My first controlled airspace.

I was so nervous nearly missed the approach. Lovely place to have a snack.

Avis doesn't need a deposit

For car rentals at the Waterloo airport this weekend, Hertz was sold out and National was demanding a credit-card guarantee with a $50 penalty for cancelling with less than 24 hours notice. Avis, however, let me book with no deposit and no problem.

The Hansen's and thier airstrip

Super nice people and a wide and long airstrip. Jim and Diane go above and beyond being hospitable and thier home (lodge) is unique (very cool) which is located right at the end of the runway or beginning.

It's 2600 feet long and Jim continues to lengthen and widen it.

Fuel

The Fort Severn Airport does not sell 100LL AvGas. The airport manager believed that the local First Nation might sell it by the barrel (1 barrel=37 US gallons), and suggested calling the band council secretary at (807) 478-2572.

100LL is available from the pump at the Churchill Airport, 262 nm to the northwest, and at the Moosonee airport, 378 nm to the southeast.

Im in nor. cal and someone has been emailing me with the email address

"henry Morgan" @yahoo.com>

He says he moved from the US to Cameroon, and has an english bulldog, whos name happens to be the same as mine... which is extremely strange.. however, its a good ploy to use when trying to sell people a "fake" dog.

He almost got me, until I saw this add. He had emailed me his info, and I decided to look it up and saw all these comments.

Its horrible how people are doing this. I have been looking for this breed for months now, and got extremely excited.

I hope that email address and name helps, incase he tries to scam anyone else!!

re: English Bulldogs $197 shipping only! ***FAKE***

I have been emailing with someone who says he has a english bulldog as well and will be shipping it out of Douala Airport, and would like me to wire him $200.00

I was very interested in his puppy, but now believe it is a fake, and am extremely upset. Thank god I came across this, because I was so close to wiring him money for a bulldgod.

Latest FAA data

The latest FAA dataset has this airport's id as "54X", but that could be a mistake on their part. They've made worse mistakes in the past.

Fond-ish memories

I remember many evenings spent in LAX terminal 2 in the late 1990s, waiting to catch the red-eye back to Toronto to connect on to Ottawa and get back to my young family. I hear a lot of horror stories about LAX and Air Canada now, but back then, before the merger with Canadian, Air Canada never left me stranded or let me down. I'd fight my way back to LAX from Long Beach through the rush-hour traffic, drop off my rental car, then find a plug, huddle in a safe warm corner, and work on my computer for a few hours, generally grabbing a bite from the Wolfgang Puck franchise restaurant thingy and happy knowing that I was on the first stage of my trip home.

I've been through terminal 2 a few times since, but not for the red-eye. Air Canada still generally leaves on time, but I'm not rushing back to young kids and a tired spouse any more, so it's more leisurely, and the terminal is just another dingy terminal.

Concord crash site

On 25 July 2000, Air France flight 4590, a Concord, had just taken off from nearby Charles-de-Gaulle Airport (CDG) with its fuel tank on fire. It attempted to divert to Le Bourget, but was not able to make it, and crashed into a hotel short of Le Bourget.

Whitewater Lake Sudbury Aviation

I grew up maybe a mile from Sudbury Aviation. As a kid in the early sixties I hung around there a lot. My cousin Ray (Romain) Labine was an instructor at Sudbury Aviation. Unfortunately when Charlie went in he brought 3 other guys with him. He took off in snow showers lost VFR and flew into the ice at Scotia Lake. My first ride ever in a plane was with my uncle Ray Labine in one of those Fleet Canucks that was probably around 1960. I obtained my licence in 1974 at Muskoka airport, I went on to get my multi-IFR and commercial and flew for Shell as the aviation sales manager out of Montreal.

When you were flying out of Whitewater the business was owned by John and Pearl McMahon. Both are now passed away. John of Alzheimer's and Pearl of a stroke. My parents new them well.

I dropped by Sudbury Aviation last week to say hello. I now live in BC and fly a Cessna 182. Sudbury Aviation now uses two DHC-2's (Beaver) and one Cessna-185 for charters and a Cessna 172 for instruction. The business has been owned by Margaret Watson-Hyland for probably the last 25 years.

Musical Ride horses

This is where the Royal Canadian Mounted Police graze the horses for their famous Musical Ride. I guess that the airplanes passing 50-100 feet over the horses constantly get them used to loud noises, so that they don't startle easily.

Seasonal Barbeque

Tony runs a seasonal barbeque (and other food) with very reasonable prices. The original grill was destroyed in May 2009 by a tree during a tornado, but club members have been working to build a new space for the grill.

Road to the airport

This is the only road into the main part of the airport (and yacht club). It's now called "Airport-Marina Drive," not "Polaris Drive", and turns off the Rockcliffe Parkway about a kilometre east of the Aviation Museum exit. There is also pedestrian access through the museum, but only to the museum's own ramp, not to the rest of the airport.

Fees at Trans-Capital

When Trans-Capital sold Esso fuel, it used to be a great deal for parking. Now, unfortunately, the parking charges are virtually the same as Porter's. Updated by phone 2009-06-29, confirm by calling Trans-Capital at (416) 361-1100. All prices Canadian:

Ramp fee (under 20 minutes, single-engine piston): $20

Ramp fee (over 20 minutes, single-engine piston): $25

Overnight parking (single-engine piston): $35

Trans-Capital no longer sells fuel, but the Porter FBO fuel truck will come over and fuel your plane there. No point, really, since you might as well just park at Porter.

Picture of david

Fees and fuel update for Porter FBO

Updated by phone 2009-06-29. Call the Porter FBO at (416) 203-2424 for confirmation. All prices Canadian.

Fuel (100LL): $1.60/litre + GST (CA $6.06/US gallon)

Ramp fee (single-engine piston): $25

Overnight parking (single-engine piston): $35

Note: parking and ramp are mutually-exclusive -- you don't have to pay both.

Need heliport location

Borgo Maggiore has an international heliport, but I have not been able to find an identifier or location for it. Right now, this airport is pointing to the main traffic circle in the centre of Borgo Maggiore, which almost certainly is *not* a heliport.

Please help if you know or can find the location.

This was formerly Bangladesh's main civilian airport. When Zia International Airport (DAC) opened in 1981, the Bangladesh Air Force took over operations at Tejgaon, and it now operates as part of BAF Base Bashar.

The Original Berz Airport in Troy

I use to work at the original Berz Airport off maple rd in the 60's as a teenager for Milt Jr. and his Dad , who we all called "Pappy" he was a great man to work for and I think Sharon was the girl that use to talk to all the pilots. There was another elderly man that use to make coffee in the mornings for all the people that use to just hang out in the terminal, but can't remember his name right now. My father bought into a piper 180 and had it in a hanger, I myself use to fuel the plane and wash them I really enjoyed working there , except when we had to get up at 2 am in the morning and plow the runways because to much snow fallin that night. The airport is shown on the sectional chart as a circle without the 3 bumps, which means no services. Your best option may be to go to KTPH.

English Bulldogs $197 shipping only! ***FAKE***

I was told that I would be getting a very cute and loving Bulldog puppy. I felt at the beginning that it was too good to be true. And it was. Thank God I asked a lot of questions about where the dog would be coming from and the location of the airport. I was planning on looking the airport up and calling to confirm the boarding of the dog. As I started searching the internet I came across this comment box and started reading. All the stories sound the same down to the broken english, the pushiness, and how urgent it was that the dogs flight be paid because she was already being sent to the airport the day i first e-mailed them.

After that I felt is was a scam. Wouldn't they need to pay up front to have the dog registered at the airport? I also wanted to know why I could not pay the airport directly from my credit card for the dogs flight. They also said that they were on vacation in Africa. Why would they bring puppies along and try to find homes across seas for them and how would they know the price of the shipping before knowing where the dog would be shipped to. They also seemed to respond back very fast no matter what time in the day it was. The last three e-mails I received were very pushy and trying to make me feel bad about not having paid the shipping. If they were good con-artist they would not have been so pushy and would have made the transaction more to my convenience. Thanks to the other posts now they will definitely not receive my money.

Scars

This is obviously an old photo (pre 17Jan) as you can clearly see the scars left by the undercarriage and engines of the BA38 on the grass area. It shows as a very bright green set of 'tracks'. Could google send their satellite over LHR again soon to see them please?

re: SBIA

There are no commercial passenger flights into Subic, try Clark International, it is only about one hour drive away now that the new toll road is open. Clark has budget connections (TigerAirways, Cebupacificair) from Singapore for example.

OY-JET

If you want to see cluelessness in action, google for the OY-JET video. A jet registered in Denmark "landed" at Bader Field, landing downwind on a runway NOTAMed against jet operations, touched down at about the half way point on a runway that would have been too small for that jet even without a tail wind and without leaving half the runway behind them, skidded into the bay, and then after everybody was evacuated one of the jet engines seemed to start up and start pushing the plane around the bay.

re: Just had to get this one in while it is still on the map

Reply to @XingR:

And that's one of the excuses they always use for closing airports. They build these monstrosities near the approaches (even though there are usually lots of other places they COULD build them) and then later claim that "it's dangerous to have an airport near all these people." In this case, they even build a sports stadium basicaly *ON* the airfield. *sigh*
