Reply to @RaymondR: Doesn't appear in the Water Aerodrome Supplement either.

Baie-Johan-Beetz is now in Quebec :)

This aerodrome is not currently listed in the CFS

Get some competition!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I want to travel to Kingston from Calgary: It costs $250 to fly to Toronto and then Air Canada charges $246 for a 35 min flight to Kingston because they can!

Beautiful Airport

Flew here yesterday evening, great approach for runway 26 over the lake. Just keep your eyes on the numbers and you'll be clear of the trees. Will be returning, there was no traffic when I arrived around 20:00 local.

Picture of

Runway Condition

As of 22 Jul 2014, runway partly overgrown with grass but appears to still be in fair condition, a deep unmarked ditch has been plowed across each end of the runway. Runway does not appear to have any maintenance, possible helo use only. Shown as abandoned on VNC.

Alban opening again ?

Oops typed in wrong box...

anyway in June 2014 I was told Alban strip may be opening again

Not an exciting town but friendly people and friendly airpor

Was recently weathered over here for two days. Cab fair into town is 30.00 each way. The Holiday Inn Express is nice but a little expensive. The Comfort Inn across the road is almost as nice and 50.00 a night cheaper. The Esso dealer at the airport is very friendly and helpful. The 100LL was reasonably priced but not great. There is a COPA discount but make sure you have your card. There was no landing fees and no tie down fees.

Picture of RaymondR

Simple and friendly

Arrived here on a Sunday afternoon. Nobody was a round from the airport but a local resident came by to check us out. He gave us a ride into town to get lunch. Gas is self serve and on the honour system. Call ahead and they will tell you where the key is. You then run your own Visa transaction and write it into a book.

Picture of RodeoJones

Great spot

Runway is in decent condition. About 5 min. after shutting down I saw a black bear cross the runway. Fish and Chips in town are a must. They will shuttle you to and from for free. Be aware there is now a $5 landing fee. Its nothing, but be aware of it.

Best to call in on 123.4 before landing to keep clear of landing gliders. Left hand circuits. The strip is 4,000' long - 26 and 08. Quite smooth for a grass strip.

New FBO

There's a new FBO at the end of Juliet threshold 24R called H-18 i think. They only serve Jet-A, but they offer the best service on the field. Pascan is crowded with their own airplanes and they rarely have hangar space available. h18 saved me this winter, they gave me an amazing price, even though I was in a 172 and couldn't buy fuel from them. Definitely a place to check out. And they are only 15 minutes driving from downtown!

Picture of david

Increased fees

The Porter FBO now charges $50+tax/night for tie-down for a single-engine piston plane; no discount for fuel (unless you buy more than 400 litres / 105 US gallons).

The Trans-Capital ramp at the other (east) end of the airport charges $35/night, but doesn't sell fuel.

Airport user for 20 years

This is the one of the best general aviation airport in Nova Scotia. Gas, flight training, mechanics it has it all.

I am about to land here and have lunch. Can someone pick me up.

Tiedowns

This place sucks for tie downs! Had to chip away at concrete to free up old concreted over tie downs. Not a friendly transient airport, long was from town and lodging. Only one taxi.

Villeneuve Airport

No preparation was made to make this Edmonton's alternative GA airport before closure of Edmonton's City Centre Airport (Blatchford Field). Airport services are terrible. There are no vehicle rental kiosks and no restaurants. The airport is too far from the city. And the airport has no web page!! How the heck does this airport attract any visitors with no web page? This is a terrible airport.

Picture of

Namao CAFB

Alberta (Edmonton in particular) is hell bent on removing itself from the aviation community. The Calgary Airport Authority (a privately owned operator) is the only corporation making any real effort to develop aviation interests in Alberta.

Clearing Customs from Canada to USA at Ross International Ai

One of my biggest mistakes in 20+ years of flying. I took my Cessna C172N in to what is known as Ross Inteernational Airport. Nice name but a poor excuse for an airport let alone 'International'. Just about bought the farm on this venture. Rough sod, no facilities and the Customs Officer was unfriendly because I didn't phone 2 hours prior to landing even though I had phoned earlier in the week and completed the e-aptis thing, my bad I guess. Taking off was the test, picked the wrong direction, slighly up hill, thought there was no wind but there was in the wrong direction. I really thought I was going to end up in the vehicle border crossing building. Should have taken off west and taken my chances of crashing into the cemetary. Never going in there again.

hill at southeast end of runway

Maintained by NWT Power Corporation, formerly Northern Canada Power Comission. Handle a loaded twin otter no problem. Hump approximately 3/4 of the way down the airfield heading Southeast, good takeoff aid, fairly gentle, highest point maybe 2 metres above runway. Taking off to SE, Snair Hill rises sharply to 330 metres AMSL. In an emergency, help can be found at the main hydro site, which is north on the road at NW end of runway, approximately 12 to 15 km. Hydro site has direct communication to Yellowknife, N.W.T. . There were large antennae on the top of Snare Hill as late as the early 1990's, and as it is the highest point of land in the area I am sure there will be at least 1 tower there for many years.

Hamilton

My wife and I flew into Hamilton airport about five years ago or so with Globespan from Newcastle England. It was really handy for getting to Toronto and meant we could avoid all the hassle of Pearson.Sadly Globespan went bust not long after and that was the end for Hamilton and flights from U.K. I think. We really loved our stay in Canada...wonderful friendly people and an awesome country.

Airport closed - full time landfill site

This fill activity, and others undertaken locally by the same operators under similar circumstances, has been -by several nautical miles!- the largest single provocation and instigator of changes to the way TC oversees the construction or expansion of aerodromes in Canada..so I had to go see.

There are a couple of old airplanes onsite along with the remaining threads of a windsock blowing in the wind.

The fuel pumps are still there, but not functional and in terrible disrepair. The pilot lounge no longer exists.

Airport is listed in CFS as ARCAL-X, but assuming it has not worked in years since almost every single runway marker light is smashed and runway looks very unused and unmaintained - other runways (06/24) removed and filled in.

Access to property is limited to large construction vehicles only which I understand from a driver/hardhat I spoke to amounts to approximately 400 a day....every day...rain or shine.

Unfortunately it looks like an ambitious and promising airport expansion may be the 'bait and switch' some people have predicted.

Flew in here the other day. Great little facility, but most importantly, fantastic service with a smile. Robby is a gem. I shall return !

Petawawa NDB (YWA) Heard Back on the Air Again!

Thanks @prattsoplenty for information. I’ve been monitoring 516 kHz several times each evening before midnight in hopes of hearing β€œYWA” again I’m happy to report that on March 2, 2014 at 9:40 PM EST I heard β€œYWA” on the air for the first time in about two months of silence! I monitor β€œYWA” for medium frequency radio wave propagation study. Thanks again 73, George N2CG

Re: Petawawa NDB (YWA) Not Heard Since beginning of 2014

There are no current NOTAMs (Notice To AirMen) listing the NDB off the air but there was one in January. CYWA PETAWAWA YWA- NDB 516 U/S 1401101604 TIL 1401312359. Looks like it dropped off the air on January 10th and was scheduled to be fixed by the end of the month.

Petawawa NDB (YWA) Not Heard Since beginning of 2014

Beginning in the early Fall to early Spring every year about and hour after sunset in Northern New Jersey I hear Petawawa NDB "YWA" on 516 kHz almost every evening dependng of propagation conditions. About the first week of January 2014 was the last time I've heard YWA. Is it off the air for maintenance or is it off the air for good. I sent and email to Petawawa Airport a few weeks ago but so far have not received any reply. If anyone knows what happened to YWA please post your reply here. Thanks & 73 George N2CG

Prospect Lake Airport - Construction 1986.

The airport was born from the need to spray the forest to control Bud Worm infestation. Due to safety requirements, the design had to accommodate a DC3 aircraft. In 1986 the Ministry of Natural Resources and Boise Cascade Canada worked together to accommodate construction. A float-plane dock, 80-person camp, and supporting infrastructure was constructed at the same time. The Prospect Lake Airport is accessible by road. The main roadway route in 1986 was to turn west at the turnoff near Ear Falls, Ontario. The area is very beautiful and accommodates fishing and the opportunity to see lots of wildlife. It was my favourite project and I remember when doing one of the initial surveys, my watch froze taking a Star Shot, to determine the Azimuth of the centreline of the Airstrip.

Deserves to drop behnd Calgary

Arrived 2:00 with a 6:45 AM connecting flight. Went to my departure gate to sleep until boarding, and got rousted out by a security guard. Had to leave the secure area and go back through security. Apparently they hate sleep. I hope they feel like crap that a city 1/3 the size (Calgary) has displaced them as 3rd busiest airport in Canada.

Parking for pickup

I am very disappointed with the arrangements for arriving passengers who are being picked up at the arrivals door. With the way the taxi parking and limo parking is laid out, there is only room for one or two cars to get to the curb to pick up a waiting passenger. At one point, I pulled into that slot beside another car because my wife was right there waiting. The taxi behind me laid on the horn. The plan for pick up has not been very well thought out and needs an overhaul!! I understand that the taxis need to be close to the arrivals door, but there has to be room for the private drivers to be close as well. I have been there several times, and I see no reason why the taxis can't line up on the far side of the pick up area directly across from the arrival gate. I've been to many airports in North America, but this one is the most unfriendly as far as arriving passengers being picked up by friends or family.
