re: Downsview Park shuts down Toronto`s Canadian Air & Space

Reply to @prattsoplenty: I'm very sad about this. I went to the museum last year, and was amazed to find it was in the same building where I'd been in the Air Cadets in the mid 1970s (188 Squadron). It's a great little museum - obviously underfunded, but a real labour of love.

Downsview Park shuts down Toronto`s Canadian Air & Space Mus

Toronto -- September 24, 2011 -- Toronto's Canadian Air & Space Museum has received notice from its landlord Parc Downsview Park that the Park will be locking the doors today and closing the Museum to regular business.

The Park, a branch of the federal government, has control over the Museum's access after changing the locks following Tuesday's original eviction notice. This threatens to bring a sudden and disappointing close to the Canadian Air & Space Museum's 13-year operation of providing the public an opportunity to experience Canadian history.

Great Yuppy type town

Very nice small airport. Close easy walk to town. Nice shops and restaurants. Try the restaurant down by the ferry dock, my daughter says its great.

Picture of PilotBobSenior

Grass

My first grass strip landing! Bumpy but I enjoyed it so much, I did it three more times! Nothing here but grass. You should get permission before you land.

Picture of PilotBobSenior

Decent

Decent small airport. No services on field. Great place to land and camp. State park is down the hill on the North end of field. Call Tiffany's Resort (about six miles around the lake). They will come get you. They have cabins and boats. Great fishing dock, nice trout, I have fished here for years. They also run the resort in the winter months for hunters. http://tiffanysresort.com/

Picture of PilotBobSenior

Stop here if your engine is about to fall off

I stopped, I looked and I left. Interesting approach to the field is the most exciting thing about Tonasket airport. Long ways to town.

Picture of PilotBobSenior

3 miles to town

Three mile bike ride to town. Long steep hill just outside of town. Not much here.

Picture of PilotBobSenior

Nice

Great college town, to far to walk. Great FBO on field.

Picture of PilotBobSenior

Great airport

Very pleasant people here. Small air carrier on field as well as a small air guard squadron of aging fighter jets. If you need a repair definitely call Ken Gooch 541-882-5856. This is his cell. The man is a master! Just ask anyone on the field, they all know him. Funny too! He saved my butt. I landed and the fan immediately quit turning. It took Ken about thirty seconds to locate my problem and less than an hour to get me back in the air.

Picture of PilotBobSenior

Quality

Very clean tidy airport. The pilots lounge is maintained wonderfully. There is even pop, goodies and cookies in the frig. Camp on the grass and walk on the beach. If the water level is low, don't let the mosquito's pack you off.

Picture of PilotBobSenior

Nice

A bit of a walk to town but a great small airport.

Picture of PilotBobSenior

I loved this town!

Great small airport. The pilot lounge is great. TV, couch, recliner microwave etc. Sleep here if you need to or borrow the ports bicycles and get some exercise on the short (1 mile) trip to town. Definitely eat at the Coyote Pass Cafe in town. I told the patron that her Starbucks quality mocha was way under priced and she told me she doesn't run the restaurant to make a killing she just loves to serve people. I believe it, the food was first class! Be sure to stop by the museum. The down home very pleasant ladies that run this place will happily and very pleasantly tell you a story about each of the museums artifacts. Be sure to ask them to darken the room with all the rocks and also be sure to check out the meteorite. I plan to return. I pitched a tent on the grass by the fair grounds and slept just fine. No fear in this wonderful small town.

Wind and Tuna

Watch the wind here, It blows often. Great strip, close to town (1 mile to center of town). Stop at Merino's Seafood in town and load up on the best canned tuna you will ever eat. You will never eat a can of Chicken of the Sea again! www.merinoseafoods.com Small family owned business. They use only pole caught tuna. You won't be disappointed! I fly there once a year to just for their canned tuna.

Picture of PilotBobSenior

Decent grass strip

Watch for the "marked" power lines at the North end of field. Not an issue, just be aware. Need permission from a property owner to land. Just land and ask, that's what I did. :)

Picture of

airport

looks good can i buy it

Picture of PilotBobSenior

Decent grass strip.

Supposedly need permission to land but all the numbers associated with this field have been disconnected. Land and ask an owner on the field, I'm sure you won't have a problem. No near by towns.

Picture of PilotBobSenior

Condition

The airport that got left behind. I landed here back in 1979 and I believe nothing has been repaired since. The runway surface then was great! Today its a crumbling poor example of a runway. Very sad.

Picture of PilotBobSenior

Great field

Slept the night here (in my plane). No close hotels but one of the best airport cafe's you could ever ask for. Small in a hanger pilot shop with great people. A real down home feel to the place. Stop and relax over a great meal at the Tail Dragger Restaurant.

Picture of PilotBobSenior

Food

Food and hotels within walking distance. I saw no active business on the field other than a card lock fuel station.

Picture of PilotBobSenior

In the middle of nowhere.

No amenities. Great touch and go light mountain practice.

Picture of PilotBobSenior

First class country type service

KDLS is one of those out of the way "Gem" airports. No real close amenities but the airport has a couple "free use" courtesy cars. Fill her up of course when done and show basic respect for the property. They will toss you the keys, no paper work not even Id just plain old country courtesy. Short drive to town for all your needs. I recommend the Country Cousins Hotel / Motel for a nights sleep. Be sure to eat at the Cousins restaurant, show up hungry. Big Jim's restaurant for a burger. When I was there the line was out the door so everyone in town likes the place too. I'm not one to frequent the Corporate places but you will find all those in town too.

Fly the Gorge, its beautiful. Watch for power lines and stay on your side of the road if flying low altitude. If flying under low clouds, when you reach the narrow part, fly to the center until clear. This is not my personal experience however passed to me from a worker / flyer at the airport. Very bumpy in the gorge when the wind is up. (Sept 2011)

Evergreen Aviation Museum

The museum has been drastically updated over the past few years. If you were there say more than five years ago you won't recognize the place. Definitively worth a visit. After you land, either call the museum or ask the FBO for a shuttle ride. The walk to the museum is a short f or ten minutes but the 4 lane highway with a turn lane is busy and dangerous to cross. Cross at the light if you prefer to walk. I did, after the long flight from KBVS the walk was refreshing. Watch out for circling hawks at KMMV. There were a dozen or so the day I landed (September).

What made Bacolod-Silay Airport and "International"?

I am a resident abroad and when my company book a flight for me it all boils down to Manila Airport only or Termninal, 1, 2 or 3; but never Bacolod. Their reason is because Bacolod-Silay is not an international airport but a domestic airport only. Is Cathay pacific, Qatar, Emirates, Gulf Air, Lufthansa and other international carriers landed or departed Bacolod-Silay International Airport yet?

Number-1 in Lithuania !

Located in river Nemunas river park, previuosly - had one of the biggest glider factory (during soviet occupation time 1940-1990), which is still open, but little slow, very active gliders club (organised world gliding championship 2006, European gliding championship 2011).

Skydiving activities - daily, several hangars, friendly people, small pub, pool, sauna.

Several private organizations, providing glider/aircraft repair services.

New runway (600 meters, 04/22).

I'd like to be the first visitor, you're fairly close to us.

I'm looking for a home for my 1942 Taylorcraft - L - 2A

My qualifications: aircraft does not eat much, does not take up much space and is fairly quiet, is not very heavy - "will not leave deep ruts." It is in original trim.

Thanks,

My Dad's Legendary Takeoff from Flying Patch

I remember hearing stories of my Dad (Jerry Vaught) and Brother (Greg) piloting a large Cessna 195 aircraft safely in AND out of this tiny airfield. I just recently found the entry in my Dad's logbook. The aircraft was a beautiful 1952 Cessna 195 (N302GT) that my Dad owned at the time. By the way, Hallmark Ornaments used this exact aircraft as the model for their 2007 "Sky's The Limit" Christmas ornament, only they changed the N-Number to N302JB from a previous designation. Nevertheless, my Dad and Brother fondly remember the fateful day in Oct. of 1982 when they attended an Antique Airplane Association fly-in at Ozark's Flying Patch in the 275HP aircraft. Landing was fairly easy, but the takeoff was tense. People attending the fly-in asked my Dad how he was gonna pull off a 900 ft. grass strip takeoff in an aircraft that big. So when show time came, everyone lined up to watch what they thought would be a disastrous takeoff attempt. My Brother recalls helping my Dad push the aircraft's tail back to a small dirt road along a tree line, Dad doing a thorough engine check, putting on full flaps, holding the toe brakes tight, then winding the engine up to near takeoff RPM while my Brother helped Dad keep back pressure on the yoke to keep the tail down. (Sounds kinda like a Navy carrier takeoff doesn't it?) With a quick snap, Dad released the brakes and gave her full throttle. According to both my Dad and Brother they rolled off the end of the runway at the edge of the bluff and sunk down into the valley just moments before the wings really started to take lift leaving the landing gear a few close feet above the valley tree tops. Moments later as they circled around to buzz the tiny airfield to let everyone know their takeoff was successful, my Dad turned to my Brother and simply said: "Son, that was a close one."
