Visa on arrival is slow
The good news is that you can get your tourist visa on arrival for USD 50 (cash; Americans have to pay USD 100). KLM handed out the application form on the inbound flight from Amsterdam.
The bad news is that it takes a long, long timeβmaybe 45 minutes. You line up to have you application reviewed, then line up to pay the cashier and hand over your passport, then wait (and wait, and wait) to have your name called, as they bring out small batches of passports every 5β10 minutes with the visa added. Then you line up for customs and immigration, and finally put your bags througj another x-ray machine before leaving the terminal.
Lots of checkpoints, but short lines
I lost count of the number of times I had to fill in forms and/or line up to have my passport and bags checked on departure, but on the bright side, none of the lines was long.
re: airport does not exist; can we remove this
Paul has marked this as "closed" for now. Do you know if there was formerly an airport in or near this location? We can delete it altogether if the original entry was in error.
Bad airport for connections
If you're arriving at Terminal 1 and your connecting flight leaves from Terminal 3, you'll have to retrieve your checked baggage, exit the secure area, and line up again in the public security line in Terminal 3. Be warned.
French garrison
The airstrip serves a small French garrison from RΓ©union. The island is otherwise unoccupied.
About to be privatised
Several French airports are going to be run by private operators, including this one:
Merged duplicate airports
Now just one record for this location.
Fixed record
Merged duplicate identifiers
Merged
Merged the two records.
Merged
I've merged the duplicate airports, so this is OK now.
Not bad
It's a typical West African airport. Lots of people trying to sell you stuff when you stwo outside, but no harm there. I was 20 seconds through the main security line (there's also a quick check on entry). There's a snack bar in the departure area, but also a regular frequent-flyer lounge, and a separate one with paid access (β¬8 or CFA 5000). WiFi is in and out, but then, it's free.
Beware the free WiFi
The free WiFi at BRU appears to be sponsored by a spam company β if you choose the Google login (and presumably also Facebook), it asks permission to access your full contact list. Your friends won't thank you for selling their email addresses so cheaply.
Closed?
This is a military airfield, bombed by NATO in 1999. Based on the satellite photo, the runway does appear to be maintained.
Reported as (temporarily) closed
According to Wikipedia, this airport is closed as of December 2015, but there are plans to reopen it for low-cost carriers.

Not in current CFS; runway appears disused in sat view.
Korean War history
US Marines captured this airbase in 1950, and used it to provide air support for the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Chosin_Reservoir before later evacuating. See the airport's Wikipedia article for more information.
No airport visible
Marking as closed for now

Both NDBs deleted
I've removed both of the decommissioned NDBs formerly associated with the airport.
Appears closed
I can see traces of the old runways, still, but this doesn't look like an operational airport. Please leave a comment if you have any further information.
re: IPhone app
OurAirports does not produce any iPhone or Android apps β perhaps you were looking at an app that uses the open data that we publish.
(no subject)
There's an aircraft (glider?) visible on the runway if you zoom in.
Possible alternative location
@Bill35 found a different location in a 1996 Tactical Pilotage Chart (UK Ministry of Defence military survey): -17.0049 30.8961
Zooming in shows something that might once have been a runway there, though it's much rutted and crossed by paths now. I wonder if Zimbabwe is simply reluctant to let international authorities know about how much infrastructure it has let decay during its decades of economic trouble, so it wants to keep this on the books (number of airports is one of the indicators used in international development).
In any case, we need to decide (a) whether to move the marker per the 1996 chart, and (b) whether to mark the airport as "closed" based on its visible state in the sat view. Thoughts?

Corrections
Added the Al Buraimi governorate and moved the pointer to the correct location.

Don't see an airport here
Unless that straight stretch of road doubles as a landing strip, I suspect that the source for this airport (Great Circle Mapper) just used the lat/lon of the village. Marking as closed until we have more information.
Listed separately from RAF Breighton
Although this airstrip is immediately adjacent to the (now closed) RAF Breighton, it uses a separate runway from the original, which is still visible.

This airport appears to serve mainly Rio Tinto's Simandou iron ore project; at least, it was Rio Tinto who funded the development of its instrument approaches.

Tie-down fees at Millionaire
For a Piper Cherokee-sized plane, the tie-down fee is now $40/night, first night waived with at least 15 gal fuel purchase. Still a good deal for the NY area.
Jet Systems is now Signature West
I just talked to them, and there's still no charge for clearing customs there in a small single-engine piston plane, as long as you're not picking up or dropping off passengers. +1-914-428-3730
Limited food options
There are limited food options inside airport security. There's a small snack bar with pastries (Danish, croissant, etc.) and meat pies (that will be microwaved), but not a lot else.
