CORRUPT CORRUPT CORRUPT

Just paid 50usd for some Kipling bags and wallets that were not even of that value!!!! Did so only because they look menacing enough to do something else if you told them they can eat their bags. It was a great trip ruined by these custom sharks. Bet they ate all the crocs and turned one inside. Still fuming mad. Our tour guide WARNED us that an unlucky few can experience this, guess we are unlucky then. But these CORRUPT officials will certainly be the unlucky ones when the time comes. Seriously.

Home Affairs agent refused to allow me into South Africa bec

I just passed through JNB airport (16:10 PM on December 21). I am on a one-night layover from Malawi to the United States, a layover I have a half dozen times per year for work-related travel. As I have completed this exact itinerary many times in the past, I was one of the first off of my flight to arrive in the cue for non-visa countries. Much to my dismay, between when I entered the metal maze to get to the front and when I actually got to the front, a Home Affairs agent had allowed dozens of people from the visa-required line into the non-visa line. So, I was about 30 people back in line than I would have been if I had gotten to the metal maze 30 seconds earlier seconds earlier. Now, I can understand reallocating people across lines, but the problem is that visa-required visitors take a longer time to process, so it is inefficient for everyone and frustrating for customers to reallocate people between these lines. By the time I got to the front of the line, I was admittedly impatient. I did not say anything, however, as I stepped up to the desk. The Home Affairs woman looked at me and said, "Choose another line." And I said, "Why?" And she said, "I did not like how you threw your passport at me." I moved to another line, where I was processed expediently.

Now, as a technical point, it would have been impossible for me to actually throw my passport, as I had to reach around the previous person to even put it on the counter, as he was taking a long time to pack up his belongings.

But that is, of course, not the point. The point is that it is not the role of an immigration agent to decide who gets to enter the country based on manners or demeanor. They process documents, not personalities. Further, my behavior was not at all problematic. I did not say a single word to her or take any action other than putting my passport on the counter. Again, I fully acknowledge I was impatient. But given the notorious lines at security and passport control at the Johannesburg airport, this is, unfortunately, a common sentiment among the customers waiting in line. As a visitor in this country, I have no obligation to arrive smiling and deferential when I greet the Home Affairs agent. For better or for worse, I am entitled entry to the country regardless of my mood, as long as my documents are in order and I present no security risk.

In fact, there is some argument to be made that I, as the visitor and the customer, have less of an obligation to be solicitous and courteous than she does, as a customer service agent representing the South African government and the first point of contact for hundreds of visitors to the country every day. The most unfortunate part of this interaction is that I told two people of the interaction after it happened and before I wrote this email - one person who let me go ahead of him in the other passport line, and one person at the baggage claim. Both said the same thing: β€œWell, welcome to South Africa.” It is people like this Home Affairs agent - people who prioritize their ego over hospitality, who wish to judge visitors instead of welcome them, and who believe they have power and discretion they do not have - that make people worldwide believe that South Africa is an unfriendly place. This belief, in turn, affects South Africa’s position in the global economy.

I sincerely hope that JNB takes this situation as an opportunity to educate Home Affairs agents on being ambassadors of courtesy and generosity to those visiting the country. South Africa certainly doesn’t need more of a reputation for exclusion and judgement.

Whatever happened to Dunnottar Air Force Base ?

Whatever happened to Dunnottar?

Postby ICEMAN Β» Sat Apr 15, 2006 4:06 pm

I know the airforce deserted Dunnottar Airfield a couple of years ago, maps show it as "abandoned". The runways were huge and managed multiple formations of training harvards simultaneously....

Anyone know what happened to the runway and facilities? is it pvt or still government owned? It the runways are still there, it would make a spiffy :) :) :) place for a micro sortie, so any ideas who to contact for permission?

SAd to see how the bases are being closed one by one. First they use the equipment until it is broke then they pass it on to another dept and aventually its closed. I had abloody good time at Dunnottar and a number of pilots and students learnt what they today know about flying on that base. My eldest son was born there so we have asoft spot for the place and ofcourse the old trusty Harvard, and what do some of the other people who stayed at dunno's say.

What a pity, what a waste....... i heard a few years back that the plan was to revamp, convert and expand it into an international airport to alleviate some of the JIA traffic and congestion.

But then again, that was about the same time that the Lesotho Military open up a can of "whip-arse" on us.

Iceman,

Check with Fred Blokland, or any triker from Springs on this forum and enquire. I trained at Springs a few years ago and often, the instructor and I would go there for circuits and bumps. It was nice & quiet so you could concentrate on the flying and not worry too much about traffic.

Lately I believe that some paragliders or powered parachutists have used it as a launch site but this info is not necessarily accurate.

Regards.

Dunnotar !!

Postby Chaz Β» Tue Apr 18, 2006 1:24 pm

Heya folks :!: :!:

Your'e right ACE Dunnottar is being used by the paragliders. Flew over there the other afternoon and whilst alerting traffic under special rules East was told to be on the lookout for some paragliders in the area.

You right about the Harvards Agent think, all S.A's have a soft spot for them. At Springs for those who are not aware you can go in one of two Harvards for either a 15 minute flip or 20 minute Aerobatic flip. Only 11 Harvards left flying in the entire country and the Harvard Club of South Africa dont know how much longer they can keep them going due to lack of support. Normal flip R450.00 and aerobatic flip R800.00.

Chaz,

Thanks for the update, at least the facility is still being used for flying purposes.

Only 11 Harvards left flying in the entire country

wow, thats not namy left, i grew up in benoni in the 80`s and remember the large numbers of SAAF students from dunottar passing overhead on training excercises in the summer afternoons........, wave after wave of 15-20+ at a time, to be dead honest i firmly believe thats where and when my eyes first turned skywards :-(-( :-(-( .... very impressive stuff for a young boy...

(ps: Ace.... i see we share the same legal representaives.... Smith, Wesson and Associates. )

i believe that at one time, dunnottar operated the largest fleet of harvards in the world

The announcements at O.R. Tambo cannot be understood in spite of dedicated attempts. If I am wrong.....I challenge any of the management or staff to a decipher the announcements accurately.

Picture of

Likely not an airport!

Several sources give this position but looking on the map above shows that this position is highly inaccessible in the mountains! Maybe, maybe a heliport?!

Picture of

No airport seen

When looking at this coarse position In Google Earth, no airport is found.

Picture of

Heliport?

According to Landings (www landings com) this is a heliport in position 09Β°02'23.20"S 075Β°30'25.30"W. Also looks like this in Google Earth, at least if one steps back in time to 2008.

Picture of

Not an airport?

This seems to be an ICAO-designator for something else than an airport. Maybe an heliport or abandoned?
