1985 (Maybe 1984) Visit

I spent a day or two here at the end of a month-long sovereignty patrol. We started at Lupin Mine site, Nunavut (65 degrees 29' 12.61"N, 110 degrees 21'1.33"W) in rubber boats (15-man rubber assault boats, for those with military experience) and made out way north along the Burnside River, up Bathurst Inlet to the top of the Kent Peninsula. From there we were supposed to lash our little boats together and motor across Dease Strait to Byron Bay, where we'd be extracted by C-130. Well, we got socked in by weather on the south side of the crossing point, and started running low on food and fuel. Luckily, the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker HMCCGS Camsel was in the area, lifted us on board by helicoper, and ferried us across to Byron Bay on Victoria Island. The staff at the DEW station there treated us well, and we were warm and dry - a welcome change from our 33 days on the water and tundra. When the Hurc came in to get us, the gravel strip was so soft (it was beginning of August) he couldn't stop for fear of sinking into the muskeg, so we did an engine-running onload (plane rolling at the time), tossed the loadies our gear and packed-up inflatable boats, scrambled in the back while he taxied down the runway to the end, turned around, and took off for home. Looking back, it was quite an adventure. If anyone else out there remembers "OP OPINGAK ODYSEY", drop me a line at chris.maclean@community.royalroads.ca

re: History Dog Creek Airport

Hi there...... stumbled across this forum and was reading with interest. You wouldn't be Earl Becker - would you ?

I lived on this airport as a kid - would have been in the early to mid 50's - there was about 8 to 10 families there at that time. My father was a radio operator there, and i went to school up to grade 3 in the 1 room school.

re: The Cameroon Pet Scam

I see the temptation, but when you wrestle with a pig, you both end up dirty. I've never replied, so I don't know what they'd offer, but I'm sure no actual money would end up changing hands.

re: The Cameroon Pet Scam

Reply to @david: How much are they offering to pay you to advertise? Perhaps you should take them up on the offer to give them a taste of their own medicine? Ha!

Incorrect Elevation

YMBT is actually 1100' AMSL. Refer ERSA, plus I've landed there.

More trailers, less helicopters...

So, in an attempt to increase my standing on the top contributors page, I have been looking at heliports and centering the "H" on the Google Map satellite picture. This one I had to zoom in really close to find the helipad. Guess they had more trailers than helicopters when the shot was taken.

A Brief History...

Approximate position of the former BCATP Bombing and Gunnery School, which was originally an emergency landing strip for American Airlines for flights traveling between Buffalo and Detroit on the New York to Chicago route. The school was disbanded on February 17th, 1945, the runways were used as a racetrack from 1955 until 1970 and the location hosted the International Plowing Match in 1971. In 1974, Texaco Canada purchased the property and built an oil refinery that was sold to Imperial Oil in 1989. The complete history can be found in the book, Sights on Jarvis by Robert Schweyer, printed by Heronwood Enterprises.

Friendly, efficient service

The staff at Swan Aeromotive on two recent flights to CYQU were great. They are open early, have airside access for local passengers and have a nice lounge for waiting around in. They also listen in on the MF and are waiting to guide you to parking upon your arrival at the apron; very efficient. Overall great service. Contact number for Swan is (780) 532-3607.

Grass strip

Jepp data reports airport is public while signage and local manager report private. Might as well stay at Invermere as the Radium manager wants big city tie down prices. Very rough on North end.

Friendly folks at the FBO, but small airport with barely adequate space for visiting aircraft.

re: No good!

Reply to @viennatech: According to this article, it's still operational, and has an informal fly-in every weekend, as well as occasional air-ambulance traffic:

http://www.ottawacitizen.com/Herb+Travel+Plaza+halfway+home/3402461/story.html

The paved runway is closed, but there's a grass strip operating (I think it may be just to the right in the satellite photo).

re: Pagerungan Island Airfield -

I'm pretty confident that Torohhiga is a duplicate -- I've merged it in.

The runway data appears under the "Pilot Info" tab.

Picture of

Pagerungan Island Airfield -

Am told by credible source that the field length/width is 915m x 30m. Not sure what this "Torohhiga" airport is though !

re: Will Borongan Fly Again?

i hope God willing, borongan airport will be operational again. and this will be for a long haul. for all ESTEHANONS, let's hope and pray and do what we can to make this possible. maybe we have to put politics aside first and be united to make borongan airport operational. as one airline company said in their ads," bakit sasakay ka pa sa bus, mag airbus ka na"

Bergerac was 'fogged in', this was our alternate. Big field but very quite. Twr spoke English and was very helpful. Landing fee less than 4 Euros. Friendly aero club made a coffee for us!

Summer 2010 visit

Rented acft from Sue Virr from the Aero club de Limoges. http://www.nearlyheaven.com/.

Friendly field, very helpful tower, only the odd delay to account for inbound IFR traffic (Ryanair etc) otherwise a great base for touring.

Summer 2010 visit

Small field on UNICOM 123.50 so French calls here the norm (although we made ours in English). Landing fees are a 'donation' into the piggy bank in the flying club reception. Great little restaurant round the corner (20m) L'Escale Guillaumet.

Summer 2010 visit

Great location, easy nav and comms, arrived from the North (Limoges) and bought in via the published VRPs.

Landing fees less than 4 Euros!! I'm moving to France. Easy access to the apron via the Aeroclub de Bergerac so no faffing with security etc. Good cafe/restaurant, coffee good.

On August 3, 2010 the city barricaded the runway and had a NOTAM issued. More details in this article from the Edmonton Journal: http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sports/Edmonton+City+Centre+Airport+closes+runway/3354012/story.html

Good place to visit

I flew in to PEI for four nights. As advertised, parking was free, with cables to tie down. The school is open 8-8, but they can provide a code to give you after-hours airside access. Fuel was not self-serve, and the instructors are often up flying with students, so fill up when you land if there's someone there -- it's not really an FBO (though the staff are friendly), but just a flying school that sells gas and gives away free parking. There was no multiweight oil available (just mineral oil -- apparently, that's all the school uses in its planes).

For Americans, note that this is a Mandatory Frequency (MF) airport, something that doesn't exist in the US. There's an FSS rather than a tower on the field, but you're still required to talk to it (though it doesn't issue clearances like a tower would).

re: Airlines

The Wikipedia article and FlightAware both say that Houlton currently has no scheduled airline service. I passed directly over Houlton on my flight from Ottawa to Charlottetown on Tuesday, and back again this morning, and didn't hear any airline flights inbound or outbound on Boston Centre's frequency.

It's a beautiful part of the US, by the way, especially with Mt. Katahdin a bit to the west.

re: Oh finally i received my chihuahua puppy transported by

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY A SCAM -- THERE IS NO PUPPY! DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY. THIS IS A WELL-KNOWN PET SCAM OUT OF CAMEROON AFRICA. ALL OFFERS OF PETS FROM CAMEROON AFRICA ARE SCAMS, WITHOUT EXCEPTIONS. Google "CAMEROON AFRICA PET SCAM'' and do your research on this PET SCAM before you send your money to Africa for a puppy that doesn't exist!

re: Oh finally i received my chihuahua puppy transported by

Seaplane base and airport

Good seaplane base and adjacent gravel airport, wide and smooth and well maintained. Dash-8s land here to transport hunters. Avgas and Jet-A pumps available at the dock and at the strip. Fuel price is reasonable since it can be delivered by road (this is about as far as the road goes!). The dock has room for five or six seaplanes. Buzz the adjacent outfitter buildings so that they know you're arriving (the buildings are about a mile away).

Refueling stop 1957

I seem to remember a beached or sunken Japanese ship partially sticking out of the water just off runway 10 when I landed there. It seems like we just stayed long enough to get fuel and then fly on to Japan. I was young lad then so it is hard to remember. Has anyone else seen it?
