Properly "Modimolle Airfield"
Officially, this should be "Modimolle Airfield", but according to Wikipedia and other sources, most people still refer to the town (and the airport) by its former name, Nylstroom.
Operated by the East Rand Flying Club
The East Rand Flying Club operates Springs Airfield, and they hold a fly-in breakfast every summer. Here's a thread on this year's:

Disputed island
Europa Island, in the Madagascar Strait, currently has no permanent inhabitants. France has de-facto control of the island, and manages the airstrip and NDB, but Madagascar also claims ownership.
Go for a walk
Its a great airport to fly to if you want to walk into town, take a look around, and have a coffee. Unique little town in the middle of southern sk. http://www.atouchofeurope.net
federal $ coming
Just announced - a new row of hangars are getting built.
pleasant parking spot
Victor's crew is always warm & friendly to fly-in visitors, despite the fuel issue.
Landing permission
It is not permitted to use Rena for civil air traffic except in emergencies.
Pilot Controlled Lights
Transmit on 123.5 for 5 seconds. Lights turn off after 12 minutes.
What we found there.
Its a great private grass strip on a ridge with good views. They have all natural vegetables in season and fruits like apples and pears. They have several square dances each summer. Their club is the Fly'N Squares and they do "fast track".
Spectacular approach!
The approach is an offset localizer with curved approach lights, down into a fjord. Interesting missed approach and departure procedure too. The scenery is unbelievably beautiful. Efficient service from the airport staff, reasonable Avgas price for Europe.
Information
Joint Civ/Mil airport. Civilian part is the small apron on west side of runway.
Currently served by Air Norway twice a day.
Watch for high, gusty winds near the rim of the canyon
I wanted to land here and hike to the lookout, but the winds were high and gusty at the canyon rim, so I limited myself to a touch&go and a flight along the rim of the canyon. I couldn't see a windsock after circling twice, so I suspect it was wrapped around the pole somewhere. The winds are always shifting along the canyon rim and I would recommend only landing early in the AM or at dusk, when it is calm and cooler.
Good overnight stop
I landed here at 8PM for fuel and a place to overnight. The FBO was closed, I could access the terminal but the TSA guy and the cleaners in the terminal had no idea where I could leave the aircraft. I tied down beside a Citation in front of the FBO, grabbed my stuff and used the terminal wifi to find a hotel. The Holiday Inn Express sent a car to pick me up. All of the local hotels advertised shuttle service and offer "corporate" pilot rates. The hotels and chain restaurants are all clustered in one section of town, I had no problems finding a restaurant that still served beer and a burger at 10PM. The hotel also provided a car to take me to the airport in the morning, something that a Holiday Inn Express doesn't normally do.
The next morning, the FBO staff were very friendly and quick. They moved my plane so the Citation could depart, but tied it down again just like I would do. I would go back there again if I return to explore the Snake River Canyon airstrips.
re: Ottawa's mystery airport
I can't find any info about this strip - is it still private or PPR? I have done low approaches numerous times, it seems there are some terrain gradient challenges at the East end of the strip. I'd be willing to take the Husky in for a visit and offer an unbiased opinion on the runway conditions.
Beautiful Place!
One of the nicest places to land and camp at. The approach is a little unorthodox, a curved base/final to stay clear of the terrain. If you drag it in, you might lose sight of the runway, but if you like to slip you can come in very steeply from the East side.
Lots of wildlife on and around the strip, deer wander through your campsite at all times of the day. The Ranger at the station is very helpful with ideas of where to hike, what to see. They are always ready for a visit, the historic ranger station is right at mid-field.
Don't go here to practice your touch & goes, you will just piss off the numerous hikers and campers who are in the protected wilderness area. And the Ranger takes note.
Good strip to practice on before going further afield
The Fly Montana guidebook describes this strip as a good place to practice on, the field is outside of the protected wilderness area and a road runs right alongside it. Practice your backcountry approaches and higher altitude takeoffs and landings here before venturing into the more pristine (and protected) backcountry strips.
Runway 26A = taxiway A
According to the Canada Flight Supplement (AIP), runway 26A is actually part of taxiway A, available for VMC day departures only, when runway 26L is active. Apparently, that means smaller aircraft are allowed to take off straight from the taxiway instead of waiting in line for the big runway. There's no corresponding 08A, but if the wind's almost always blowing in off the ocean on a VMC day, it wouldn't be that useful anyway.
re: SkyTrain Service
Reply to @YHZ: Great news! Now if only Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, etc. could follow suit and link their light rail to their main airports.
State Campground beside this airport, but no facilities
State campground on both sides and a road passes close by. Not as quiet as it looks; you can camp on the field but there are walking trails crisscrossing the runway between the campgrounds and a steady stream of mountain bikers cross the runway. Despite being a state campground, there are no facilities, no restaurants, no stores close by.
When I was there in Aug 2009, there was a Forest Service firefighting team with two helicopters and a fuel truck operating from the airstrip. Approach from the South, along the lake. Runway rises to the North, then ends abruptly. There was a Warrior in the overrun with wiped landing gear, he floated and touched down late, ground-looping just before the steep drop-off at the North end.
SkyTrain Service
As of August 17 2009, SkyTrain service now connects YVR with downtown Vancouver. Yay!
Inexpensive Fuel, basic facilities
Refueled here at the municipal self-serve pump (West end of the ramp). There are pumps at the FBO on the East end of the ramp but their avgas was much more expensive. Aug 2009.
Although it does not look like there are any other facilities, there is a curious blue Quonsot-style structure outside the fence that is actually the airport manager's office. There is a toilet, phone and internet in his building. He also has wifi that you can access.
Airline service
According to Wikipedia this strip is served by Yakutia- and Polar Airlines

re: cameroon scam! 3 english bulldog pups
the same thing happened to me except the bulldog puppy was free and i would only have to pay 110 for the shipping and 40 for the food. they messed up a bit though... they provided pictures at the bottom of their email that let me know how the puppy would be delievered... unfortunatly for them, the pictures had a website located on the dogs' coats they were being delievered in, the affiliation with the airline was non existent. it didnt take me long to figure out that it was a scam. who claims that they own a business and it actually exists without having a website for it and providing fake pictures and not to mention they called me like 12 times one right after the other. come on some people are just ridiculously stupid.
re: Closed?
Several signs...Look close and you'll see markings on the asphalt on the west side near the yellow boxes. There is a fence/wall covering most of the old runway. And it appears they have made a go cart track on the old apron.

Abandoned
According to Wikipedia it is abandoned
Subic Bay International Airport
I hope they will allow international commercial flights in SBIA. After the FEDEX departure just wondering what does SBMA plan to do with the airport. Hoping commercial flights to liven up the area and to attract tourism.

According to Wikipedia article linked this AB has been closed for many years.

re: re: Avgas in drums
Reply to @david: I read a couple of books by a Minnesota dentist who liked to take his Super Cub for trips around the Canadian North - it sounded like he often had to arrange for drums at places he was planning to stop, and he'd take the excess on board as baggage. Then he'd fly for a while, find a likely lake to drop into (he was on straight floats) and then transfer the fuel from the bags in the baggage compartment to the fuel tanks.
re: Avgas in drums
Thanks. It sounds like the Quebec side of James Bay and Hudson Bay is a better bet than the Ontario/Manitoba/NWT side -- I can't find any avgas between Moosonee and Churchill, except for maybe buying drums.
re: Avgas in drums
Reply to @david: drums are 205 litres/45 CDN gallons/54 US gallons.
re: Closed
English Wikipedia. Search for Chaykovsky and pick the one in Perm Krai
re: Closed
I couldn't find the article in the English Wikipedia -- is it in the Russian one?
re: Closed
Thanks for the info. If anyone finds out the status, please let us know.
re: Closed
Reply to @david: Was supposed to be a question mark after Closed in title. Don't know if it is completely closed, but it is no longer used for any mil- or private regular flights.
re: Closed
Is the runway ever used (say, to fly in new aircraft for display), or is it completely shut down?
Closed
According to Wikipedia article about Chaykovsky there is no longer an airport there.
Closed
This is now used for the Central Air Force Museum
Wake Island

Airport or helipad ?
π Tue, 01 Sep 2009
β @Zoran at Westmead Hospital Helipad, Australia
It doesn't look like an airport. Perhaps it's mean Westmead Hospital helipad (33.8052 S, 150.9892 E) ?
