info about airport

Military base, closed. No tower, no radio.

Don't try to land. Many crap on landing zone.

Now it was used for car games, like rally, dragrace, etc.

re: Closing all operations

Wikipedia says:

The airport is currently closed to air-traffic, although the concrete paved runway has been designated for use by cargo flights in the event of an emergency. There is an aerospace museum on site.

Closing all operations

As far as I know this airport is completely closed.

FYI, EGSS runways have for the past 1 year plus been redesignated 04/22.

Picture of

Scheduled Opening???

Think I am little late in jumping on this bandwagon but having been doing research on different areas in Portugal, got quiet excited and enthused when I found a piece about a new airport at Beja with an opening date of Spring 2011. Having read all the comments about delays and missed deadlines, feeling slightly deflated!!! This would be an excellent opportunity to bring tourists into an unknown and beautiful area of Portugal - however's decision it is, just make it, there is so much obvious support and need.

Hi all.

Just wondering why aircraft don't do auto landings with all the money that was spent on upgrading the new terminal/runway.

re: misplaced

I moved the icon to the vicinity of the hospital for now -- it's difficult to make out the exact helipad location on Google Maps.

Picture of ptomblin

re: misplaced

Eurocontrol has a heliport at this location, called "GRAZ LKH" with ICAO id "LOGH".

Picture of

misplaced

I would not recommend landing here ;)

It looks like a forest and, yeah, it is a forest and definitively not a heliport.

Maybe the heliport of the hospital about a km west was meant, although that one is not open to public.

re: Civilian carriers V Military aircraft

You refer to the DC-10 as an old airframe, and yet you prefer the VC-10, which first flew nearly 50 years ago? I'm willing to bet the DC-10 is *way* more fuel efficient and cheaper to operate. Probably safer too. And according to Wikipedia, the only flying VC-10s are tankers - the rest are there for spare parts.

Wikipedia also says that some of the Tristars passenger/tanker combos, and some of the passenger Tristars have counter measures against ground fire so they are used to fly people into possibly hostile places like Iraq and Afghanistan. So it's not that they don't use the Tristars, just that they don't waste them on moving people around in safe airspaces.

Picture of

Civilian carriers V Military aircraft

Why do we use Civilian carriers (normally the cheapest bidder, like the recently bust 'Fly Globespan', or the oldest airframes, like Omni Air's DC-10s) when the sides of the runway at Brize are lined with RAF VC-10s and Tristars? What is the point having RAF passenger aircraft if we don't use them regularly?
