re: Civilian carriers V Military aircraft

You refer to the DC-10 as an old airframe, and yet you prefer the VC-10, which first flew nearly 50 years ago? I'm willing to bet the DC-10 is *way* more fuel efficient and cheaper to operate. Probably safer too. And according to Wikipedia, the only flying VC-10s are tankers - the rest are there for spare parts.

Wikipedia also says that some of the Tristars passenger/tanker combos, and some of the passenger Tristars have counter measures against ground fire so they are used to fly people into possibly hostile places like Iraq and Afghanistan. So it's not that they don't use the Tristars, just that they don't waste them on moving people around in safe airspaces.

Civilian carriers V Military aircraft

Why do we use Civilian carriers (normally the cheapest bidder, like the recently bust 'Fly Globespan', or the oldest airframes, like Omni Air's DC-10s) when the sides of the runway at Brize are lined with RAF VC-10s and Tristars? What is the point having RAF passenger aircraft if we don't use them regularly?

Bystrzyca Klodzka Airfield & Junkers Ju-390 in 1945

This airfield interestingly appears to be the airfield from which the almost mythical Nazi Bell was flown by Junkers Ju-390 to Bodo, Norway about 17/18 April 1945. SS Lt Gen Sporrenberg and SS Hauptsturm Rudolf Schuster both gave depositions after WW2 saying the aircraft departed from an airfield at Klodzko, or west of Opole.

New

I was travelling via Moscow to Gelendhzik and discover a very brand new, but also very small airport - somehow funny - with no luggage belt. When I left, one aircraft to St. Petersburg was delayed and due to this, the "terminal" completely overcrowded...I liked it. reisen.cc

re: WX

Reply to @Chally: Thanks for the information. All the TAF and METAR information on OurAirports currently comes from a free US government source -- it's complete for Canada, the US, and Western Europe, as far as I can tell, but likely misses some reports from smaller stations elsewhere.

Be aware that the coordinates indicated in the approach plates are wrong by about 300ft.

This is still an oddment from the cold war times.

Bergerac was 'fogged in', this was our alternate. Big field but very quite. Twr spoke English and was very helpful. Landing fee less than 4 Euros. Friendly aero club made a coffee for us!

Summer 2010 visit

Rented acft from Sue Virr from the Aero club de Limoges. http://www.nearlyheaven.com/.

Friendly field, very helpful tower, only the odd delay to account for inbound IFR traffic (Ryanair etc) otherwise a great base for touring.

Summer 2010 visit

Small field on UNICOM 123.50 so French calls here the norm (although we made ours in English). Landing fees are a 'donation' into the piggy bank in the flying club reception. Great little restaurant round the corner (20m) L'Escale Guillaumet.

Summer 2010 visit

Great location, easy nav and comms, arrived from the North (Limoges) and bought in via the published VRPs.

Landing fees less than 4 Euros!! I'm moving to France. Easy access to the apron via the Aeroclub de Bergerac so no faffing with security etc. Good cafe/restaurant, coffee good.

Thank you very much - I've updated the position.

My time at Spangdahlem Air Base

I was stationed at Spangdahlem Air Base from February,1971 thru November,1973 and I would appreciate having a history of the base from that time frame . If anyone can help me with my request I certainly would appreciate your help . In addition to bringing back memories of my time spent at Spangdahlem Air Base I hope to be able to get in touch with the other Airmen that I was stationed with for a reunion . Thank You kpshedd@comcast.net
