Picture of airbound

X25 - Arcadia - Night is Dark

Landed here during night training - moonless, cloudless, landing RWY 5 the runway lights/environment just float is a sea of darkness - needless to say the first landing approach was high.

LEE - Leesburg - Helpful ATC

One of the many airports on my solo XC during ASEL - controllers very helpful even recognizing return flights.

Picture of airbound

CGC - Crystal River - DQ Stop

Flew into CGC for Solo-XC as part of ASEL. Easy to spot from SE.

Extra bonus - a Dairy Queen adjacent to field, great refreshment after baking in the sun for a few hours.

KMSN - Madison - Wisconsin Aviation treats you very well

Awesome experience for a day trip into MSN.

Wisconsin Aviation had me park the Cherokee right up in front next the bus. jets -

Courtesy car available and clean.

C02 - Grand Geneva -

Another SE Wisconsin trip worth the visit. The resort is upscale and boasts a great lunch.

Town of Lake Geneva is a few minutes away and offers shops, water activities, beach. Just a great place to loaf a day away.

As the former Playboy club property from 1968 till 1983, there is an occasional re-union - how do I know? I just happened to take the father-in-law in for a flight.

Picture of airbound

C59 - Lake Lawn Lodge - Hope it reopens

A great place just to go for lunch.

Took the family for a day outing to play around the lodge.

Lodge and Airstrip closed in late 2010. I hear the lodge may re-open in 2011. Don't know about the airstrip.

05C - Griffith-Merrillville - Mexican Food on Airport

Great place for both 100LL and Human Fuel (on airport Mexican cafe).

If you're there at night during late summer, watch out for mosquitoes - they are huge and have a big appetite (I had quite the cabin cleanup after smashing a dozen or so).

Picture of airbound

KPGD - Punta Gorda - Awesome Bay Views

Views of the bay towards the west are fantastic.

Picture of airbound

X07 - Lake Wales - Lots of Rubber on the RWY

Many tire marks from my primary training at Lake Wales.

A bit deserted but a good place for practice

Picture of airbound

CDK - Cedar Key - Gulf Front

Awesome little strip just off the water - spectacular views.

Watch the sea breezes.

Not for me...

Drove in this evening (7PM) for a friendly hello and to check out grass landing strip..... Manager was very gruff and overly aggressive.... not good for someone in business... too bad... I might have wanted to tie my plane(s) down there..... I wouldn't land there now in an emergency. Good luck!

Great service.

Gary McCartan is awesome. Bends over backwards to be of service to you as a pilot.

Picture of

NICE!

The grass strip at Randle-Kiona Airpark is lovely. The folks who live there must be proud of their hard work at making their landing strip so nice.

Picture of

El Jardin Ranch

Private airstrip of Oil and Gas tycoon Rod Lewis. Has been known to keep a number of warbirds here. Anita Perry, Governor Perry's wife, was uninjured in a mishap of a B-25, on which she was a passenger, here on 3/26/11.

re: My Hometown Airport

Very interesting post, as I too watched aircraft as a young child right here. It saddened me to see this airport dwindle in the 90's. I now run Appalachian Inspection and Maintenance on this airfield, along side Elkins Aviation (flight school) and Advanced Avionics. This airport is once again coming alive!

great little field

friendly people, super airport!

signage

Flew here again a couple weeks ago. Nothing has changed really - great terminal is still deserted. What a waste of $$. Maybe they should have spent some of the cash on signage. Noticed this time - there is not ONE runway or taxi sign on the airport. Even with a map from the AOPA database in Foreflight it was confusing finding runway 5 start. Paint is worn off as well so watch out crossing runways with no signs or markings.

Picture of evorbach

OK place

Very convenient - nice girl at the counter - line boss was a little rude. Tower guy tried to sandwich me in front of another Cherokee on straight in final - asked me to turn toward the runway from my base leg. I did. Then he complained that I didn't turn enough towards the runway and then gave me a vector - which I followed. If ya want me to turn to a heading - tell me which and I am good - his vector put me on the numbers so my final was never established straight in - more like a 45 degree final. Not a problem really, but he was all pissy that he had to circle the other Cherokee on final - not my bad dude - I was Number 1 - was flying the base leg he told me to fly at an appropriate airspeed for the Arrow - 100MPH.

Won court battle

This airport just won a lengthy court battle to stay open, but there are some restrictions on takeoffs and landings. See http://www.aviationcadet.com/SWFrestrictions.html for details.

FBO

Have stopped several times at Eagle Aviation. They are always friendly and helpful.

Picture of

History of Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport

The airport was built by a farmer on his farm in 1960. He ran a fixed base operation, including a flight school and a Piper dealership. He fought battles over zoning, neighbor complaints, and the city of Indianapolis wanting to take over ownership, which they did in 1967. Read the history in 175 pages and over 200 photos. Available on Lulu.com.

Landing

Land north and take off south.

Little Bakery

Nice airstrip. FBO is kind of not much, but there is a great little bakery on the airport. Grandma's? Anyway - great hot coffee and good fresh baked goods. They are going to start serving breakfast as well, but even if they don't - I would go back.

Picture of

Keep your eyes open for 4 footed friends

You need permission in advanced to land at Trade Wind, but when you do keep in mind it's now known as a dog park and heavily populated with dogs and kids running all over the runways. 6/24 is active and 15/33 is now only used as a taxi way, but there is one aircraft in the last surviving hangar on the property.

Picture of

Rio Concho

They don't even do the Burgers anymore since this past summer restaurant has been shut down.

Closed

This is the airport where I learned to fly. There's some court activity to return it to active status, but for now it's closed, and somebody dug a ditch across the runway, Mayor Daley style... :-(

Cross winds most of the time

Runways 02 -20 usually have crosswinds.

No longer a usable facility; overgrown, not recognizable.

KHRO

Very nice runway. 18/36 150' wide in excellent condition. Nice FBO and fuel is reasonable but can be found cheaper at 4M1 at any time. Fuel is 24hr self serve at both places. Crew cars available as well as hotels and decent places to eat. For short stays, the FBO offers hangared storage for a reasonable fee ($25/night I think is what I paid). FBO has nice pilot lounge with recliners and internet access. Newly remodeled and includes a single pilot sleep area!
