re: Ultralight and Skydivers base

Reply to @dazuppa:

The trailer parks, 3 of them, are WEST of the airport, both patterns are EAST of the field.

The best way to get field info is by calling the Airport Manager found in the CFS listing, the nice folks at Toronto Aerosports are often not there for days on end.

The Parachute School of Toronto (info is available at www dot parachuteschool dot com) who also run a C-206 and several others on occasion will happily tell you what they are doing currently also.

History of RCAF Station Dog Creek, B.C.

The aviation history of the Dog Creek, B.C. airport both before and after WW-2 is covered in a full chapter in my book "North by Northwest" which is available from the author and publisher. The book lists the history of each airport in the Okanagan, Cariboo and from Prince George west to Prince Rupert. Visit the web site creeksidepublications.ca for full information.

re: Is 100 Octane Fuel Available?

According to the Canada Flight Supplement, CYPX does have 100LL available retail (extremely rare for an airport in the Canadian North). You need to give prior notice by calling 819-988-2625 during weekday hours, and have to give seven days advance notice if you plan to pay by credit card. More details in the CFS (which you should have if you're flying up that way).

Unfortunately, it's not like buying gas down south - you can't just show up, ask for a fill, and then hand over your VISA. Still, it beats having to negotiate privately to buy barrels of avgas.

Wynyard Airport renamed W.B. Needham Field

The Wynyard Airport was renamed "W.B. Needham Field" on Saturday, 27 August, 2011. Flight Lieutenant (ret'd) Needham flew with 412 Fighter Squadron through the war, with a long list of notable accomplishments including 4 missions on D-Day in his Spitfire "VZ-R" before being shot down and taken prisoner by the Germans. He served at 412 Squadron with other notable airmen including Charley Fox DFC, Bar, and Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee Jr., author of High Flight.

Location

I don't think that's the correct location. I think it's a little northeast of there. I just can't figure out exactly what field. I'm wondering if it's the field surrounded by trees, kind of a yellowish-brown patch on its own.

Mermoz used to take off here in the early days of French aviation. Today construction of appartements with only the old hangars remaining. Lasbordes NE is open for traffic.

re: Why does this helistop exist?

Reply to @ptomblin:

Nope, no hospital nearby. This is a municipal helistop and is in the middle of a large area of office buildings. My guess is that planners thought that there would be some helicopter traffic to and from the buildings and wanted to plan for general access instead of every building needing it's own stop. This, obviously, was not needed as the helicopter as a mode of everyday travel is simply silly for most people.

Great service

Landed at CYWG this afternoon and parked my Cherokee at the Avitat. The first time I looked out the window, they were fueling my plane; the second time I looked, they were washing my windshield, as if it were a 1950s gas station!

Meanwhile, the woman at the desk found me a hotel room (nice hotel, very inexpensive), a taxi, and a list of vegetarian restaurants, and didn't even require my credit card in advance (as most FBOs do).

Runways

Officially 03/21 is closed, however it is usable if necessary to avoid strong crosswinds on 12/30. Surface condition is good but no longer maintained.

New lounge at Kigali Airport

There is a new business class lounge at the airport which opened in August 2011 with free food, drinks and Internet access. Any passenger can use it for USD25 it is a welcome relief for anyone in the packed boarding gate sitting on the floor because there are not enough seats. They have a great bar for a cold beer before you get on board your flight.

Esso is great

I second the comments from @douglasr - the Esso Avitat (Thunder Bay Flight Refueling) has big-airport service without the big-airport fees (compare the Esso Avitat at CYUL or CYOW to see what I'm talking about): no ramp fee, no handling fee, no parking fee.

Ryan, who was on duty, was very friendly and professional: he even booked a hotel for me downtown and arranged for them to pick me up in their shuttle, so that I wouldn't have to pay for a taxi.

Fuel

Called the Airport manager at +1 807 597-2135.

100LL costs $1.60/liter + HST ($1.81/litre, or $6.85/US gallon). Prior notice is required, but the manager said that it usually takes only 5 minutes for someone to show up, so it's OK to land first and then call the number listed above.

Regular hours are 7:30 am to 3:00 pm local. Outside of those hours, there is a $75 callout charge.

First visit

Was asked to leave as this is a private airport and I was trespassing. It seems as though the local Airvac Service is running the show with the cooperation of the sheriff. No one attending and no 100LL.

Re: Stupid Question :)

As there isn't a scheduled air carrier that serves the Pembroke Airport, the only legal way of getting your friend out east and back would be a charter flight. That would start at about $10000 for a small piston powered aircraft upwards to $50000+ for a jet. If that interests you, search for air charter in Ottawa, Montreal or Toronto. Otherwise, you might look into a limo to the Ottawa airport and then Air Canada or Westjet.

What are the costs?

Stupid Question :)

How do I or is it possible to have someone fly a friend to newfoundland for 3 to 4 days and then pick them up. Just wondering how much something like this would cost, and where would be a good starting point to ask around?

Chilko Lake Airport

Unless there is a strong wind from the lake, use a north bound approach and land uphill. With a strong wind from lake, approach from down river, stay close to the mountain, sharp dogleg to the left, full flaps when aligned with the downhill runway. Beautifull area, fantastic fishing, watch out for the grizzlies.

Contact info, hours, and fuel

Air Creebec (Esso) FBO: +1 705 336-3517

Hours: 7:00 am-9:00 pm local Monday-Friday; 7:00 am-6:00 pm Saturday. Not sure about Sunday.

As of 2011-08-21, 100LL is available for $1.98/litre ($7.50/US gallon) + HST (13%). Fuel is generally more expensive up north due to transportation costs, so that's not too bad.

Heads Up

Some pointers:

Watch out for the trees on both sides of the runway as they are not far from the edge (~10-20ft)

Must land on RNWY 31 and take off 13.

Don't try to out climb the hill at the "departure" end of RNWY 31 as you will fail

Please keep in mind of the houses around the runway.

RNWY 31 in up hill which in turn makes RNWY 13 down hill. this is very helpful for braking on landing and accelerating on takeoff

Call before arriving 479-359-3204

Above all. Enjoy the view of Beaver Lake on approach and after Take-off

Flying at Duxford

First flew gliders at Duxford in November 1961 and my last logged flight here in June 1962.

My first introduction to a Motor tow launch.

Was based at RAF Waterbeach at the time and offered a chance to fly a Turbulent. Missed it!! John Delafield flew it though.

RAF Duxford was my first posting as a Boy Entrant (SAC qualified Air Radar Mech) in April 1959.

KFEP - Freeport/Albertus - Second Time.

Always like going into Freeport to meet up with the parents. Nice long strip, however it was short field landings today to maintain proficiency.
