Lancaster

Once when I was in the air over CYTZ, the Lancaster from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum flew 500 feet under me: beautiful plane. Someone told me that it's one of only two airworthy Lancs left in the world

re: status

Right now the Behala Flying Club operates a flight school here, but the government is planning to expand the airport to handle commuter airline flights:

Best aeroclub around.

This is my home aerodrome and its brilliant. If you ever get a chance to visit, do! Please note all circuits are to the east due to the 'fly neighborly' policy.

Apparently closed

I've marked this air base as closed, since it's clear from the satellite photo that a road has been built through it.

Executive Air

These folks were really great. they made my hotel and car reservations for me. Car was brought up front - ground crew was right there tying plane down and topping off. Nice place andI would definitely come back.

Nice Airport

Near Nett Lake - The system forced me to identify the airport as within the US but it is really within the territory of the Boise Forte Band.

This is the best airport for small GA for Disneyland from what I heard. We used it and liked it a lot!

P-3 strip

As VP-45 P-3 Aircrew I flew in several times. Last visit in a P-3 was interesting; #4 start valve would not open (even with a couple of whacks with a hammer) so the PPC did a runway high-speed run to spin-up start #4. As #4 started, he went to full beta thrust to stop before running out of pavement. Then taxi back with all four turning to pick up the rest of the crew for a ride back to Jax. Snorkeling there was great; it was just across the runway, and the fire department would give us a rinse off before getting back in pickle suits. Oh the days.

Good prediction Tony

I flew in for the first time today. I should have read the comments first, as I came in high an plopped it just like Tony predicted. I'll be back there later this year & will do better on the landing. I've heard that they will be adding a North/South runway this year for the G20 Summit at Deerhurst.

re: It's closed

Thanks -- the Wikipedia article confirms that the base was decommissioned in 1999, and that, after a long debate, they decided to convert it into a park. I'm changing the airport status to 'closed'.

Blog entry about this airport

Here's a blog entry from a family working in Haiti, apparently as missionaries, though the content is purely secular. Passengers arriving at PAP have to walk a long distance outside to the terminal, which is not always possible during rainy season due to flooding:

This is where I learned to fly

I did all my training from first flight through commercial at Sugar Valley. It is a great airport. The narrow (24ft) runway is different for most pilots and the 60 foot trees just off the arrival end of 20 are interesting for most pilots. If anyone wants to buy an airport, it is for sale.

Picture of

Great little strip

This is a private strip but I landed there several times while training out of Sugar Valley. It is neat how the north west end opens onto the Yadkin River.

Ice Runway

This is an ice runway that is in operation from Jan to Apr only. Check NOTAM for runway condition.

(I think this is the only ice runway in the CFS!)

Picture of

Tower

I fly traffic survey through Ft Belvoir everyday and the controllers in the tower are top-notch professionals who do a great job inspite of the often congested airspace they watch. Friendly and helpful, Davison controllers are the best in the ADIZ.

re: DH104 at YWAN

hi, just checking out the net and saw your request about the Dove at Wallan airfeild, the bad news is the engines were removed and sold on and the rest was sold to a collector, who collects old things, pity it ended up that way, it was a nice old girl, bit of a bitch to land in a good crosswind due to the riley conversion on the rudder slightly smaller than the normal rudder, there is one at the Morrabbin musem at morrabbin airport victoria, they might like to sell there`s as its only a static display rego VH-ABM,

re: Ottawa's mystery airport

Hi everyone,

I was curious to see if my website was on the web yet so I did a research on Pontiac Airpark and found your site. I guess I was more surprise to find your post than David earing about an airport East of Arnprior. You are right there is and airport (airpark) 10 miles north-east of Arnprior. The east-west runway will be 3400 feet long with asphalt and lights. 59 residential lots are for sale and it is on the Ottawa river. Floats, wheels and skis are welcome. Check my website in a few days. AndrΓ©. 819-568-2359.

Alternative airport for Mogadishu

This airport is 50 km from Mogadishu (hence the name), and is used as an alternative for scheduled airline service because of the danger around Mogadishu's main airport, Aden Adde International Airport (MGQ). It has a single sand runway.

Hard airport to love

This is a hard airport to love, which is sad, since it serves one of North America's nicest cities. Everything seems to be badly organized: when you transfer from an international flight to a domestic one, you have to exit and reenter security, which is non-trivial when you might have to line up for an hour. In customs, they keep opening and reopening dividers to make new lines, so people who've just gotten off a plane might be let through ahead of people who have been waiting 20 minutes. The whole airport seems a bit dingy and run-down, there's not much good food (in *Montreal's* airport!!!), and nothing's particularly well organized.

I wouldn't use YUL as a connector airport if I had the choice, but if you're visiting Montreal itself, it's worth putting up with the hassle to visit such a great city. If you're coming from Toronto, though, take the train instead.

re: Airport OK; getting to it, not so much

Actually, one problem with the airport was very long security lines for the C and D gates. That might have been just because it was a Saturday around spring break, but make sure you arrive very early for your flight -- don't assume you'll be through security in 10 or 20 minutes.
