

Picture of Niss

Communications

Communications in this area can be a little tricky. Orillia is on 122.8, Lake Simcoe is on 122.7. There is always some traffic over the narrows and everyone is n their own frequency. Keep a vigilant eye out for other traffic!

Emsdale Airport

No idea what activity is going on there - last visit it was pretty desolate.

Picture of Niss

I almsot forgot.....

Left Hand circuits for 07 and right hand circuits for 25. UNICOM is 123.00.

Picture of Niss

Great Airport

2100' Long.

Watch for pot hole on West side of taxiway/runway intersection aswell as at the end of 25. Hump in the middle.

No fuel available for purchase. 5 Minute car ride from Mall, Restaurants, etc.

Friendly environment. Good Location, beautiful scenery.

Hope to see you there!

Now the Ontario Police College

This air base closed after World War II, and the grounds eventually became the Ontario Police College. The old BCATP triangular runway pattern is still clearly visible.

Spotted behind Maxville fair grounds

I was at the highland games in Maxville a few years ago, when I suddenly saw a Mooney take off from behind the trees on the north side of the fair grounds. When I peeked, I found a private, unlisted grass strip with a few airplanes. I don't know if the field is still operational.

re: Airport now PPR.

Thanks for checking, Blake -- I'm glad that my fears were unfounded. Maybe the PPR is just an insurance thing, in case someone lands without checking runway conditions and tears off a strut.

Picture of bcrosby

re: Airport now PPR.

I got more information, from Bob Kisin, a member of the Buttonville Flying club:

"I was there yesterday & spoke to a club member. Loch Sloy is a British Company that owns the property. This has long been the case, apparently and the PEFC rents their clubhouse & a hangar from the owners.

The PPR isn't enforced as far as I know (at least on fly-in days). However, because the runways are not maintained in winter, a call regarding current conditions is suggested. Many PEFC planes "live" at other airports in the region."

Picture of david

re: Airport now PPR.

Blake: that might be bad news about the change in ownership. I wonder if they're planning to close the airport and build a development.

Picture of bcrosby

Airport now PPR.

I noticed that the owner of the airport has changed. From a NOTAM:

080099 CYGK PICTON

CNT7 AMEND PUB: OPR TO READ: LOCH SLOY HOLDINGS LTD

613-399-9076, 613-393-3152 OR 613-476-3064 REG PPR

So looks like the airport is now owned by a private company, and not the Prince Edward Flying Club.

re: A little run down.

Dave,

I thought it would be a lot busier than it was. There was one other aircraft behind me that was landing there. Not sure what he was going to do there.

The school might still be up and running, but closed for the summer holidays? This was a t&g so I didn't get a real good glimpse of the place, but I didn't see any other vehicles or aircraft on the field.

It had an "abandoned" feel to it.

Picture of david

re: A little run down.

Thanks for the info, Blake. Until recently, at least, there was an active flying school here:

Picture of bcrosby

A little run down.

Did a touch and go here. Not much to see but a few boarded up windows. Nobody was manning unicom on a Sunday morning.

Downwind for 27 was pretty being along the lake shore.

The airport is just east of Trentons Control Zone, so don't forget to call them up if you are westbound!

You will find this airport in the CFS under Tyendinaga (Mohawk) airport

Good breakfast

A good place for a $100 hamburger or breakfast.

Open 7days a week 8am - 2pm.

Where's the wind sock?

I arrived after dark, someone was doing circuits on 18, but the weather I got from Wiarton was favoring 36, however it was only at 2knots.

By the time I got there, they were done with their circuit work so I was all alone. I overflew the field, 500' above circuit altitude and trying to find the windsock. From my interpretation of the CFS, it should be closer to the threshold of 36. Alas, I couldn't find it.

I proceeded to land on 18, and on my roll out, found the windsock. It was closer to the middle of the runway, than what the CFS depicted. hmm.. Maybe I should submit a correction?

The runway has a pretty significant slope to it, especially landing on 18.

It was easy to find at night, the beacon was one of the brighter ones I've seen.

Picture of bcrosby

First Visit

This is a great little airport, with two grass strips.

This was easy to spot coming from the east, especially in dusk. Did a full stop, but didn't check out the terminal.

For some reason I found reading the windsock extremely easy from circuit altitude.

Picture of viennatech

Easy to find.

I managed to find Cornwall easily enough on my first dual cross country this weekend. Am planning to go back solo this Saturday. Was a great airport with friendly staff.

Picture of bcrosby

Some Information...

Surprisingly, King City was a small but busy airport considering it's

proximity to Maple Airport (Now Wonderland). Beamish Construction bought

the land in the 1980's and set up shop. If you drive past the area, you can

also make out the control tower located at the south end of the field.

Red Bull air race 2008

From 31 May to 1 June, the Red Bull Air Race is coming to Windsor and Detroit. It will take place along the Detroit River between the two cities, and there will be viewing stands on both the Canadian and U.S. sides of the river.

Petition to save Lindsay Airport

Local government is considering whether to keep Lindsay Airport open or sell off the land to developers. Here's the online petition to keep the airport open:

http://lindsay.epetitions.net/

As you can see from the other comments, this is a popular airport with transient pilots.

Picture of bcrosby

Easy to find

This airport was extremely easy to find. Just follow the shoreline until you see Jordan Bay. Then bam, it's at your 12 o'clock (if you're coming from the west).

Nice long strip..

Didn't stay, just did a touch and go.

Picture of david

Gas station across street

There's a gas station across the street that you can use to refill the tank when you're returning a rental car.

AIRPORT

I THINK ITS RUN WELL AND SERVES THE PUBLIC WELL.

Picture of jtey

Great airport

Nice, friendly people. Big runway.

Contact info

The phone number for the Esso at Timmins is 705-268-7212 ext. 3157.

Picture of david

Fuel and parking

I called on 18 February 2008, and the Esso was selling 100LL for CAD 1.52/litre + GST. Plug-in posts are available at the visitor parking along the fence.

Picture of david

Customs

This is a good place to clear Canada Customs flying to Ottawa from Boston or New York (during normal business hours only). It's a small, uncontrolled airport, but it does have a non-precision instrument approach, and you can use the TAF for Massena, NY (KMSS), right across the St. Lawrence River. When I stopped on Valentine's Day 2008 on my way home from Boston, the Unicom was staffed and helpful, and the runway, taxiway, and apron were all clear, despite a heavy snowfall the day before.

Picture of david

World War II history

During the second world war, Gananoque (pronounced "gan-an-AH-kway") was a relief landing field for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) No. 31 school in nearby Kingston. It has had little modification since, and still maintains the classic BCATP triangular shape (with three runways so that taildraggers could always land into the wind) and, I believe, some of the original World War II structures.

Picture of bcrosby

Tough to find, at night.

For some reason I had a super hard time finding this airport at night coming from the south east.

Did a touch and go to build some night x-country time on runway 27. Tower guy was super friendly.

Picture of Airspeed-Alive

Fun airport!

I had to divert to Bancroft during a XC. What a great approach and departure! Reminded me of flying floats all over again. Lots of fun, and friendly people.

Picture of Airspeed-Alive

Nice strip

One of the best grass strips I've seen

Picture of david

Waterloo-Wellington stopped selling fuel

As of 1 September 2007, the Waterloo-Wellington Flight Centre stopped selling fuel, so it's available only from Flite Line.

Picture of david

re: Information?

It looks like a private grass strip on a farm. There are lots of those around, but they don't usually show up in the CFS. Contact info for the owner is in the CFS, so you can call him for permission in late May, once the ground is hard enough to use the runway.

Picture of bcrosby

Information?

This airport is listed in the CFS, however I can't seem to find any photos of what the field looks like.

I would like to visit some family in Cobalt, Ontario and flying to New Liskeard would be ideal.

Is this airport still available, or has it been abandoned?

Picture of david

Parking options

There is a very small number of tie-downs (some of which have been commandeered by a flying school) located behind the old fire hall. The only other option is to chock the plane on the apron in front of Mara-Tech. The parking charge is the same either way, and is billed by the airport by mail after your visit. There is an exit-only gate near the tie-downs so that you don't have to go through the terminal, and Mara-Tech will drive its fuel truck over to fuel your plane here.

Picture of david

Nav Canada

Nav Canada uses the old terminal now. The control tower is still located in it, and in addition to offices, there's a Nav Canada pilot kiosk on the ground floor.

Picture of david

Good service, but pricey

This is a high-quality FBO (a bit nicer than the Esso Avitat next door), but also pricey, with lots of fees and expensive gas. If you're meeting customs, you have to make at least a short stop at the Esso or Shell (your choice), but otherwise, if you don't need the shiny FBO, the Ottawa Flying Club on the north field is a less expensive option for fuel and parking.

Picture of david

Expensive

The Esso and Shell on the south field are fairly expensive for fuel and have high parking and ramp fees. Esso used to waive the ramp fee when you were meeting customs there, but I don't know if they still do that. If you don't need the full FBO red carpet service (and aren't arriving late in the evening), the Ottawa Flying Club on the north field is a cheaper option for fuel and parking.

Picture of david

Flight training but not fuel

OAS is the rival flight school to the Ottawa Flying Club across the ramp. OAS is privately-owned, and uses Katanas instead of Cessnas for training. They offer parking, but I think are not allowed to sell fuel to visitors.

Picture of david

Learned to fly here

I learned to fly here, and parked my plane here for a few years before moving to Ottawa/Rockcliffe. It's gotten busier recently, now that the club runs the professional pilot program for Algonquin College.

Picture of david

Five-minute walk from the Ottawa Flying Club

Coffee, sandwiches, doughnuts, etc. Tim Horton's is sort-of like Dunkin Donuts in the U.S., but much, much more popular.

Picture of david

Parking

In addition to the parking at the flying club on the north side of the field, you can park on the south apron by the museum if you are visiting. You need to call Rockcliffe Unicom on 123.5 MHz for taxiing instructions. I think that the parking is free.
