State Campground beside this airport, but no facilities

State campground on both sides and a road passes close by. Not as quiet as it looks; you can camp on the field but there are walking trails crisscrossing the runway between the campgrounds and a steady stream of mountain bikers cross the runway. Despite being a state campground, there are no facilities, no restaurants, no stores close by.

When I was there in Aug 2009, there was a Forest Service firefighting team with two helicopters and a fuel truck operating from the airstrip. Approach from the South, along the lake. Runway rises to the North, then ends abruptly. There was a Warrior in the overrun with wiped landing gear, he floated and touched down late, ground-looping just before the steep drop-off at the North end.

SkyTrain Service

As of August 17 2009, SkyTrain service now connects YVR with downtown Vancouver. Yay!

Inexpensive Fuel, basic facilities

Refueled here at the municipal self-serve pump (West end of the ramp). There are pumps at the FBO on the East end of the ramp but their avgas was much more expensive. Aug 2009.

Although it does not look like there are any other facilities, there is a curious blue Quonsot-style structure outside the fence that is actually the airport manager's office. There is a toilet, phone and internet in his building. He also has wifi that you can access.

re: cameroon scam! 3 english bulldog pups

the same thing happened to me except the bulldog puppy was free and i would only have to pay 110 for the shipping and 40 for the food. they messed up a bit though... they provided pictures at the bottom of their email that let me know how the puppy would be delievered... unfortunatly for them, the pictures had a website located on the dogs' coats they were being delievered in, the affiliation with the airline was non existent. it didnt take me long to figure out that it was a scam. who claims that they own a business and it actually exists without having a website for it and providing fake pictures and not to mention they called me like 12 times one right after the other. come on some people are just ridiculously stupid.

re: Closed?

Several signs...Look close and you'll see markings on the asphalt on the west side near the yellow boxes. There is a fence/wall covering most of the old runway. And it appears they have made a go cart track on the old apron.

Subic Bay International Airport

I hope they will allow international commercial flights in SBIA. After the FEDEX departure just wondering what does SBMA plan to do with the airport. Hoping commercial flights to liven up the area and to attract tourism.

re: re: Avgas in drums

Reply to @david: I read a couple of books by a Minnesota dentist who liked to take his Super Cub for trips around the Canadian North - it sounded like he often had to arrange for drums at places he was planning to stop, and he'd take the excess on board as baggage. Then he'd fly for a while, find a likely lake to drop into (he was on straight floats) and then transfer the fuel from the bags in the baggage compartment to the fuel tanks.

Picture of david

re: Avgas in drums

Thanks. It sounds like the Quebec side of James Bay and Hudson Bay is a better bet than the Ontario/Manitoba/NWT side -- I can't find any avgas between Moosonee and Churchill, except for maybe buying drums.

Picture of

re: Avgas in drums

Reply to @david: drums are 205 litres/45 CDN gallons/54 US gallons.

re: Closed

I couldn't find the article in the English Wikipedia -- is it in the Russian one?

re: Closed

Thanks for the info. If anyone finds out the status, please let us know.

Picture of

re: Closed

Reply to @david: Was supposed to be a question mark after Closed in title. Don't know if it is completely closed, but it is no longer used for any mil- or private regular flights.

Picture of david

re: Closed

Is the runway ever used (say, to fly in new aircraft for display), or is it completely shut down?

Picture of

Closed

According to Wikipedia article about Chaykovsky there is no longer an airport there.

I was in the Marine Corps and Stopped at Wake for refueling. As out of the way it is, it is one of the most beautiful places i got to visit while stationed on Okinawa. I would love to visit it again one day.

Helicopter tours

The airport currently seems to be a base for helicopter tours:

re: Avgas in drums

Reply to @philippe: I've been toying with the idea of flying up north some year, though not as far as Iqaluit. Are the drums 55 US gallons? That would be a bit of a pain in my Warrior, with a 48 US gallon usable fuel capacity.

re: ICAO code conflict

Yes, it was mistake, this airport has no English ICAO.

Picture of david

re: Closed?

The pavement looks rough but intact, and although the markings have worn off, nothing's been built on or close to the runway. Is there any way to confirm the airport's status?

Picture of david

Destroyed by volcano

This airport was mostly buried in a volcanic eruption in 1997 (if you zoom in, you can still see parts of the runway). Montserrat was without an airport until 2005, when TRPG opened.

Picture of

ICAO code conflict

Unless this code exist in official ICAO database I think it should be changed to URRA. The Russian code is Π£Π Π Π―, which would translate to URRYA.

Reason for this is that Zavetnoe about 100 miles SE has Π£Π Π Π« which translates directly to URRY.

A field with lots of character

This is a former RAF base from world war II which is the only one still using the original buildings. The FBO, Far North Aviation, is in the original tower. You feel very much into "Battle of Britain" here. Great service, very friendly, no hassles with the paperwork. A very nice place to land after or before crossing the pond. The approach is a LOC DME and the weather can be low, but even though it's called the Highlands there is nothing solid to hit near the airport. The local scotch (Old Pulteney) is excellent, as is the beer (the Real Mackay).

Picture of philippe

Right downtown!

This airport is much more convenient than BIKF for GA. It's right in the middle of town. If you stay at the Loftleidir hotel, 10 meters from the FBO, you can see your aircraft from your window, although we stayed at the Hotel Holt in the center, which is very nice.

Handling and fuel is expensive, but not unreasonable.

Picture of philippe

Expensive but efficient

Handling here is quick and friendly, if a bit expensive. But then again where else are you going to go in the area!

Picture of philippe

Avgas in drums

Avgas here is sold in drums at CAD$449 each (reasonable seeing that it must be shipped by sea in summer only!). You can only buy full drums, so plan to arrive with enough room in the tanks.

Picture of philippe

Reasonable fuel

The fuel was much less expensive than I expected this far north, about the same as in Toronto.

re: Closed?

I don't know enough about drag racing to know what to look for in the satellite pic. Certainly, I don't see proper runway markings.

re: Pork ????

It's really just getting started finally, the brand new terminal building just opened, and they got the AWOS installed as well. It has been there for a few years though.
