"United States Ballistic Missile Defense Site at Deveselu Air Base in Romania"

Fact Sheet

Bureau of Arms Control, Verification and Compliance

May 3, 2011

"The United States and Romania jointly selected the Deveselu Air Base near Caracal, Romania, to host a U.S. Ballistic Missile Defense System which employs the SM-3 interceptor (also referred to as the β€œAegis Ashore System”). The deployment to Romania is anticipated to occur in the 2015 timeframe as part of the second phase of the European Phased Adaptive Approach (EPAA) – the U.S. national contribution to a NATO missile defense architecture.

The EPAA will provide protection of NATO European territories and populations, and augment protection of the United States, against the increasing threats posed by the proliferation of ballistic missiles from the Middle East. At the November 2010 NATO Summit, the Alliance welcomed the EPAA as a U.S. national contribution to the NATO missile defense capability."

Romania Air Base to Host U.S. Missile Shield

AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

Published: 3 May 2011 18:50

"DEVESELU, Romania - Bucharest said May 3 that U.S. missile interceptors would be deployed in southern Romania, a key link in Europe for a defense shield, prompting Moscow to ask for "safeguards" from Washington.

Romania and the United States have been negotiating for more than a year about the deployment of ballistic missile interceptors, which should be operational by 2015.

"We have decided that the anti-missile shield will be deployed at the former airbase at Deveselu," Romanian President Traian Basescu said in a televised address.

Moscow, which fears the shield could be turned against Russia, swiftly demanded assurances from Washington."

Brand New OLD Airport

I think Kyiv did a crummy job on the airport remodel. It is like you have a "brand new" "OLD" airport. What is this deal with buses to airplanes, rain, snow, sleet, hail, etc?

There are so few seats around that it is pitiful. Having generic checkin-counters may seem like a good idea, but is worthless if you are trying to find a specific flight/airline, for example, to just check your bag a little early.

The only good thing I can see is the international departure area, more chairs, and a few resturants that charge in Grivinuias, which are cheap.

Overall, I would only give KBP a 2 or 3 out of 10. It is pitiful compared to Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, Paris, Minneapolis, and so on.

Beja airport

So happy Beja airport is open. Not so happy that the only flight at the moment is from Heathrow as I live in Wales and fly from Birmingham. Never mind I am sure that when people visit the beautiful Alentejo there will be more demand.I have been visiting about 6 times a year for the last 3 years and flying to Beja would be brill.

Leavesden Aerodrome

I grew up yards from the end of the runway! Fabulous place to grow up. We spent hours as kids with our noses pressed against the fence, watching the comings and goings of the learner pilots, executive jets, helicopters and airships!! Barry Bowles once used it to test his fast car - and we were there watching! We lived a few doors away from Rolls Royce's Press Officer and he let us in. I still remember everything shaking as Concorde did a flypast at an airshow in 1986 - simply amazing and still one of my favourite planes.

From memory - a potted history. It used to be the King George V playing fields, gifted to the people of Watford by the Crown. The land was requisitioned during the First World War and turned into an airfield. The land was then 'given' to Rolls Royce who sold it off in 1994 for profit when they closed down their Small Engine Division and moved production elswhere. The local folk fought the two Councils involved (Three Rivers and Watford Borough) to stop the land sale from going through but were unsuccessful. The deed from the original gifting from the Crown had mysteriously disappeared from County Hall and so ownership of the land couldn't be proved. Very sad.

I no longer live in Leavesden but I still expect to see aircraft landing when I come up Courtlands Drive to get to my parents' house.

Poor runway condition (rwy 16) in 2010

I landed in ODS in May 2010 on board a LOT E75 coming in from Warsaw. We used runway 16 which was in relatively poor condition, with lots of summarily repaired cracks.

I saw a few parked (for maintenance ?) aircraft including Yak-42 UR-CER in Fars Air Qeshm (Iran) color scheme.

The terminal building was outdated and not sized to handle significant traffic.

an experience

I too managed to land here from Gatwick, with hours of delay in the middle of the night on an old AirBus 319 shaking rattling quivering scarry but alive

First time to visit here.

I had no trouble landing and departing Sovde. The grass strip was in good condition and plenty of room for my Cessna 310. Man named Jan came to see what was my trouble, and he was very nice. We enjoyed the 45 minutes we spent talking to him. I will visit there again on my next vacation to Europe.

re: Remaining runway

It looks like the foundations for the approach light system to me.

Picture of

Remaining runway

In the satellite image, there is a small section of runway remaining at the eastern edge of the development, beyond this there appears to be shadows which at first glance look like a continuation of the central markers, any ideas what this is? (zoom right in)

Reply to @trozanov:

Shame the custom officers behave like they must rob every traveller, creating their own rules as they go.

Picture of

Avoid this place!

The most disorganized & chaotic place I ever came across! The custom officers believe they have God given right to create their own rules & simply rob the travellers by using their official position. A lot of disrespect & shoking behaviour, especially from teenage custom officers- Forostovez & Gerasimov on the international departures. What a way to present the country! Shame on you!!!
