re: I Took My Instrument Checkride With Jean

Hello, I came across this website today trying to find out what happened to Rose Aviation at Hawthorne Airport and saw your post. My name is Linda Silvertooth, I am the Linda you mentioned in your post. I worked at Rose from 1977-1981 and have kept in touch with several other friends from those days (Kathy Hesse, Kevin Clover). I knew Jean as the former owner and and as an FAA Pilot Examiner, Art was the owner at the time I was there. Jean passed away in the early 80’s and Art passed away in 2018. I know Claude is gone also but I don’t remember when he passed. I took several check rides from both Jean and Claude…..great people!! I saw Don Pedersen in 2013 at a Rose reunion, he was the Chief of Police for Culver City at that time, but I think he has retired. Were you at Rose Aviation during those years? I went on to work for the FAA for over 35 years and retired in 2020. It was a great time during those days at Rose! Linda

Fuel stop

Would like to see in daytime. Stopped in for fuel because 05C doesn't have after hours fuel.

Picture of AlanM70

Dropped off a new freind

I would like to see it in daytime. Maybe even try out the Mexican. They need to put in self-serve fuel

Picture of animebirder

Runway Cafe

I've never seen an airport diner that served pad thai before. Or mariscos. On the same menu as your classic burgers and steaks, and all excellent!

Picture of AlanM70

Stopped in for fuel

Just stopped in for fuel on my way by.

Plain little Airport

Went down do deliver parts and to work on a center pivot

Heliport coverage by the FAA

... is NOTORIOUSLY bad. Even heliports that have continually existed for the last forty years are routinely given GPS coordinates up to 10 miles off course.

Picture of dziban303

This heliport doesn't exist.

This heliport doesn't exist, and hasn't for *years*, if it ever did. There is no pad here, or anything else for a helicopter to land on besides sodden grass. There is no access besides a nearby dirt track. The Sun Drilling Products building is located miles away from the given location. Easily accessible satellite imagery with resolution adequate for spotting a helipad became available with Landsat 4 in 1982: there's no pad then, or in any year.

Picture of Dmiddlet26

Fun place to land

The grass rwy is still maintained… landed there a bunch of times in 2021. Its not charted and you have to call or know the owner

I took a helicopter flight here

I'd always wanted to ride in a helicopter, so my wife bought me a ride on one -- I actually got to control it for a few minutes.

Re: PVG

Multiple airports can have the same three-letter code in *different* organization systems. Yes, PVG is the IATA code for Shanghai Pudong, but PVG is also the FAA LID for Hampton Roads. Note that Shanghai Pudong won't *have* an FAA LID because that is only for airports within the United States.

Obviously the ICAO codes (ZSPD and KPVG) are therefore quite different.

Picture of THEharrypotter

THIS IS NOT THE REAL PVG

pvg-->ZSPD--> airport in shanghai, china

Misplaced all along.

The FAA had this misplaced the whole time.

Picture of davidmclark

This Airport no longer exists

The Motel and airport was sold a year or two ago and has been removed and replaced with a Travel Trailer sales display space. So Airport no longer exists.

Waiting for me!!!

Sad that this is now slated to be closed soon!

Sad that this is now slated to be closed! I visited 11-19-21 so I could have it in my logbook before it's gone...

Name of Airport

Maybe someday it will be the β€œSaint George-Southwest Utah International Airport” but currently it is the St George Regional Airport

Picture of AlanM70

Nice airport

Fuel pump card control wasn't working but friendly local helped out.

Picture of AlanM70

Really nice airport for a municipal airport

Stopped in to drop off a passenger. Friendly attendant and wasn't too scary to fuel up

Picture of animebirder

If it did exist, it wasn't here.

FAA is notoriously bad at plotting correct lat/longs of heliports. This probably did exist somewhere within a 5 mile radius of this spot. AirNav doesn't list RI14 anymore at any rate.

The runways are actually 01-19.

Picture of wolfgangx

no after hours restrooms

doors lock at 5

Picture of AlanM70

Nice little airport

Just dropped in to meet someone with tractor parts for me to take home for some friends.

Picture of AlanM70

Nice Runways for a small place

Stopped in for Fuel after picking up some parts for a tractor across the lake.

Closed

Airnav and FAA now list this as CLOSED INDEFINITELY so there we go.

Hurricane Ida!

Great airport. My first visit was to drop supplies for victims of Hurricane Ida. The place looked like a war zone, in part because an army search/rescue unit was staging from there. Hope to be back when they've built back!

Picture of AlanM70

Nice Older Airport

3 runways 2 grass 1 cement look to be in good shape. Went down to work on an irrigation engine. Was a sign on nice big hanger β€œfor sale or rent” I would love to have it at home.

Picture of AlanM70

Nice Airport, Clean newer FBO

Always fun to add a new airport. Flew in for a family reunion. Was met by family but do have curtesy car.

Picture of BryanAV8R

My Home Field

Earned all my ratings here...from PVT up through CFI-IA. Great facilities, 2 flight schools on the field, maintenance is top-notch, Garmin dealer, and plenty of hangar space (not cheap, but not overly out of line for the area). AIrport has been in operation since the 1920s, and has a good working relationship with the town after many years of issues during the 1980s...could stand as an example of how to go along to get along in the most densely populated state in the US.

Picture of wolfgangx

Amazing approach

Incredible views coming and out of this airport. Very tight canyon

Picture of wolfgangx

Great gas stop

Nice airport with reasonable Alaskan gas prices

Crazy indeed!

You'd have to be crazy to land here! Fun to fly by though!

Picture of wolfgangx

Never ending sunset

I landed here at 2am on 7/30 after landing at Deadhorse around midnight. Night may not be the right word since it was basically a 4 hour long sunset/rise. Absolutely incredible

Picture of shumphries

Elevation: ZERO!

Great airport with helpful service, chilled FBO, and cheap gas. But I came here for the selfie with the airport sign showing "Elevation: 0.0"!

Picture of wolfgangx

First gravel strip

Landed here in a bonanza v35. Amazing park and service in McCarthy. Runway was fine and we had a great time exploring the glacier

Picture of wolfgangx

Friendly line service

Stopped here for gas on my way to norther AK. Staff came out to pump my gas and even gave us two homemade cookies!

Picture of Cpfau182

Great Service

Stopped to see 90 year old aunt. Flew her around Albany.

Update

I've given this a provisional name based on the location, but I've come up with the same problem as @im -- not mapped, no data available. More research needed.

Picture of shekhar

Crowded airport

I have been to the San Diego airport several times to drop my mom it is a very crowded airport but still the management here works very fast we didn't have to stand in line for a long time.

Landed in SR22T G6

Very bumpy surface, I’d say its β€œiffy” for a Cirrus with wheel pants. Incredible spot, short walk to wonderful beach, tie downs and picnic tables on site. Need to sign a waiver and agreement with the operator before landing.

FAA oddity - a CA coded airport in Nevada

Per Airnav:

Sectional chart: (AIRPORT IS 10 MILES INTO NEVADA. THE CLOSEST ASSC CITY IS BISHOP, CA - AND IS CORRECTLY CHARTED ON SAN FRANCISCO SECTIONAL.)

Since it's not actually in California, I have corrected the data to reflect that it is indeed closer to Dyer, Nevada.

Hello! How to download these georeferenced satellite images?

Picture of animebirder

Corrected.

It only took a decade ... but yeah, we're all good here now.

Picture of wolfgangx

Good gas stop

Must have been an old military base. Massive runway. ForeFlight said fair condition but I would say it was good
