Hello anyone that worked for Rose from '73 to '77. My name is John Dickson and I, like othersm stumbled across this looking for info on Rex Rose for a good friend. I owe my entire airline career to advancements and good fortune I was able to enjoy working for Jean Rose and her Chief Pilot at the time, Art Olsen. If it wasn't for them and their trust in the young 20 year old I was at the time, I'm not sure where I would be. I don't know enough about how the categories are defined to feel confident changing it myself but if an airport like KCMA (Wikipedia: Camarillo_Airport) is considered "large" it seems almost absurd to not consider this one large as well
Conejo Valley Airport, also known as Janss Airport,[1] was an airport in Thousand Oaks, California. It had a 2,600 foot runway and was located adjacent to Thousand Oaks Boulevard. The airport opened in 1926, but was relocated in the early 1960s. The new airport, known as Rancho Conejo Airport, was established on the north side of State Highway 101. Various movies were filmed at Conejo Valley Airport, including The Paleface (1948), Riders of the Whistling Pines (1949),[2] and Overland Stage Raiders (1938).[3] Rancho Conejo Airport appeared in the film It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963).[4][5]
Built in 1940 as a training field, this was adjacent to the Japanese-American internment camp (whose remains are still visible on the map to the southwest across US-395). The airfield remained open until 1956, and in intermittent use until at least 1975.
Ignore the spammer. This is very much a private airport, and this is a gentle reminder that inclusion on this website does not imply that any facility is open to public access or safe for landing. Please check with local authorities or the property owner (if applicable) before attempting to land anywhere that is not a known public airport.
Hello, I came across this website today trying to find out what happened to Rose Aviation at Hawthorne Airport and saw your post. My name is Linda Silvertooth, I am the Linda you mentioned in your post. I worked at Rose from 1977-1981 and have kept in touch with several other friends from those days (Kathy Hesse, Kevin Clover). I knew Jean as the former owner and and as an FAA Pilot Examiner, Art was the owner at the time I was there. Jean passed away in the early 80’s and Art passed away in 2018. I know Claude is gone also but I don’t remember when he passed. I took several check rides from both Jean and Claude…..great people!! I saw Don Pedersen in 2013 at a Rose reunion, he was the Chief of Police for Culver City at that time, but I think he has retired. Were you at Rose Aviation during those years? I went on to work for the FAA for over 35 years and retired in 2020. It was a great time during those days at Rose! Linda
I've given this a provisional name based on the location, but I've come up with the same problem as @im -- not mapped, no data available. More research needed.
I have been to the San Diego airport several times to drop my mom it is a very crowded airport but still the management here works very fast we didn't have to stand in line for a long time.
Very bumpy surface, I’d say its “iffy” for a Cirrus with wheel pants. Incredible spot, short walk to wonderful beach, tie downs and picnic tables on site. Need to sign a waiver and agreement with the operator before landing.
My instructor pointed out this field a while ago, and every time I fly above it - it does look like an airport. I tried simulated engine failure to approach in this airfield but it's pretty steep on one end and very close to Livermore on the other. Not sure if this is a private field or maybe it never went into operation. Could not find any information about it either
Per http://www.aerofiles.com/airports-CA.html, "[approx: 37-43-22N, 119-38-09W] (19??-19??) 1927 = W of Yosemite Village; "approximately 1300' square grass field, very dangerous." 1928 = (L) (Standard Oil ad, WnFly 1/28). 19?? = (R) Closed to flying activity." The listed coordinates place this at El Capitan Meadow! This does not appear to be listed on Freeman's Abandoned Airports site.
Sometimes, the FAA coordinates are just plain wrong. I found this airstrip using Topo Maps and the address of the owner. It's closed now, but you can at least see where the airstrip was cleared out in past years.

Ideas With the airport:

When the place is not used, Help develop the runway by possibly painting it or making it wider by clearing off the grass.

I worked for Rose Aviation in 1960 to 1962 as a flight instructor. I attained all of my ratings from Jean and Rex and they were kind enough to give me a job. I went to work for Zantop in 1962 and was hired by Delta Airlines in 1963. I lost track of Jean and Rex but have been able to access Jeans past as a WASP during WWII. She was injured in a Piper Apache accident in about 1984 and later died of a blood clot as a result of her injuries. I can't find any reference of Rex. Ken Chirhart, kchirhart@ma.rr.com
