re: dont belive in people in cameroon

OMG, i was just about to make arrangement for a cat, is this all true? I was finding if weird that this person is saying they are American but when they type by email they are not making sense.

Picture of

dont belive in people in cameroon

dont belive in the people of cameroon because they never send your puppy and they are going to be asking for a lot of maoney for you to be send at some airport and everything is to be send to the same people reciving the money so its better if u found a puppy at your local area because they play with people filings.

its a huge scam. every "puppy" from douala is a scam. they are all 200 dollars and when u pay it u get an email from the airport saying u now owe 550 for the "crate". dont pay anything! get your dog in america or from a breeder.

The airport

I was there in 1985 and 1997, no it's really a good airport.

Alternative airport for Mogadishu

This airport is 50 km from Mogadishu (hence the name), and is used as an alternative for scheduled airline service because of the danger around Mogadishu's main airport, Aden Adde International Airport (MGQ). It has a single sand runway.

U.S.-built in 2005

According to this story, the base a unit of the U.S.A.F. built this base in only a few days as part of Operation Bright Star (2005), to simulate setting up an emergency air base in combat conditions. Presumably, it was then handed over to the Egyptian Air Force:

2007 Assassination Attempt

This is the airport where the Fokker 100 carrying prime minister of the CΓ΄te d'Ivoire, Guillaume Soro, was attacked after landing by rockets and kalashnikov fire in on June 29, 2007. Soro was unhurt the attack, but four people were killed and ten wounded. The attackers are still unknown:

re: website

I agree, Bill. They do have a web site, but it doesn't appear to have live arrivals/departure info on it. The Wikipedia article (linked under the map) does list the airlines and destinations, though.

Wrong location?

I think that this should actually be the location of FBGM (Gumare Airport), since it's right north of the town of Gumare. The village of Nokaneng is 30-40 km to the south. Even Garmin has this wrong (if it is wrong).

Picture of david

Possibly wrong

I think that this airport should actually be where FBNN (Nokaneng Airport) is shown just to the north of the town of Gumare, and FBNN should be 30-40 km south in the village of Nokaneng. If that's true, though, then even Garmin has it wrong right now. Currently, everyone shows Gumare more-or-less in the middle of the town.

Former RAF station

Wadi Seidna (or Wadi Saidna) was an RAF station before Sudanese independence. I believe that this is still an active military base for Sudan's air force.

Reopened in 2006

Mogadishu's airport has been closed periodically because of fighting around the city. It last reopened in August 2006, and is still operational.

re: Is this plane stranded?

According to Wikipedia, the plane is a DC-8 that has been stranded since the eruption.

All the best,

David

Picture of ptomblin

Is this plane stranded?

There doesn't appear to be a taxiway to the south that could get it to the runway.

re: Runway shortened by Lava

In the satellite picture, it looks like there is a very large airplane with no way to get to the runway. I wonder if it's really cut off, or if they taxi it over the lava flow?

Picture of david

Runway shortened by Lava

A 2002 volcanic eruption nearby sent a lava stream over the north portion of the runway. The south portion of 18/26 is still operational.

On 15 April 2008, a Hew Bora Airways DC-9 lost power to an engine during its takeoff roll, attempted to abort, and overran the end of the runway into a crowded market immediately to the south of the airport:

re: Cessna 210 crashes after takeoff

Hi,

In defense of Eros Airport as such, the Pilot was NOT familiar with the Airport and took the shorter run-way with an overloaded Plane. Having 5 Passengers in a 210 on a very hot day at 5600ft ASL is looking for problems.

It is sad that Namibia gets such negative publicity, due to one Airline not putting Safety First. :(

A Namibian.

MALLAM AMINU KANO INTL. AIRPORT

This intl. airport operating in in the commercial city of Kano, Nigeria is a small international airport with few flights flying internationally like KLM, Middle East, Egypt airlines etc. Not known for the infrastructure.

Nice place to go

the picture here shows the airport in 2005 just after the runway had been prolonged. the circular open space at RWY23 is where now stands a VOR emitter. The airport handles several intl flights from/to Italy, France, La RΓ©union & Mauritius. There are of course domestic flights performed by Air Madagascar, the local, and only, and national, airline. Nosy Be is indeed a nice place to visit

Lodging

Stay at the Riu Funana all inclusive resort. All meals and booze are included in the room price. It's a beautiful place and only one of two places I would stay at Sal. The rest of the island is barren and primitive...like Mars.

Kinshasa's other airport

According to an interesting article in Vanity Fair's July 2007 issue ("Congo from the Cockpit" by pilot/writer William Langewiesche) this aiport lies in the centre of town. When he lands, there are people walking across the runway, carrying items on their heads, apparently oblivious to the plane landing. People grow vegetables in the grass near the runway, soldiers have taken over some of the empty hangars, and their children play among the moving airplanes, unconcerned about the danger. A very interesting article.

Designated Emergency Landing for US Space Shuttle

According to an article in Vanity Fair's July 2007 issue ("Congo from the Cockpit" by pilot/writer William Langewiesche) the single, 15,420-foot runway, is designated by the US as an emergency landing strip for the space shuttle. According to Langewiesche, the ramp is crowded with "decrepit jets that are too fragile for the country's dirt strips, but can manage the paved runways of eastern and southern Congo." Interesting article to read.

Runway full of potholes

An interesting article in Vanity Fair's July 2007 issue called "Congo from the Cockpit" by pilot/writer William Langewiesche describes the runway as asphalt, but "jarring", as pilots have to "pick our holes". The article is definitely worth reading, as the conditions some of these pilots fly under are pretty extreme.
