Helicopter tours

The airport currently seems to be a base for helicopter tours:

re: Avgas in drums

Reply to @philippe: I've been toying with the idea of flying up north some year, though not as far as Iqaluit. Are the drums 55 US gallons? That would be a bit of a pain in my Warrior, with a 48 US gallon usable fuel capacity.

re: ICAO code conflict

Yes, it was mistake, this airport has no English ICAO.

Picture of david

re: Closed?

The pavement looks rough but intact, and although the markings have worn off, nothing's been built on or close to the runway. Is there any way to confirm the airport's status?

Picture of david

Destroyed by volcano

This airport was mostly buried in a volcanic eruption in 1997 (if you zoom in, you can still see parts of the runway). Montserrat was without an airport until 2005, when TRPG opened.

Picture of

ICAO code conflict

Unless this code exist in official ICAO database I think it should be changed to URRA. The Russian code is Π£Π Π Π―, which would translate to URRYA.

Reason for this is that Zavetnoe about 100 miles SE has Π£Π Π Π« which translates directly to URRY.

A field with lots of character

This is a former RAF base from world war II which is the only one still using the original buildings. The FBO, Far North Aviation, is in the original tower. You feel very much into "Battle of Britain" here. Great service, very friendly, no hassles with the paperwork. A very nice place to land after or before crossing the pond. The approach is a LOC DME and the weather can be low, but even though it's called the Highlands there is nothing solid to hit near the airport. The local scotch (Old Pulteney) is excellent, as is the beer (the Real Mackay).

Picture of philippe

Right downtown!

This airport is much more convenient than BIKF for GA. It's right in the middle of town. If you stay at the Loftleidir hotel, 10 meters from the FBO, you can see your aircraft from your window, although we stayed at the Hotel Holt in the center, which is very nice.

Handling and fuel is expensive, but not unreasonable.

Picture of philippe

Expensive but efficient

Handling here is quick and friendly, if a bit expensive. But then again where else are you going to go in the area!

Picture of philippe

Avgas in drums

Avgas here is sold in drums at CAD$449 each (reasonable seeing that it must be shipped by sea in summer only!). You can only buy full drums, so plan to arrive with enough room in the tanks.

Picture of philippe

Reasonable fuel

The fuel was much less expensive than I expected this far north, about the same as in Toronto.

re: Closed?

I don't know enough about drag racing to know what to look for in the satellite pic. Certainly, I don't see proper runway markings.

Picture of

Closed?

Based on Google Earth image this airport appear to be used for drag racing now.

there is nothing there

Great place for lunch

It's a very nice airport that you can approach a lower than usual altitude on final and get a good short-field landing. Park and walk up the road to a couple of places for lunch. The place across the street is excellent. This place is my favorite destination.

Picture of Aristotle

Andover

It has a nice park attached to it. Bring food and drinks (nothing to buy there) and enjoy the view of the lake and the little Piper Cubs landing on the grass runway. It's a great place to practice short field landings. There is water on both ends, so you can come rather low and cross the threshold lower that usual. All times I have been there, I never used more than half the runway for a complete stop.

Hey....Wickenheiser Airport...love it!

Wickenheiser Airport..Tell me more about your Airport..and how it came to be.. drop me a note.

Todd Wickenheiser, Golden B.C. Canada.

Picture of robert

Excellent small airfield

Has at east 330 flyable days in the year.

The "only" reason the airfield may be closed is for strong NE gusting wind Bora.

Use low and powered approach path to Rwy 13 in this case; abort landing soon and divert to the right ASAP in such case (rotor at the and of Rwy13).

Take-off on Rwy31 even if the wind comes a bit tail; there are strong rotors at the end of Rwy13 creating gusting downwash and a lot of turbulence.

Don't miss CHAA

Tillsonburg is the home of the Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association, which has a fleet of seven Harvards, a Yale and a Tiger Moth. Definitely worth checking out their aircraft and hangers the next time you're in town.

re: re: Wrong spell it is Nashik not Nasik

Reply to @dide: Thanks. Do you happen to have latitude/longitude information for the two other airports?

Picture of david

re: IΒ΄m not sure

Reply to @ptomblin: OK, I've moved the airport to that location -- it looks reasonable. Haven't changed the runway yet.

Picture of david

re: Right name

Reply to @choppergb: thanks. I've moved "HAT" to the local identifier field (so that it appears at the top of the right sidebar, and will show up in searches, etc.), translated the name back into English, and put the Spanish name in the keywords field (it shows up at the bottom of the right sidebar). I'll do the same for the other heliports.

re: IΒ΄m not sure

Reply to @choppergb: You're right, there is definitely a more obvious airport at that location, and it is closer to Yapeyu city.

Picture of choppergb

IΒ΄m not sure

IΒ΄m not sure, but for Yapeyu web pages the aeroclub is close to Yapeyu city ( 29Β°26'38.96"S 56Β°49'24.90" W) .

The MADHEL (book the airport and heliport Argentina) say rwy 04/22 but that runway isnΒ΄t 04/22 may be 16/34.
