re: Hawke Field

Reply to @david: I think it is just closed to the public. The owner has a very nice collection of airplanes including a couple of Harvards, a Waco bi-plane and others that he keeps there.

Vietnam-War era reliever

The US built this strip as a reliever for Nha Trang Air Base (VVNT) during the Vietnam War. In the satellite photo, it appears abandoned.

Picture of david

History

This was built as a US air base during the Vietnam war, and was captured by North Vietnam in 1975. The airport received major reconstruction during the early 2000s, and starting in 2004, it took over scheduled civilian air traffic for Nha Trang from VVNT.

Picture of david

Vietnam War

This was originally a French colonial air base built in 1949, and it served as a major US and South Vietnamese air base during the Vietnam War, until its capture in 1975. Until 2004, the base handled civilian traffic for Nha Trang as well, but that now goes through VVCR.

re: Name During WW2?

According to the Japanese-language Wikipedia article, this base was opened in 1942 for the Empire of Japan's Naval Air Corps, seized by US forces in 1945, and handed back over to the Japanese military in 1954 (where it later became the home of the JADF's "Blue Impulse" aerobatic team). There is no mention of what name the US might have used for the base during the occupation.

El Monte Airport working on a Taxiway?

It seems like El Monte Airport is working on a the taxiway right now. The flight school called Universal Air Academy had many airplanes coming in and out of row 21. I saw N38700 flying too. I didn't fly it so I don't know how it performs but the paint job was still in fairly good condition. Yeah, they do have a "bunch" of Cessnas.

My first too.

I discovered Trinca in the winter of 1961. I was a senior at Netcong HS with a hankering to fly. I drove up to Trinca one day, didn't see anybody until I located the office. Pete was in there with another guy and I asked about flying lessons and how much they cost. Pete told me they were $12 an hour. At the time I could not afford the price of a full hour so Pete offered to give me half-hour lessons. Then he asked if I had ever been up in a plane and I said no. Then Pete said to the other guy there that a guy should not start taking lessons if he had not been up. Then he said he had to take one of the planes up for some exercise and did I want to go along with him. So, he took me up for the better part of a half-hour. The following weekend I started my half-hour lessons. Usually, at the conclusion of the lesson Pete would take over and we would go for a ride hedge hoping all over the surounding countryside. Boy, sure could he fly that J3.

There was a lady who kept a 172 at the field, here name was/is Roxanne Perona. Toward the end of my instructions Pete told me I should check out in the 172 because it was more appropriate for carrying passengers. It was a VERY windy day and my landings were rough to say the least. So Pete took it around with the intention of showing me how to do it. Well, he had as much trouble bringing it in smoothly as I did and after we were on the ground he taxied over to the office where Rozanne was standing. When he came out of the office he heard Rozanne say, "He isn't going to send you up by yourself is he?" and I told her that he had not said anything to me about going up by myself. Well, he must have heard what Roxanne said and as he was walking toward the plane he surprised Roxanne and I by saying to me, "Why don't you take it around the pattern by yourself a few times." Then he turned around and started heading back to the office and as he did he said to Roxanne, "You have to know when to get out of the airplane, Roxanne."

Pete was a hell of a pilot and a hell of a man. I had heard that he died sometime back - not sure when. I would love to go back up to Trinca and spend some time with him. I guess I should have gone sooner. Let me extend my best wishes to all of you who are "graduates" of Trica. It was a great place to fly. - Mel Ponton, Bloomsbury, NJ

Yorkie Scam!!!!!!!!

I inquired about a Yorkie in Watkinsville, GA on Petfinder.com AngelicaJoli@live.com responded saying the family was doing research in Cameroon and had no time for the puppy that is 13wks and named Tina. She said I could have her all I had to pay was $110 to have her shipped, I responded I would not pay up front so I split the cost with her I wired (Western Union) $55 to her fiance Junior Ekane (she would be busy and couldn't pick up the money). All went well until the next day I got an email from the airport stating I had to pay $232 for insurance for Tina and I would get a refund of $200 from the company when she was delivered. I was very suspicious so I did research and found this site!!!!! Thank God I am only out $55. Just remember if it is too good to be true then it probably is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

USA Army Air Corps World War II

Dear Staff,

Do you have any information regarding the role of the Island of Tongareva during World War II? My Father was stationed there in 1942 or 43 to 1944. He helped to build a radar tower as part of his assigned duties. Thanks for any information you can provide.

Sincerely,

Vi Erickson

re: PUPPY SCAMS

Yes, I also have been talking to someone named "Betiila" from Cameroon in Africa. Supposed "missionaries" that don't have time for the puppies. They are giving away 2 English Bulldogs MIMI and DIDI. I asked thm for specific information about where in the USA they purchased the dogs as well as their pedegree information. They were vague and said that their mother left them to them on her deathbed. What a load of crap. No one gives away a 2500.00 puppy, I don't care who you are. All they want is you to pay the shipping costs. This is a scam. If it sounds to good to be true it probably is. Also I have posted the web link to where they are advertising this.

airport survey...

people i heard that there was a survey made for starting Gaya-Delhi flight, but survey team sitting at patna only cancelled the idea, giving the reason of less revenue from the airport ..isn't it kiddish ..first let the things be known to people. automatically they will start using those services ....most of the time they cancel the flight without any reasons and also no information is given to fliers and they suffer a lot. already i have sufferred this twice..also there is no availablity of snacks or coffee/tea shops at the airport.so first improve the service and then revenue can be build easily...
