Poor service

Sorry to say I received the poorest service ever at any airport here. Hopefully they were just having a bad day.

Beautiful approach

This airport has to have one of the most stunning visuals on approach. You have waves crashing up almost at the approach end of either runway. Just beautiful.

Great airport!!

This little airport is the best kept secret in Minnesota and it shouldn't be. Best pilot lounge ever!

Cafe at Yerrington is closed

The next closest restaurant is McDonald's just a short walk up the street outside the airport.

Good paint shop on the field. Had my RV-4 painted there.

Home of the Egyptian Air Academy

This is where new Egyptian Air Force pilots train, according to the Wikipedia article.

Wrong ID?

The FAA uses this id, 7GA6, elsewhere.

Picture of ptomblin

This time the FAA is wrong

For some reason, the FAA has this heliport miles away in Lowell Kansas! I'll write to them.

Wrong ID?

The FAA uses this id elsewhere.

Wrong ID?

The FAA uses 5PA0 elsewhere.

Wrong ID?

The FAA uses "LA03" on a different airport.

Homwe of Pelican Airways

I spent a beautiful sunny and humid rainy time at North Perry Airport were I passed my private pilot license in the 90's. I will never forget the British couple being the bosses of that unique flying school...

Often revisited

I love Palm Springs and had many landings at this real hot airfield.

Interesting airport at Wisconsin

I spent a couple of landings at Murmuring springs during my Biannual Review near Necedah Wisconsin; it's worth going again.

Best landing wishes Andreas Krug, Private Pilot, Lufthansa Engineering, Frankfurt, Germany

Picture of ptomblin

Wrong ID?

The FAA has a different airport with '45AR', and doesn't have this airport at all.

Picture of ptomblin

Wrong id?

There is a different 21PN in the FAA data.

Picture of ptomblin

Is this airport for real?

The FAA has assigned this id (1TX0) to another airport (LYTLE, TX) and doesn't have an airport here.

Picture of ptomblin

Closed?

Was in FAA data, isn't any more.

Picture of ptomblin

Closed?

Another one that disappeared from the FAA data.

Picture of ptomblin

Closed?

Another one that used to be in the FAA data, and isn't any more. I'm reluctant to close it, because it's private and a private individual might have their own reasons to not appear in the FAA data any more.

This used to be in the FAA data, but it isn't any more.

Picture of ptomblin

Gone?

Not in any recent FAA dataset.

Picture of ptomblin

Not in any recent FAA data

Maybe it's closed?

Picture of ptomblin

Runways?

FAA data still only shows a 18/36 turf runway, but that sure looks like a paved runway in the satellite photo.

Picture of ptomblin

A dup?

There is another Lakes Entrance Airport (YLKE) 2nm away.

Picture of ptomblin

Hmmm

I don't see an airport here.

Army

I once served here when there were jets flying.

Voronezh Aircraft Production Association

This is the home airport of the Voronezh Aircraft Production Association, one of the largest aircraft manufacturing complexes in Russia. It is closed to the public.

Good beach

Good beach nearby but track was hard to find!

Picture of Capitano.Nico

Strip condition

The strip has recently been upgraded, including markers. It is very smooth.

Fuel

There seems to be differing rates for AVGAS. Might pay to ring ahead to negotiate.

Disputed territory

This airport is operated by the Russians as part of their claim on the disputed Kuril Islands, near Japan.

Once a busy airport

This was a busy regional passenger airport during the Soviet era, but fell on hard times afterwards, and stopped operations about 10 years ago.

re: ID?

Thanks, Paul. I've switched it to the civil identifier, since that's more generally useful.

Picture of david

re: Runways?

According to the Wikipedia article they are, in fact, runways.

Picture of david

re: Closed?

Yes, the airport closed in 1989. It was actually a well-known airport before that. I found the information in the French Wikipedia.

Picture of david

re: Closed?

I agree, Paul. The Great Circle Mapper also has this airport, at almost the same location:

http://gc.kls2.com/airport/LFPR

On the other hand, the 2008-06 ICAO Location Indicators doc no longer lists LFPR, so it looks pretty likely that it's closed. Can anyone confirm when the airport shut down? I've tagged it with my "fixme" tag for now, so that I'll remember to come back to it.

New airport

According to its web site, this is a brand new airport that opened in November 2008. It does not yet appear in the Google satellite imagery.

Picture of ptomblin

Closed?

It sure doesn't look like an airport in the satellite photo.

Picture of ptomblin

Runways?

Are those runways or helicopter taxiways?

Picture of ptomblin

ID?

I think this is one of those airports where the military operation and the civil operation have different ICAO codes - if you google it, you get about 50/50 split between LSTA and LSMN. The ICAO "LocationIdentifiersbystate.pdf" says that LSMN is the military one.

Blissville and Trans Canada Airlines

Here's an edited version of an article that I wrote about Blissville.

The Blissville Airport was built in the late 1930s as part of the Trans Canada Airways system. Airports and navigation systems were built approximately 100 miles (160kms) apart, covering Canada coast to coast, to facilitate air mail and eventually passenger traffic. It was located about 30 miles (50km) SW of Fredericton on a dusty gravel road and didn’t see the first scheduled TCA flight until May 10, 1941 a stop on the Montreal to Halifax route. Evidently it wasn’t too successful as the trial ended six weeks later on June 15.

On July 1, 1944 Blissville was again added to the TCA route, becoming a regional airport for SW New Brunswick, and this time it was promoted with direct cab service both to Fredericton and Saint John. The distance to Saint John was about 35-40 miles (50-60km) SE, halfway being on dirt roads. TCA pulled out of Blissville when the Airport at Pennfield Ridge was opened up to serve Saint John on April 1, 1947. The terminal/operations building was later disassembled and moved in sections to serve the same purpose at the new Fredericton Airport (YFC) until a new terminal was built there in 1963.

Over the last several decades, the Blissville Airport has been used by Forest Protection Ltd. as a base for fighting forest fires and conducting spraying operations. It is now located just inside the boundary of CFB Gagetown with a 4000 foot (1200m) paved runway and a Military Airport code – CCH3.

(adapted from article by George Brien that appeared in the Atlantic Canada Aviation Museum Newsletter, Fall 2007)

If anyone interested, I have lots of info on TCA people that worked there in the mid 40's.

Nice Airport

I've been to Kane twice in the past two weeks (12/19/08 and 12/25/09-12/31/08). First time was for the day only in my 310 and the second time was in an Arrow. Both times I used Cirrus Flight Operations and both times I was very happy with the service I received as well as the prices for hangers and fuel. Paccair flies 310s out of Cirrus so I had an opportunity to discuss the finer points of the the old girl with freight dogs who have many more hours in them than me.

Calls for customs

There are calls for the airport to add customs services and accept international flights, so that passengers can fly directly to Chechnya, without having to pass through Moscow:

Reopened in spring, 2007

This airport was in ruins after the Chechan war, but it was repaired after the fighting died down, and was reopened for scheduled service in spring 2007. There's still occasional violence in Chechnya, but airplanes no longer have to spiral down from directly above the airport to avoid rocket fire. Here's a story from fall 2007:

re: Runway closed?

The airport was closed beginning 2006. Several country clubs will be builded in the 80 hectareas that were occupied by the airport. The first builded in 22 hectareas is named "Lagos del Norte".

Seems to also been known as SENL and Lago Agrio airport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lago_Agrio_Airport)

Picture of ptomblin

ID?

I don't believe SJXC is an ICAO id - ICAO ids for Brazil start with SB??. In DAFIF, it's SB56.

Picture of ptomblin

ID?

DAFIF and ICAO document lists this as SBFT.
