The lost villages

To the east of here, along the St Lawrence River, you can see the old Highway 2, several sideroads, and even some village street grids and lots under the water. They were submerged with the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1959, and flying over them is still an interesting (and creepy) experience.

Procedures: summer glider ops for air cadets

[copied from Facebook]

The Air Cadets Gliding Operations have commenced for the Fall season at Smiths Falls flying Club on weekends.

When Air Cadet Glider Ops are in progress there is no inactive side of the circuit. Gliders and Tow Planes do right hand circuits and use both the main and grass Runway. The Glider β€œzone” extends up to 3,000 ft on the β€œinactive” side.

Joining the circuit from inactive side should be avoided, coordinate with Glider Ops on 122.7 if unsure. Joining the circuit straight into downwind is highly recommended.

Gillam Aviation Fuel

Avgas and Jet fuel are both offered at YGX, better prices than Thompson or Churchill with 24/7 service. As for the comment above, I purchased the company October 1, 2018 and avgas does not require 24 hour notice, but any notice with an accurate time is always appreciated!

2019 - rapidly becoming unlandable

Surface is in good shape, trees are colonizing in from the edges. High wing planes may be ok for a while, low wing gliders are marginal.

Picture of Fitchett

Long gone

What remains of strip has been dug up for gravel pit.

Picture of Fitchett

Long gone

Not even possible to identify where the strip was. The coal mine likely went through here years ago.

Picture of Fitchett

Totally unlandable

Strip is long gone in the trees

Well maintained as of 2019

Kept mowed by local flying club.

Picture of Fitchett

Much worse than it looks by satellite

Severely overgrown; anywhere that isn't pavement is growing tall trees.

Well maintained

Kept up by the Red Deer Flying Club.

Construction

Major construction project underway as of 2019. New terminal building going in at mid-field, north side of runway. Will be very nice when completed. Currently the activity has minimal impact on airfield operations.

Don't

Just don't. They're throwing everyone out. It will probably close.

Noise abuse

The constant flying over Sutton must stop, very loud aircraft and it all day long.

I am contacting T/C and lodging a complaint!

re: NDB CCY 375 SHUTDOWN

Yes, one of my hobbies is listening/logging these NDBs (yes, weird) and it is almost daily NDBs are going off the air. The other NDB at this airport, IY 417 has been having technical troubles since February 2019. I think it is off air now or has a very weak signal. Also it was logged in Finland Jan 2017 - 4374mi/7039km.

Another problem is spammers leaving loooong boring off topic diatribes on this site.

Thanks for the info!

Stop flying over the homes in Sutton

There is one plane that continually flies over the homes in Sutton. Please stop, you are a complete nuisance.

Thumbs up

Really great airport, the expansions and renovations make it sleek and easy to get around.

UP train to downtown is great

When I was stranded here for 30 hours after a missed connection (see my previous comment), I was about to look for an airport hotel, when I remembered that it's just as fast and easy to get downtown now that the UP Train is running. I remember when downtown was an hour++ and a $75 taxi ride; now its a few bucks and a 25-minute ride on a train that runs every 15 minutes. You'd be insane to stay at the crappy airport hotels these days; you'd probably spend more time waiting for their shuttle than just riding the UP Train to civilisation.

Don't transfer here

This is a great airport for people living in/near the GTA, but it's an awful one for connections, because when it shuts down for a thunderstorm (etc), it takes hours to recover. I was connecting from Ottawa to Copenhagen, sat for a 3-hour ground hold in Ottawa, missed my connection in Toronto, stood in line for 2 hours waiting for the chronically-understaffed (and ironically-named) Air Canada courtesy counter, and had to fight hard to avoid being moved to a flight 48 hours later. When things go wrong at YYZ, they go wrong badly, and it takes the airport a long time to recover.

Nice brunch

I flew myself to CYRQ on Father's Day. It's still a nice, friendly airport. The staff don't mind you parking (for free) even if you're not buying fuel. The restaurant had a great Sunday brunch and a big crowd.

I did manage to generate my first CADORS report on my way home, when I had a full avionics-stack failure in IMC and had to follow lost-comms procedures into Ottawa Terminal airspace: https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/2/cadors-screaq/rd.aspx?cno%3d2019O1489%26dtef%3d%26dtet%3d2019-06-18%26otp%3d-1%26ftop%3d%253e%253d%26ftno%3d0%26ijop%3d%253e%253d%26ijno%3d0%26olc%3d%26prv%3d-1%26rgn%3d-1%26tsbno%3d%26tsbi%3d-1%26arno%3d%26ocatno%3d%26ocatop%3d1%26oevtno%3d%26oevtop%3d1%26evtacoc%3d3%26fltno%3d%26fltr%3d-1%26cars%3d-1%26acat%3d-1%26nar%3d%26aiddl%3d-1%26aidxt%3d%26optdl%3d-1%26optcomt%3d%26optseq%3d%26optxt%3d%26opdlxt%3dResults%2bwill%2bappear%2bin%2bthis%2blist%26mkdl%3d-1%26mkxt%3d%26mdldl%3d-1%26mdlxt%3d%26cmkdl%3dC%26cmkxt%3d%26rt%3dQR%26hypl%3dy%26cnum%3d2019O1489

No drinking water, but very nice

I visited again earlier this month, after nearly 10 years. There's a drinking water spout that's shut down, and a picnic table courtesy of the Cornwall Flying Club. It's still one of my favourite little airports to visit (so quiet). I put some photos here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B0MUsUKAbWL/

re: NDB CCY 375 SHUTDOWN

Thanks. We're probably going to be removing the navaid information soon, because it's too hard to keep up to date with VORs and NDBs being decommissioned so fast. I'll miss them.

The Phoenix from the ashes

I'm glad to see that CNZ8 Grimsby has a new lease on life!

Since the new owners have taken over, there are many improvements and more to come!

The airport is clean and functional. The new airport manager, Gary, is delightful and accommodating.New tenants are rushing in with the knowledge that this is going to be the new area airport, after Stoney Creek CPF6 deciding to go the Storage Facility direction.

flew in today

I really enjoyed flying into Grimsby Air Park today. I called up on the telephone prior to arriving no answer, left no voice mail however a kind gentlemen called me back. Told him my intentions and he was more than accommodating. Nobody was around but the place was neat and orderly. I was able to use the washroom and I felt the runway was in good shape considering I'm sure it gets very little funding if any. As Ontario Municipalities who have airports squeeze the life out of GA, it's a treat to land at an airport like Grimsby. Bravo.

Hi beautiful location,

I flew in a fire pit ring and grill. If no one minds it can stay there. This was my first time here. Nice quite.

Thank you YUL

The process for clearing customs and proceeding to a domestic flight was fantastic. Our US flight was delayed 45 min making the connection really tight and staff were at the customs area waiting to assist us. It was straight forward and quick - far better than connecting through YYZ.

nice long/wide rwy (14/32)

Several planes in/out the day we visited, but good comms.

Rwy 14/32 has at least one taxiway bypass (south side) which helped us since we were taxiing from while another plane was taxiing to the rwy.

Two windsocks disagreed when we were leaving: one indicated rwy 21, the other indicated rwy 14 (unless the wind changed between when we started our taxi and when we got closer). It's pretty close to the coast so not unlikely winds shifted.

$20 landing fee is waived with a minimum fuel purchase (not sure how much). Trainer aircraft land with no fee but not sure if that still applies if you visit the FBO and/or park.

Espanola West soon to be in CFS

The airport has always had slways had active flyers since the 50s. Application is being made to get it back in the data base for safety reasons and to promote it. Soon to be in CFS.
