Well maintained, but complex and not esp user friendly for C

MMU has come a long way in twenty years. Today, seeing a Cessna take off is an odd event...usually preceeded by five or six Citations, a Lear, and a few helicopters. Don't let this deter you, the ATC staff are very friendly and helpful and the airport is very convienent.

Crosswind training a must

Wind is almost never down the runway, but with 6000ft of asphalt you have plenty of time to plant the wheels. Not much up here, but super easy to find. Just look for the area of forest that looks like its been hit my a nuclear bomb. Careful, ILS is installed and jetsetters sometimes don't announce. Nothing like a Citation screaming in as you turn final...

Quiet, simple, and easy to find

Woodbine is a nice airport if you'd like cheap fuel and need an airport closer to the northern end of cape may county. Parking is 5 dollars overnight on the grass. Runways are in decent shape, just watch out for banner towing in the summer...they are crazy crazy people.

Soft, short, and rough

Certainly not the most well maintained grass strip in NJ, but very accessible for training. Approaches from the south very tough with huge pine trees on the approach end. Runway undulates badly, so don't feel bad if you float every 3 seconds while bouncing down the turf. Easy to find though...grass very worn.

Impressive...and quite short

Like the other comment, make sure you can stop a plane in less than 1500 ft. The water on both ends will stop your plane for you if you can not... Beautiful airport, esp in the fall. Don't pass this stop up

GO HERE, you'll regret it if you pass it by

Ok, if you're rusty on your short-field, crosswind, uphill landing techniques...take a long a flight instructor. But perched atop a taxiway about 500 ft from the runway is the best cafe/restaurant in the NY Metro area. Airport can be hard to find amongst the farms and hills, but overall is a great place for food. Cafe is open Thurs-Sun 7am-3:30pm. Don't sound like an idiot on the radio....when the cafe is open they broadcast the unicom in there!

Work and fly from here

CDW is indeed tough to spot especially when MMU is only 5 miles away and practically visible from space. The AFD also gives you a super long list of rules and noise abatement procedures that often scare new pilots away. Just ignore them. The airport is surrounded by industrial parks and a golf course. And who cares about golfers right? Runway 9/27 recently renamed 10/28. Lighting at night could be stronger...and don't feel bad when a controller who sounds like a man turns out to be the scariest woman alive...other than that...GREAT AIRPORT.

Nice, but not much there

Newton is a nice little strip, well maintained...and frankly, boring as all heck. You'll miss this spot if you don't look down as it's nestled in thick trees. Also, don't go off the northern approach end...there's a nice lake to cushion any further taxiing you intend to do. Other than that, great spot to practice or take a break from a long trip. No lights, and no fuel.

Touch and Go

Just did a touch and go on a x-country from Buttonville. After reading these comments I wish I stayed and checked out the terminal. Maybe next time.

Sunday afternoon, was pretty busy. 3 or 4 people doing their thing in the circuit.

As of Friday 1 November 2007, 100LL fuel at Pepco (Esso) was CAD 1.344/liter + tax. There is a callout charge between 5pm and 8am, but no extra charges during the day.

Barrow

This is one of the most interesting places. Definitely worth the trip from Fairbanks to Barrow on a 737 Combi - the cargo and the passengers are together! A ceremonious crossing of the arctic circle by the pilot as well as a certificate from Alaska Airlines when you land!

Chiriaco Summit

A simple paved strip adjacent to I-10 just east of Palm Springs. We met a few other Cherokee drivers there for a burger. Decent little cafe, good burger/shake.

My first longer XC after getting my PPL, and the first XC with my wife.

We took our club's Dakota here to get painted. They did an excellent job, and the plane looks beautiful now.

Oshkosh 2003

Refueled here on the way to Oshkosh. They had free hotdogs, which I think is why my fellow club members chose it.

Ended up here when weathered out by a huge line of thunderstorms on a flight home from Oshkosh. Had dinner in a Hooters that was an easy walk (for somebody who just spent a week walking around Oshkosh) from the airport. Ate dinner with two Canadians who arrived VFR in a Grumman Tiger.

Supply / demand

I'm not defending the costs of landing a 747... yes it's outrageous. But, having been into Pearson in a light plane once, I would say that the landing fee is fair - especially outside of peak hours ($75). I'm sure the landing fee is set to keep us little guys from joyriding in the area and becoming a hazard to the more serious traffic which is lined up on approach. Certainly the $75 (or $200) is not a money making proposition.

I do agree, though, that there are a lot of better alternatives nearby. CYTZ in an awesome little airport. Approaching the city over the water, with the skyline just of your shoulder is really amazing.

re: IFR

I came into Rockcliffe a few weeks ago with a 1,000 ft AGL ceiling and good vis underneath (daylight), and it was no problem transitioning from the Gatineau VOR/DME 09 to a visual landing at Rockcliffe.

re: Flyboys Cafe

We flew in for Flyboys Oktoberfest last Saturday (October 13th). It was great. They had their local bratwurst, german potato salad, pickled beets, and to top it off, they had Black Forrest cake. It was one great meal, and along with that, they had some great beers, that you normally wouldnt' find in the chain restaurants. They were quite busy, as it was guard drill weekend, but the staff kept up with the crowd. I must add, I had a couple of conversations with some of the Air National guard men and women, and let me tell you, it makes us sleep better at night to know how proud these men and women are of their unit, and their country. So, stop in, and show your apprciation to the men and women in uniform, and buy them a beer, and say thanks. We did and will do it again!

No food

There is no food available at Baie-Comeau except for some junk-food vending machines and a coffee machine. There is a room that used to be a cafeteria -- it still has tables and a microwave -- but there's nothing served there any more. Staff told me that the nearest food is in town, about 18 km away (I think).

Fees

Baie-Comeau has both a landing fee and a terminal fee. The security guard collects it, before she or he lets you back onto the field through the locked door. I think that they're around $15 each, but they were waived for my Hope Air flight. You pay for gas from the FBO inside the terminal near the checkin desks, so you can't just stay outside to avoid the fees.

Using the mandatory frequency

Baie-Comeau is a mandatory-frequency airport, with a remote transmitter run by Mont-Joli; however, unlike other MF fields, Mont-Joli does *not* want you to make any traffic calls on the MF (they chastized me over the radio when I announced that I was taking the runway for departure) except what they ask for.

It is very difficult to work with the Alaska Airlines customer service counter within the secured area. It's understaffed, usually with uninterested employees.

This airport has a nursery on the B concourse. It's a great little private room with two leather couches, a coffee table, a crib (bring your own sheet/blanket), rollercoaster beads, toddler-size chairs, and its own private bathroom. The only downfall is it doesn't have a monitor for arrivals/departures. Oh, and the room kind of stinks.

Departures are routinely delayed. Most aggravating.

fall 2007

this airport is currently undergoing a major remodel. perhaps with more gates, we'll have the opportunity for more flights at more convenient departure times.

TSA security is very thorough, but consistently very lenient in what you're allowed to bring. for instance, they allowed me to bring about 8 oz. of juice for my baby in her cup and plenty of other baby food/drink supplies.

Time to get through security is really fast and easy.

MALLAM AMINU KANO INTL. AIRPORT

This intl. airport operating in in the commercial city of Kano, Nigeria is a small international airport with few flights flying internationally like KLM, Middle East, Egypt airlines etc. Not known for the infrastructure.

Yes, I don't see anything in the satellite photo either. According to the FAA database, there's supposed to be a private 1,400 foot turf runway there (not listed in the AFD). Does anyone have more information?

Nice place to go

the picture here shows the airport in 2005 just after the runway had been prolonged. the circular open space at RWY23 is where now stands a VOR emitter. The airport handles several intl flights from/to Italy, France, La RΓ©union & Mauritius. There are of course domestic flights performed by Air Madagascar, the local, and only, and national, airline. Nosy Be is indeed a nice place to visit

re: Flyboys Cafe

I was agree! I was at Mansfield for a business meeting, and stopped in waiting for my plane. THe bratwurst they have is absolutely the best I have ever had. They also have a good selection of seasonal beers, which the Spiced Wheat was my favorite. I also got to see two C-130's perform an airdrop mission on the airport. I must agree with another post and say it's "pretty cool".

Southwest end of runway in poor shape

The southwest 600 feet of the runway (the first 600 of rwy 06 or the last 600 of 24) is in pretty bad shape, and has now officially been NOTAM'ed closed. The rest of the runway is a bit bumpy, but generally OK. The apron is at the northeast end.

U.S. Customs

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol is willing to meet aircraft at Maxson -- it's not officially listed as an airport of entry, but it's much closer to the Thousand Islands Bridge where the CBP officers are based than Watertown (KART), so it saves them driving.

One quirk (for both Maxson and Watertown), is that they won't accept arrival notices before the day of arrival because so many pilots don't show up, so you have to get up early to call two hours before arrival for a morning flight. They also couldn't meet me at 7:45 am because it was too close to shift change, but 8:00 am was fine.
