re: No Southwest Airlines?

We've removed the routes, because we didn't have a good way to keep them up to date.

Uninhabited island

This island in the Pacific Ocean is uninhabited (except by occasional expeditions or cast-aways), and is a direct possession of France rather than part of one of its overseas territories. It does not belong to any Region or Department.

Cool that the electrical lines are buried where they cross the strip but you'll probably break your landing gear if you try to land here, it's full of huge potholes.

Picture of radix

(no subject)

It's not suitable to land as it has meter high vegetation.

Picture of radix

Actually it's a grass runway and quite hard to spot if you're not familiar with it.

It was improved recently for an ultra light aircraft fly-in event but military authorisation is required to use it.

Use the grass runways

The runway pavement surface is in bad shape, except for a small strip down the middle of 08/26. Use the grass surface beside each runway, which is well maintained (it was no problem for my nose-dragging PA-28).

Note: Bing Maps imagery shows a much more serviceable strip than Google Maps does. Not sure how old Bing's images are.

Conducted a prec search at this strip in 2018 and it looked unsuitable for landing due as it was overgrown

Very hard strip to spot. There are cones but that's it. If you have this for a CPL nav/test do a good recce of the satellite image before flying!

Road crossing runway

From the Wikipedia article:

"Winston Churchill Avenue (the main road heading towards the land border with Spain) intersects the airport runway, and consequently has to be closed every time a plane lands or departs."

Shared zone and frequency with Les Cèdres

This airport is only a few miles to the north of the busier Les Cèdres/Cedars (CSS3), and shares a common zone and ATF frequency of 123.5 MHz (also the frequency for Ottawa/Rockcliffe CYRO, so it gets busy).

Like Les Cèdres, it's under Montreal Terminal's class C shelf, so if you're VFR, you need to stay below 2,000 ft MSL unless you're talking to them. It's a flat area with lots of fields and no high towers, so low flight isn't a problem.

Picture of david

The runway's not as bad as it looks

The runway looks like a patchwork quilt of different shades of asphalt when you're on approach, but the surface is actually fine.

If you're VFR, note that you need to stay below 2,000 ft MSL unless you talk to Montreal Terminal (and they're often too busy to talk much, though they try to accomodate). The land is flat, there are no high towers in the area, and there are fields for emergency landing in every direction, so it's not really a problem flying around at 1,500 ft until you're out from under the class C shelf.

Health screening during the 2014-15 Ebola crisis

When I visited in 2015 during the Ebola crisis, there was fairly strict health screening in place. We had our temperatures taken before we entered the terminal building by local authorities (common at all public buildings), then again before we boarded the Air France flight, by a security team from France. On arrival at CDG, we were checked again exiting the plane, then those of us who had started our trips in Ebola-affected countries were pulled off the Paris-Montreal flight first, while all other passengers were forced to remain seated, and given a checkup by a public health nurse.

Picture of david

Mountain (sort-of)

The mountain (by eastern standards) is just behind the field, and looms large when you're crossing overhead from the south to join the downwind for 08. It's good to warn any passengers that you'll appear to be flying straight towards the trees.

Picture of david

Still open (2019)

If flew in again this spring. Yes, it's still here. The airport is a bit shabby and run-down, but you can't beat it for convenienceβ€”just a quick short distance away from the centre of the city.
