re: SBIA

I have been checking Subic Bay websites for weeks. I can't find a travel agent to arrange the entire trip. The SBIC website doesn't give any information on airlines or flights.

Ride with Ed in 1954 (Tri_Pacer)

I'll keep it short, me and friend Garry Flipped a coin for the right seat on a ride, garry won and as we were flying gracious Ed asked if he knew something about flying, He said yes and Ed said take over and Garry gripped the control wheel then Ed asked for a turn and Garry quickly performed a split-S (which would have made an SBD pilot envious) and had me viewing the Totowa Drive-In parking lot thru the windscreen. Ed calmly cut the throttle and very gently recovered to straight and level. Cigar smoking Ed never lost it and just verbally said thats not how you do it.

Just a little 50s aviation trivia involving some past events. Garry went on to get his license many years later, and a 172.

re: US military airport

The Wikipedia article suggests that private civilian flights are allowed, but I'm in Canada, and too far away to test that myself.

Picture of

US military airport

Huge airport for a rather poor region in Paraguay. Big radar station, aparently not in use anymore. Very old equipment inside. Barnstead Puromatic for water purity measurements??? Why do you need that on a lost airport, unless it was planned to be used for something else. 3800meters long and 60meters wide indicates that it can be used for large mililtary planes. Funded by the US in the early 80s for purpose of regional domination, like they do in so many other countries. Currently being guarded by paraguayan military, so it's kinda hard to get on to.

Shymkent airport

Passengers are delivered by bus to their aircraft. Shymkent can be reached by Air Astana via Almaty.

June 2009 Visit - Oxford (Kidlington Airport)

Popped in using free landing voucher (Pilot Magazine). Very well equipped IFR airfield - ILS/NDB, 1552m of runway and a very smart GA terminal. Small Costa Coffee bar and another restaurant within the Oxford pilot training school. Helpful operations staff and reception who got us a taxi and gave us a guide to the city.

Normal fees for a light piston (under 2.73 tonnes) is only Β£15+VAT weekdays or Β£10 including VAT at weekends, or free if you uplift 45 litres of Avgas.

Service - 5/5, Food - 3/5, Facilities - 5/5, Runway and Nav Aids - 4/5 (no radar other than BZN), Costs - 4/5

One of the better airports in the UK

re: Talkeetna Airport Noise Pollution and Invation of Privac

Talkeetna airport opened in 1949. Unless you're over 60 years old, the airport got there before you did.

Picture of

Talkeetna Airport Noise Pollution and Invation of Privacy

The Talkeetna Airport and the massive amount of summer tourist flights (mostly going to Denali) is a major contributor to noise pollution and invasion of privacy in the small town of Talkeetna and the surrounding area. The local residents who live here all year and don't make money off tourism should have the right to enjoy their summers also without having to wear ear plugs just to get some piece and quiet. The small planes constantly going over our homes sometimes too low is also an invasion of our privacy and a major annoyance. The only locals who are for tourism are the ones making money off them. Tourism has ruined Talkeetna it has become a town of tourist whores.

Floatplane fuel available here

The lake just east of the runway makes it possible to land a floatplane here to refuel. The airport operator has a 400 litre tank on a cart that they bring to the shore.

Picture of philippe

Fuel available here

Bought fuel here recently from the friendly folks at Lakeland Airways. A pleasant stop, very reasonable fuel prices, and the dock is right in the middle of the town.

Picture of philippe

Updated: fuel very expensive

A recent visit showed that they hiked the price of their avgas to an unreasonable 2.50 - more than twice the rate at my home base. Given that this base is not all the way into the boonies, this is rather excessive.

re: Free yorkie puppy.

With regards to my last posting.....I am very nervous to the fact that I gave my address. Did anyone else give that info? Thank You...California

Picture of

re: Free yorkie puppy.

Wow...This is amazing! I have been in search of a yorkie puppy and when I came across the free puppy advertisement on the internet I thought I had hit the jackpot! I had e-mailed an individual regarding the puppy; however, there were two puppies coming as a pair. Unfortunatly I gave out my name and address ( no phone number..Thank God!) thinking I was going to get the puppies this week. I had e-mailed the individual asking if the puppies would be ok to fly among other questions as to the ownership fee and such. I received a reply telling me not to be skeptical! RED FLAG! The e-mail continued on with sentences ending in OK (as I have seen in other postings) and it was very pushy as to me sending the money because the puppies were being packed up. When I received an address to send a money gram to a state and city I have never heard of, I was prompted to google such info. I am so very grateful that many individuals have posted their experiances with this puppy scam. I honestly feel that it is the same people continuing on with this scam. Again, THANK YOU!....California

re: Rochefort ???

Thanks - that must have been in the original data source. I've corrected it, based on the French Wikipedia article.

Rochefort ???

Err. No. Nowhere near Rochefort, which is in the South of France, typo there methinks.

Another one of their acquisitions. They tried closing it...like Sheffield (SCA). This time their local Council refused!

re: Berz Macomb Airport

I used to fly into Berz occasionally when I lived in Troy. In fact, I bought my first airplane there. My partner took flying lessons there and he happened to see a for sale sign in the window of a Piper Arrow just at the time we were looking. Sorry to see another nice GA airport gone in favor of urban sprawl and more sorry to hear of Milt's passing. He was a true friend of aviation.

re: FBO and airport fees

Reply to @david: I was there today and once again I had to pay a $150.00 ramp fee, and what did I get for it? NOTHING!!! The TV never works and now they do not have a crew car. I asked them twice and thought maybe someone would offer us a ride but they told us twice that we could walk to the stripmall. Unless I absolutely have to go to KCXY I will go to KMDT!!!

re: Kingston's first airport, 1929-1942

Two more factoids about the Kingston Airfield:

Until 1931, the Kingston Airfield was also a regular stop-over point for airmail flights between Toronto and Montreal.

Billy Bishop (Canada's most famous World War I flying ace) was a frequent visitor and honorary member.

Picture of david

Kingston's first airport, 1929-1942

This was the (approximate) location of the Kingston Flying Club's original 1,200 ft grass strip, in what is now the Kingscourt subdivision, with St. Mary's Cemetary on the airstrip's its eastern boundary. The club lost its license after a crash in 1942. After World War II, the club resumed operations and moved to the newly-built military airfield that is now Norman Rogers Airport (CYGK).

YHOX IS CLOSED

Closed and sold for industrial land 2008. So ends the history of a useful WW2 vintage airport. Sad to think that the Commonwealth Government sold all three Sydney GA airports to the same greedy organisation.

re: What is it actually called?

This airport is called "Denali Airport", but it's private. I suspect you're looking for the nearby "McKinley National Park Airport" (PAIN) that belongs to the Park Service:

Trans Canada Airlines at YYP

In 1947, the Dept of Transport had taken over the operation of the Pennfield Airport, as the RCAF moved out. TCA realized that this airport, on a main highway from Saint John would serve the city much better than the long dirt roads up to Blissville and on Apr 1 1947 , Blissville was closed and the Pennfield Ridge Airport (YYP) was opened for scheduled service with all DC3 service.

A new route from Halifax/Yarmouth/Saint John/Boston also began on Apr 1 1947 and the Halifax Montreal flight now stopped in Pennfield . By 1951, Pennfield would see up to 10 flights a day through the Airport, including the transborder flights to/from Boston.

With the opening of the new airport in Saint John (YSJ), TCA moved its operation over there on Dec 31/51
