Trans Canada Airlines at YYP

In 1947, the Dept of Transport had taken over the operation of the Pennfield Airport, as the RCAF moved out. TCA realized that this airport, on a main highway from Saint John would serve the city much better than the long dirt roads up to Blissville and on Apr 1 1947 , Blissville was closed and the Pennfield Ridge Airport (YYP) was opened for scheduled service with all DC3 service.

A new route from Halifax/Yarmouth/Saint John/Boston also began on Apr 1 1947 and the Halifax Montreal flight now stopped in Pennfield . By 1951, Pennfield would see up to 10 flights a day through the Airport, including the transborder flights to/from Boston.

With the opening of the new airport in Saint John (YSJ), TCA moved its operation over there on Dec 31/51

re: Best aeroclub around.

Bloody narrow strip though, makes it a bit harder to judge your approach than average. Otherwise, good facilities and nice people.

re: Don't depart IFR on a VFR day!

Normally, a control tower will put your IFR clearance on request with center, then clear you to taxi to the active while they're waiting for the clearance to arrive for them to relay to you.

Picture of ptomblin

re: Don't depart IFR on a VFR day!

In my case, I taxied without the IFR clearance because that was what I was instructed to do when I called for a clearance.

Picture of

re: Don't depart IFR on a VFR day!

Reply to @david: I don't understand this. Why would you begin to taxi before getting your clearance. Just wondering

It's in the FAA data, so it's not very classified.

Learning to fly at Sudbury Aviation - 1967.

I learned to fly at Sudbury Aviation during the summer of 1967. At the time I was sixteen years of age. The air service had five Fleet 80s (Fleet Canucks) Some of the registrations that I remember are CF-DYX, CF-HOU, & Cf-ENQ. My father, Doug Calver, was a forestry pilot at the time (MNR) based at Parry Sound. We had just moved from Chapleau that spring. My log book says that I soloed with five hours and 40 minutes. It says that it was the Chief Pilot, Charlie Armstrong who was my instructor on that flight. It was also he who took me on my final fight test for the flight part of the license requirements. We were taking off out of Whitewater Lake and there was a thud, and the engine started to run roughly. I just put it back on the water and we coasted to a stop with the engine running at about 1700 RPM. We shut the engine off and Charlie got out onto the float and opened the cowling. He looked the engine over and commented that the crankcase was cracked. He spun the prop and the engine restarted. We headed back to the dock. We completed the balance of the flight test later in the day in another airplane. He was killed a few years later in a crash in a Cessna 180 (CF-MEO) during the winter time.

Since that time I have had the pleasure of flying with my father, and my brother who learned to fly in Parry Sound at Georgian Bay Airways in 1969. We have had the privilege of owning three different types of airplanes: 1961 Piper Comanche 180, 1975 Beech F33A (gorgeous!!!) and a 1976 Cessna Skyhawk 180. They are all gone now. Wasn't flying them enough because of secular commitments and now who can really afford it anyway! But I have many pleasant memories to recall. My father is now 84 years of age and still in good health. If I still had any one of these airplanes, I'd still give him the left seat.

Thanks for listening,

Dave Calver

Now in North Carolina

Magnificent Airfield near Cape Town

This is probably one of the most beautiful airfields in the world with a great club.

Surrounded by vineyards with magestic mountains and the Indian Ocean as back drops.

No better place to sit after an afternoon flight and enjoy a cold beer or to have a breakfast outside the clubhouse after a morning flip.

maltese puppy named Daisy

The lady put an ad on craigslist in Dallas But she's in Cameroon and can't keep the puppy All I needed to do was western union money of 90.00 dollars for a new crate to have her shipped in. when they got the money they would mail me time she would arrive but wouldn't tell me what airlines she would be shipped on. I won't send the money as much as I would love the puppy I think its a scam. The lady was supposing as a doctor . if she was she would have known etter than to take a puppy into the country to begin with.

First Flight Airport

You won't see the runway until on final, but the Wright Memorial is easy to see and about 300 yd east of the runway.

Rolling out on 2 or 20 you are about 500ft from where it all began in December 1903. Every pilot should land here. A literally awesome place.

Jersey Aeroclub

The Jersey Aeroclub is handling the GA-traffic. And they're doing a superb job. What lovely people and so helpful. Just park your craft for an overnight stay, go in and meet the folks. For briefing facilities they're well-equipped. After filling in the customs forms, they're willing to help you to find a hotel and call for a taxi.

re: Have been there.

The nearest airport I know with airline service is Loakan Airport (BAG RPUB), about 70 km to the west-southwest, but you might be able to charter a small plane from there the rest of the way in.

re: Heath Canyon Airport

Reply to @misterbick: The FAA still marks it as open.

Heath Canyon Airport

In the late 1970s I made several trips to Heath Canyon Airport carrying flourspar miners to and from their work It was not a landing strip for the faint of heart and I would not advise anyone to attempt to land there without some dual with a pilot experienced with the runway. It is a one way runway which lands to he northwest and departs to the southeast. The approach is over a bluff (which can be seen in the picture) that is about 300' high and about two miles southeast of the runway and you are landing on a runway that, though paved, is very narrow. About 500 feet after touch down the runway climbs a hill and then stays level for about 800' before climbing another hill. It is best to touch down shortly after the threshold. There is nearly always a strong crosswind from the west. Once over the bluff you are committed to land as the runway ends against another high bluff which would make any attempt at a go around nearly impossible. Takeoffs should be done from the northwest threshold. I found that, in a Cessna 210 I was not at VR before the first "roller coaster" hill and I had to hold forward pressure so as not to be thrown into the air before the plane was ready to fly and then make a sort of "ski jump" off the second hill. Sometimes I could climb straight out but not usually.

However, this is all moot as I notice that the 2009 DigitalGlobe picture shows X's on the runway. This is just as well as Somebody might be tempted to land there and it really is a dangerous strip.

re: ATIS, communication with CT

Thanks for the info....it's not that I was in a hurry, I was in the plane on the ramp getting ready to taxi. and later inbound for landing. Kind of tough to see the phone# on the gate from either location. ;-) Good to know where I can find it though. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

re: ATIS, communication with CT
