Airport is now closed

According to an article on Flightglobal (http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2009/09/15/332297/fiji-closes-biaugunu-airport.html) this airport is now closed. The airport was opened in 1980 but scheduled services ceased in 1984 when better roads made travel by other means more practical.

Good restaurant on site

Good food and cheap. Right at the fuel pumps. There is also an interesting water runway parallel to the main one.

About the airport and Kapuskasing

Came here on 2009-09-12 for a Hope Air flight in low IMC, right at minima.

There are three significant buildings at the airport. From left to right, looking from the apron, they are: (1) an older white building, which apparently houses the airport's weather observer, (2) a newer building which is the main terminal, and (3) an older building a bit further to the right, which is the Kapuskasing Flying Club. You can tie down for free on the grass at the Flying Club -- the chains are marked with pylons. Even in bad weather, there are a lot of people hanging around the flying club on the weekend -- they're very friendly, and sometimes monitor the traffic frequency (there's no official FSS or Unicom): on my way in, they gave me a warning about a big flock of geese.

I'd originally planned to stay at the Comfort Inn or Super 8, but they're far out of town on the opposite side from the airport. The Park Inn is on Highway 11 (called Government Rd.) just a three or four blocks south of the town's business district and about 5 km from the airport, next door to a 24-hour Tim Horton's (like the American Dunkin Donuts chain, but far more popular) -- the Park Inn is nothing special, but it's clean and inexpensive ($64/night in September with the AAA/CAA discount). The town's business district is centred around "The Circle", a traffic circle with a park in the middle and nice shops etc. around the outside. The shops continue for a block or so on each of the spoke roads.

Unusually for a small Northern Ontario town, Kapuskasing is nice and walkable, with decent sidewalks -- there's even a coffee shop/bistro called "Back to the Grind" on the north side of The Circle. Beware that things close early, though: after 6:00 pm on a Saturday, even the big supermarket is shut down, and you're pretty-much limited to Tim's or the bars.

re: scam? teacup yorkie terriers.

OMG! i am so glad that i read this comments because there was this lady that wrote exactly what the comments says about: please send the money first so that we can send the puppy to you. Wow my mom was telling me that it was a lie and i didn't believe her. Man i am so glad that i didn't send the money. She was going to sell me a teacup terrier, because i really wanted it so i went online and i found the website and got her email and starting writing to her. she was selling it for $150.00 dollars. Man I'm glad that i read this

re: Landed in Craiova

Reply to @robert: at EUR 130, that's actually more expensive than landing at Toronto's Pearson Airport (CYYZ)! When they set a landing fee that high, it's really a "keep out!" sign.

re: Closed

Reply to @robert: changed LZVB status to 'closed'. Thanks.

Closed

By information from LRCV opertions manager (and by info from Jepessen VFR charts) this airport is closed for several years now.

Closed

Planned to go there (aug 2009) but ATC said it is closed for more than a year.

Landed in Craiova

After spending almost a year clearing formalities regarding flight approval to Romania (my plane has only permit to fly not airworthiness certificate) I finaly landed there. All OK, but the landing fee of EUR 130 for a 600kg MTOW airplane is outrageously expensive. No fuel, (virtually) no ARO - they advised me to submit the flight plan at least 3 hours before flight (I did it over phone to LJLJ ARO one four before), ...

Otherwise quite pleasant and friendly (and empty - guess why).

NOTAMS sometimes in effect for Auto Slalom Events

St. Lawrence Auto Club (of Kingston) will hold autoslaloms on various Sundays during the months of April, May, June, September & October on sections of the air strip. Best to check NOTAMS (as issued by the Prince Edward Flying Club) as the airport is closed completely (except for emergency landings) during these Sundays

Party Place?

We went out to check out the facilities at the aerodrome. There were a bunch of miscreants recovering from their party in the parking lot amongst the private hangars and business. Beer cans and underwear (no kidding) strewn all over. I'd be wary if I had a private aircraft out there.

Picture of cowtowncor

Came by for a visit

We popped by in the car to check the place out. Nice long grass strip with taxi entrance/exits on each end. Nice houses, all with private aircraft. There was even a Robinson helicopter.

re: When does it open

According the the Italian Wikipedia article, the airport has been open since the 1920s, and expanded its runway in April 2009 to handle jets like the B737 and A320. Current scheduled service is to Verona only.

Picture of ptomblin

re: When does it open

Airports don't fly anywhere. They just sit there and let the planes come to them.

Picture of

Pontecagnano Airpor

I am given to understand it opened in mid 2008 and closed soon after is this still the case?

When does it open

Is the airport open and where does it fly to?

First Solo!!

Did my first sole here a looong time ago! Note the shortness of the strip which makes it good for training.

re: An emotion of a Vietnamese-American at the Tan Son Nhat

Reply to @tt: I know what you mean, but basically it is another form of giving tips although people usually feel better if giving tips in the open space (and not being asked for) although Vietnameses are not customed to accept tips in the open space (and in front of others). In USA, I give tips to cab drivers everytime although I don't have to but I do (and usually the cab drivers don't do anything for me - I carry my own bags). So it would reasonable to give tips to people who help you with your lugages (and they will after accepting your tips).

Just another thought through my mind, what would the cab driver (in USA) says to himself if I don't give him any tip? You would never know!

Former airbase

According to the Wikipedia article, this was once a Soviet airbase. The Estonian military left in 2001, and since then, it's been used for driver training and by some motorized paragliders and ultralights. The runway is in very bad shape.

Nice little aiport

Very well maintained, and a very nice strip to land on. The airport was pretty much vacant when I was there, but it is in general a very decent facility.

re: Two separate airports

Reply to @david: Also, Airnav lists different runway lengths for the two runways. I'd suggest that maybe they used to be one and were cut in half - that would explain the remark about the ditch at one end of the runway.

Picture of ptomblin

re: Two separate airports

Reply to @david: Both airports are in the FAA database, and they list different owners. Check out the AirNav.com listings.

Picture of david

Two separate airports

This is, apparently, a separate airport from the adjacent Abba's Airport http://www.ourairports.com/airports/91OR/ -- see my comment on 91OR.

Picture of david

Two separate airports

Several sources state that Abba's Airport and Bushnell Airport http://www.ourairports.com/airports/5OR2/ are two separate airports, though a labeled photo on airnav.com suggests that they might share their runway across two properties. Does anyone have more information?
