re: Neato!
Reply to @bcrosby: I haven't tried Herb's yet (not sure about permissions and runway length), but it seems that there are now two easy fast-food stops in the area -- this service centre, with its own runway, and Les Cèdres Airport (CSS3 -- "Cedars" to anglophone pilots) a bit to the south, which has a truck stop right across the highway from the airport last I was there.
Beja Airport
I can't wait for Beja airport to open - we have friends in Ferreira Do Alentejo so it will save them having to drive the almost 2 hr journey to collect us from Lisbon or Faro.
Neato!
Wow.. that's pretty cool. Handy if your airplane uses mogas ;)
Lilongwe Airport
A small international airport. Access by tarred road from central lilongwe 25km or 40 minutes. Good, secure cheap car parking. Check in area never more than 3 of the dozen or so desks manned. No obvious queing system. Resteraunt and bar upstairs are reasonable. Depature gate has worn chairs and bar is occasionally staffed, busses to the planes in urgent need of replacement. No more than 5 international flights a day from this ariport which seem to be handled to a reasonable standard. On arrival you are met by efficient customs staff. There is one very worn bagge belt but it is served by good manual baggage services from Plane to terminal. Bags frequently lost by airlines but excellent lost and found staff are based in the arrivals area. Lost bags arrive the following day in most cases. (About 30% of people arrive with lost bags on arrival at LLW - most on South African Airlines and Kenyan Airlines due to the 'JNB vanishing effect' and the short transfer time from European flights at NBO) Taxi operatives clog up the narrow arrivals area, cost is between $20 to $30 into town. No public transort whatsoever to or from this airport. Basically an airport in decay, however this is a very good airport for the region and works well most of the time.
Private airstrip
This is a private, paved airstrip attached to a service centre (rest stop) near Vankleek Hill, Ontario, at the junction of highways 417 and 34. I found out about it reading comments on the web, and verified its location (and some parked planes) using Google satellite view.
SJU Latin American Airport
And it needs more Latin American airline service.
Away from it all!!!
Just flew in: Great retreat with access to the beach and safe swimming!
Update NOTAM
Is NOTAM about re-open RWY 05/23 after aircraft block on RWY released?
The (only) Airport in Western Greece during winter
Corfu (Kerkyra) is one of the few Greek airports with normal working hours during the winter (see http://www.ypa.gr/content/index.asp?tid=247&lang=2 - some airports are open only on some days, some are open for only an hour in the evening, etc).
The arrival and stay in Corfu was pleasant. I assume that during the high season the airport may be quite busy.
An important advice: have the AOPA membership card or some proof that you are a flying-club member with you. With proof of club membership, the landing fee is symbolic (some 4 EUR) and you get a hefty discount on handling (some 15-20 EUR). It is rumored that Greeks are trying hard to invite GA guests to their nice places and these discounts are part of this campaign. We can only applaud this attitude and wish other countries would do the same.
Altogether the experience was very nice, although the Greek way (everything can be solved, sometimes a bit slow). ARO is the tower: they were very friendly and helpful in planning and arranging the flight through Greek airspace.
For a 100$ hamburger type of stay (in reality it is a 600 EUR Greek dinner), there is quite a decent Hotel Bretagne 5 minutes walk from the airport and another 15 minutes walk from the city centre.
Nice but expensive
The airport itself is very nice (I was told it was recently rebuilt by a German company and they hold a concession for twenty years to operate it).
All the staff was very friendly. It took the gasoline truck an hour to come to us (yes, they have AvGas 100LL), the ARO was friendly, but a bit clumsy. The main objection is the price: 95 EUR for 600kg MTOW, no PAX.
A prior landing permission is needed. In principle it takes 24h to get it (we got it overnight). Contact is Mr. Vrioni (mobile) +355 682 151 493, (fixed) +355 42 343 487.
African Grey
I contacted this person about an African Grey Parrot and they also came off as a good Christian person. I contacted them about a bird that was supposedly close by so I could pick it up. That is when I was told that they were on missionary work in Cameroon and that they no longer have time for the birds. At once, this seemed fishy to me. If you advertise a bird in one place, why are you located in another? Not to mention, without even telling them where I was located, they told me how long the flight would take. I went ahead and gave false information to follow through and make sure that this was the same scum bags I read about here, and sure enough, I recieved an email back asking for all of my personal information, every sentence ended in ok, so at once, I knew it was the same scamming idiots. I then wrote them back telling them how sad and pathetic they were for scamming innocent, unsuspecting people, who were kind and trusting. It is really sad when people like this float by screwing people out of their hard earned money. I found the birds on birdsnow.com. Watch out for these as well.
Demolition of war-time hangars
This site has been designated a Heritage site back in the 90's however, the DND still wants to demolish the hangars and other structures on the airport. More at the Globe and Mail:
